My Core Values and How I Learned Them

What are your core values? My core values consist of the following: accomplishment, benevolent, determined, gallant, helpful, merciful, opportunity, optimistic, perseverance and vigorous. Where/how did you learn these values? I had learned these core values from my family, teachers/professors, peers and myself. While I was younger to the age I am now, I was shown how important it is to have strong characteristics that make you a person. Everything I had been through I had lost and gain some of the values along the way of my life. I will admit not all of these came at once; it took much time to see the importance of my life and progress what’s left in it. Most of the time, when I was stuck I’d ask for advice and see how others got through it. I put myself in their shoes and see if I did something like them if it would help me and it did. Not always, I would put myself in someone shoes because I don’t know how they dealt with whatever came their way. How I learned these is by watching or listening to what others have to say. For example, in high school I heard how people made Honor Society and I never was part of it. It seems as if they pushed themselves to get there and did whatever they could to get involved with it. I pushed myself to get grades I would be happy with and be fine once I graduated. No, I never had A’s or B’s all the time, nonetheless I ended up gaining a scholarship for the local college I now attend. This showed me that the values I saw others have, I have them as well. It just took some time to realize I could do something too to better myself in the long run. My teachers/professors told us students to “never give up, keep going” and I remember that there were subjects I never had a strong interest in and I... ... middle of paper ... ...y areas of difference between your values and social work values affect your ability to practice social work? As I mentioned above, if I focused more on my values the client won’t no longer will see that they are important for seeking the help they deserve. But since, I know that I won’t want to alter or change the impact on them. I will establish or expand my knowledge of how the right practice can be done. Once I become aware of how to handle more of an idea counsel setting I believe that my values and the social work values will be improved. I think that since most of the values I have for myself are positive and I can combine what I have with a social work value and see if it can help the person I’m working with. Likewise, the client and me will have two different values and for instance, you still need to look after why the person and help them no matter what.
