The movie starts with Empress Little Wan sending messengers to inform Crown Prince Wu Luan that his father the Emperor has died, resulting in his uncle, Li taking the throne. Wan is unaware that his uncle the now Emperor Li has sent riders to assassinate him. But miraculously, Wu Luan is able to survive the onslaught and to return to the palace to stand trial. This is where he is met by his love interest Empress Wan and Qing Nu, also happens to be officially engaged to Wu Luan, this even more further complicates the situation even more than it was before. Tension are high in the imperial court and once palace official Governor Pei Hong welcomes Empress Wan as 'Empress Dowager', His family and him are immediately sent to death. While all of this is going on, the Emperor Li asks Wu Luan to practice a swordplay ceremony in anticipation for the Empress Little Wan’s coronation. Wu Luan is sparring with a Imperial Guard but out of nowhere, to the surprise of Wu Luan suddenly a Imperial Guard draws a sharpened swords in an attempt to kill Wu Luan. The ceremony is suddenly stopped by Empress Wan, who implies that the Emperor was attempting to make the attempted murder of Wu Luan look like an accident. As a result, Empress Little Wan’s coronation ceremony is canceled and rescheduled. To ease his concerns about the attempted murder, Wu Luan is accompanied by singers and dancers. He is able to expose his uncle as the murderer of his father on stage in a masked mime play. The noticeably shaken Emperor Li conjures up a plan to get rid of Wu Luan. But rather than killing Wu Luan and running the risk of Empress Wan feeling alienated. Emperor Li ends up deciding that Wu Luan should be traded as a hostage in exchange for the prince of the Khitans, a neighbouring kingdom.
