Introduction: In the web of events that shape our world, two fundamental threads stand out: the notion of events that are mutually exclusive and those that are independent. Like pieces of a puzzle in the grand structure of life, understanding these concepts unlocks the intricacies of how events interact with and influence each other. From the realms of sports to finance, from the natural world to human efforts, the concepts of mutually exclusive and independent events extend through every area of our existence, shaping outcomes and guiding decisions (Mutually exclusive events, n.d.). In the following paragraph, I will explore each of these ideas using examples from my field of interest, which is sports. In sports, two events I'd like to delve into are winning a game and losing a game. These events …show more content…
Mutually exclusive events cannot happen together because they're like opposite choices (3.2 Independent and Mutually Exclusive Events: Statistics | OpenStax, n.d.). For example, in the basketball game scenario, if one team wins, the other team automatically loses. On the other hand, independent events can happen separately without influencing each other (3.2 Independent and Mutually Exclusive Events: Statistics | OpenStax, n.d.). In the soccer and basketball scenario, Sarah's penalty kick practice and Jack's basketball game are independent events because one doesn't affect the other. Conclusion: It is easier to perceive the connections in various contexts when we can see the occurrences as separate and distinct from one another. These ideas are useful in many contexts, including sports, and they allow us to make sense of events and ourselves. While reading the articles I found a connection in the poems Contest, The Jump Shooter, Day and Night Handball. All three of these poems followed a theme about growing old and gaining more wisdom about a sport. The message of these poems is that aging doesn’t change your ability to play a sport, because even though you may not be as strong, or as fast you still have more experience. These authors portray this theme through imagery. The poem Contest creates an image of younger athletes circling around her but she is still able to keep up with them because she has experience from previous years. In the Jump Shooter Dennis Trudell split up the lines of the poem differently because sentences are split into a few lines. It makes the poem feel more

Postman then writes about how he is more stimulated by the first simile, frightening as it may be, since in a sport, the "standard of excellence is well known to both the players and spectators" (125). We know how to watch, understand, and score a sport.
Over the last several years, it has become undeniable that any kind of sport can, and will, be sensationalized and commercialized by the people from the great companies like “Coca-Cola, Pepsi Cola, and Marlboro” (1667). These companies have hundreds of thousands of dollars budgeted each year to pour into sports in the form of sponsorships, advertising, etc. Once the sponsorships are introduced into a sport, it is exactly the kind of thing that will push an athlete out of competition. An athlete will find himself in a “make-it or break-it” situation. If an athlete receives a sponsorship, then the money is free flowing for equipment, testing, training, etc – anything that the athlete wants or needs to aid in putting him...
Power Structures of Men and Women in Sports. As an athlete or spectator, it is easy to both feel and see the impact sports have on people of both genders. Athletes are able to experience sports personally, while spectators usually experience sports through different channels of mass media. Realizing the effects that the world of athletics has on individuals and society as a whole is vital to the understanding of how sports can positively and negatively affect athletes as well as spectators.
Another similar example, in hunting and fishing, you sometimes have to change your strategy, if the fish are not biting the bait. You can try a new approach by using a different type of bait or hook. When hunting, you sometimes have to try baiting the deer by putting corn out in a field plot. These similarities of the two sports both require you to think of a strategy of how to lure in the prey, and the patience to wait for the prey.
In America today athletic events play an important role in the reflective perception and financial standing of any given community. It is for this reason that the individuals involved in these events are also of significance to the community. Due to the esteemed and very influential role placed on athletes they are often times given privileges that would not normally be given to them if they were not athletes. These privileges are given in order to recruit the athletes, and once recruited to maintain their status on the team so that, in turn, the team's status is not adversely affected. To understand the importance of the role of an athlete one must first examine the role of the athletic event in which the athlete participates and the level of importance placed on this event.

The Importance of Sports to Mass Communication Understanding mass communication without attention to sport coverage is practically impossible. Through the mass media, millions and even billions of viewers, listeners and readers are brought into the experience of a great sports performance. The emotional power of sports performance, enchanted by slow-motion video and musical sound track, can take you to breath away or bring tears to your eyes. There are a lot of massive spectacles like the Super Bowl, the World Series, the NBA play-offs, the Olympic Games, and the College Football Games. Each of these sports activities takes in many millions of dollars from television revenues and dominates national sports news for days or weeks.
The point of this exploration is to delve into the math behind these sports, and see what formulas occur during a game. I chose this topic, because I love sports and play them multiple times a month. After discovering that there is arithmetical aspects of these sports I was fascinated and wanted to explore them.
Others theories have to do with what each sport allows to occur. In a sport such as hockey, where people are expected to hit and check each other as hard as they can into the boards, sooner or later a fight will break out. Many people who follow hockey watch it just for the fights and when a fight occurs they cheer on their favorite player in the fight. Playe...
The movie Invictus brings up several key points about the media in everyday life. One of the most prominent points brought up in the film is that sports have the power to bring people together and unite them with a common goal. Sports are an enormous part of the media and cultures all over the world. Whether it be the Super-bowl, World Cup, or Olympics, millions of people continue to unite and cheer for the teams they support. The reason in which sports often unites people is that it gives people something in common with one another. No matter what race, age, or gender, people of all types enjoy watching and supporting sports teams which is why it is such a powerful means to unite people.
The greatest achievement in my life would have to be my success in the sport of football. I started playing the game at the age of eight. It stuck with me throughout my life until now. During a football game there are numerous amounts of dynamic situations to be involved with. There are so many crucial actions that take place in the matter of seconds. In a certain instance in my life , the game had a strong impact on my life. It took place my senior year against our rivals, the best team in the district. That Monday we began preparing for the coming Friday. It was a typical week until I woke up Wednesday morning. I was routinely late for school running around the house. On my way out the door the phone brought me to an abrupt stop. Turning around, I started to sprint to the phone. A few steps into it, I crushed my little toe on the leg of my couch. Face down on the carpet, I proceeded to scream in pain. Answering the phone quickly got check off my things to do list. As soon as I could regain my sanity I hopped over to the couch and forgot about school. My toe suddenly turned black and swollen. It was the worst coincidence that could’ve happened to me. I went to the hospital later that day, where I heard that my foot was broken and I couldn’t play.
Sport, according to the oxford dictionary, can be defined as an activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another or others for entertainment. Sport may seem like just another, simple five letter word yet it has the power and aptitude to teach humanity such fundamental and intellectual life lessons. In my speech I will explore these vital lessons, such as failure, success, perseverance, teamwork, tolerance, responsibility and discipline by exhibiting how each lesson can be learnt and utilised.
