Introduction
I would like to be a social worker for the same reason most people do: The desire to help people. I think that service to others is the most satisfying work that someone can do, and I cannot think of anything else I would rather do. I find that assisting other people makes me feel more included in my community and always leads me to having a more positive mentality. I want to be able to contribute to society as tangibly and broadly as possible. In fact, I have had a hard time narrowing down the specific field and population to focus my career on because I would like to help everyone.
My community and the social work field can benefit from me in many ways. I am an extremely optimistic person and I think that sharing my attitude

Sexism is prejudice, stereotyping, or discrimination on the basis of sex (Kirst-Ashman & Hull, 2014). Specifically, women tend to experience sexism in disproportionate numbers. It is a well-documented fact that women on average earn significantly less than their male counter-parts (Zastro & Kirst-Ashman, 2013). They are often passed over for raises and promotions because of an antiquated notion that men are the “bread winners”. Despite the fact that I will hopefully be working for a 501(c)3 somewhere, there are various supports that a workplace can utilize to help employees who may be impoverished for whatever reason. Throughout the world, discrimination in all forms has continued to be a constant struggle; whether it’s racial, gender based, religion, beliefs, appearance or anything that makes one person different from another, it’s an everyday occurrence. A major place that discrimination is occurring at is in the workplace. One of the largest problems discrimination issues is believed to be gender. Women, who have the same amount of experience as men are not getting paid at the same rate as men, these women also are equally trained and educated. According to the article Gender Pay, it was discovered in 2007 that a woman makes 81 cents for every dollar a man earns.(“Gender Pay”) . This shouldn’t be happening in today’s society for the fact the society lived in today is suppose to be more accepting. Men are viewed as being more popular, valuable and having higher powers than women. Gender discrimination in salaries, employing, or promotions persists to be a substantial aspect in the workplace, culminating into a palpably unrelenting wage gap. More women are steadily at risk of facing violence from family members, the community, and even their husbands. My interest in social work started when I realized I was the person that my family and friends would come to for support. I found that I liked to listen to others and help them get through difficult times. I have chosen social work as a profession because of my passion to help others. I want to make a difference in someone’s life and help them through the problems they are having. There are many reasons why I would love to become a social worker. However, it is sort of difficult to pinch point how or why I became attracted to this specific profession. Nevertheless, most of the particles in my body argue that it would have to stem back to experiences I have encountered growing up. I would like to begin by saying that graduating high school I was unsure where I was going or where I would end up. My mother who always had high expectations for me persuaded me to at least attempt pursing a college education. I then decided to enroll Guttman Community College @ CUNY, where I was appointed a Student Success Advocate (S.S.A). My S.S.A saw something in me that I had yet to figure out. The main reason I chose the social work profession, manifested early within my stages of childhood. The importance of giving to and caring for those in need, were deeply embedded in my very soul. Being reared by my grandmother, a nurse and by my teenage mother, a psychology student, I was exposed constantly to acts of kindness and generosity. As a result to my empathetic personality, I was welcomed into many social and ethnic groups, not commonly open to a young gay black male. My interest in social work stems from a love of volunteering that I possessed ever since I was a young child expressing great enthusiasm for church and school service events. As I grew older, I began volunteering for many other community events, such as serving over 200 hours at a local hospital, helping with free cancer screenings, and fitting children with free bike helmets. I even created my own donation drive for a local women’s and children’s shelter. I feel the best when I am striving to create positive changes in my community and for struggling, marginalized individuals. Social services have been a part of my life for a very long time, and I want it to continue to be on a professional level.
Discrimination at work is a touchy issue. Most people, if not all, have experienced some sort or form of it and they ignored it, quit, or got fired from their job. Women tend to be more emotional than men and when women are judged and discriminated they are offended by it immediately. Also, the fact of women getting a lower income than men for the same job is almost unbelievable. It is very important to be concerned on the issue because it is constantly increasing throughout the United States. It upsets me that women are paid less than men because women have the same ability and work ethic as men do, but they are looked at differently. According to AAUW, women are making 77 percent of what men make. This rate hasn’t changed since 2002 (Hill, 2013). Statistics show that women will never make as much as men due to the thought of never being comparable to men (Williams, 2013).
For many decades, women have faced inequalities in the workforce. At one point, they were not allowed to work at all. Although women's rights have improved and are now able to work alongside men, they are still treated unfairly. According to the 2012 U.S. Census, women’s earnings were “76.5 percent of men’s” (1). In 2012, men, on average, earned $47,398 and women earned only $35,791. This is when comparing employees where both gender spend the same amount of time working. Not only do women encounter unfairness in work pay, they also face a “glass ceiling” on a promotional basis. This glass ceiling is a “promotion barrier that prevents woman’s upward ability” (2). For example, if a woman is able to enter a job traditionally for men, she will still not receive the same pay or experience the same increase in occupational ability. Gender typing plays a huge role in the workplace. It is the idea that women tend to hold jobs that are low paid with low status. Women are not highly considered in leadership positions because of social construction of gender. Society has given women the role of “caretakers” and sensitive individuals. Therefore, women are not depicted as authoritative figures, which is apparent with the absence of women in leadership roles in companies. Furthermore, sex segregation leads to occupations with either the emphasis of women in a certain job or men in a certain job. In today’s society, Women perform similar jobs to men. Whether it’s blue or white collar jobs, women are always present and thriving for success balancing a life of business and family. In the job market, some are graduates of the best schools and have interned at the best firms, but are still not compensated as equally as men. Following the recent comments by the CEO of Microsoft concerning women asking for raises and how they should trust the system to install equality, the issue seems to be still present, and women’s work is not rewarded similarly to men’s.
Reflecting back on my childhood, I always had a vivid imagination. I would imagine being a doctor, lawyer, or even the first female president of the United States of America. But, I never considered a career in social work. Over the years I realized that I like helping people, but my thoughts of what I wanted to be were indifferent. In high school my counselor had me do a career survey to see what may have interest me. The most common choices were Nursing, Teaching, or becoming a Social Worker. So I went on the Internet and researched as much as I could on each career choice. Nevertheless, at that point of my life I thought that Nursing was the best career choice for me.
