Different religions have shaped the cultural landscapes throughout history. In most religions, they have what is known as a sacred site. Many of the sacred sites are near the founding of the religion or near a place where something significant had once occurred. The followers of these religions often build temples to worship their gods. One example, would be the Dome of the Rock, where Muhammad, a prophet of God in the Muslim culture, said to have ascended into heaven. The Dome of the Rock is a masterpiece of Islamic architecture and is the "Noble Sanctuary" by Muslims. The place of worship for Muslims is known as the mosque, but the Dome of the Rock is much more iconic and would be best identified as a Muslim shrine. The temple was originally made for pilgrims and took thirteen years to construct. This is also a significant place for the Muslim community …show more content…
because Muhammad was the founder of the Islamic culture. In the Muslim faith, Allah is their only God and the creator of all beings while Muhammad is their profit. It is believed that Allah created all living beings by a single clot of blood. Along with their belief in those two figures, there are five pillars that are critical to the Muslim faith. These pillars are faith, prayer, fasting, the pilgrimage to Mecca, and alms. If you live your life by these pillars, then you are following the rules of the Muslim faith. Muhammad was sent by the Angel Gabriel who told him he was a prophet. Three years after the angel had visited Muhammad, he had only gained around forty followers, but now the Muslim faith has approximately 1.6 billion followers internationally. The Muslim community often refers to Muhammad as the perfect believer and that all others should strive to be like him. Unlike Jesus Christ, who is known to be the son of God in Christian beliefs, Muhammad was a mortal, and could die. Religion has shaped the burial practices throughout different cultures amongst the world.
Each religion has its own idea of what will happen in the afterlife. In Buddhism, they believe that dying is apart of an ongoing cycle until the dead receive enlightenment. This cycle is called Samsara and by definition means an ongoing cycle of life and death until that person reaches enlightenment (heaven). There is a three stage cycle that occurs from the moment you die until you are reincarnated; This process is called The Three Bardo's. The first bardo is when the soul goes into a trance and often doesn't realize that they have passed away. People recall seeing a bright light once in this trance and if that person welcomes the light then they will not be reincarnated, but most people flee from this light. The second bardo begins when the person realizes they are dead. The deceased will see everything that they have done or throughout their life. The third bardo and final stage contains a longing for possessing someone. When they do posses someone the rebirth occurs and they are reincarnated as a living
spirit. Buddhist accept death as a part of life and they see it as unavoidable; besides these facts, they still have a mourning period. Buddhist have a 49 day prayer period. They believe that the physical body dies, but the spirit goes on. The funeral should be simple and modest and those who attend should wear white to match the attire of the deceased. The bodies are commonly cremated in an article of clothing called the Shinishozoku which is known as the clothing of eternity. A shrine is then kept in the deceased home for thirty five days, and is used to keep the house "clean" from spirits. The French built a cathedral in Paris that is called the Noter-dame, one of the largest religious sites in the world. King Henry the sixth was crowned in this cathedral and was not expected to rule the British empire, until his brother suddenly died. Napoleon was also crowned there, but originally he invited pope Pius VII to come to Crown him emperor. At the last moment Napoleon seized the crown from the popes hands to crown himself. The hunch back of Noter-dame was a bell ringer at this cathedral until his story began. This monument is the most popular monument in all of Paris including the Eiffel Tower. It attracts thirteen million visitors annually even after all this time. This cathedral is a great example of the once popular gothic style that was plaguing Europe at the time it was built. Windows are supported on flying buttresses, the gargoyles are at the top of the cathedral, the doors have Old Testament kings carved into the wood, and the stain glass window, which are very important to this site. Stain glass windows are seen in some churches today, but for a more modern look are often ignored. The bells which are located in the bell tower at the top of the church had to be rang by hand until the beginning of the twentieth century. The south towers contains the Noter-dames largest bell weighing in at thirteen tons . The music that is played here is either organs or choirs. The organs that were there when it first opened its doors are still there, and in full functioning condition. The Noter-dame is home to one of the largest organs in the world.
Christianity and Islam are religions are two of world’s most widespread religions. Both religions when founded were not accepted by the people of that time and they have faced great resistance. Early Islamic art and early Christian art both are historically important as both are similar in some ways. The most earliest architecture and first such structure from the Muslims is the Dome of the Rock located in Jerusalem. When the Muslims conquered the city of Jerusalem in they needed a place (Mosque) to worship and offer their prayers in congregation. At the same time they also wanted to build a monument that would show the success of Muslims and their religion Islam. Similarly, Christians used to build their churches and monuments to show their influence and selected sites which were former Pagan temples and Catacombs to build their churches. Muslims had already conquered Syria and Byzantine and therefore used their designs to build the Dome Of The Rock. The Santa Costanza was originally built in Rome, Italy in 360c. It was erected for Constantine's daughter, however, it was later transformed into a memorial church. It is now argued by scholars that the Santa Costanza was originally built for Constantine's sister Helina.
Many religions and philosophies attempt to answer the question, what happens after a person dies? Some religions such as Christianity and Islam believe there is an afterlife. They believe that good and moral people enter Heaven or paradise and that bad and immoral people go to Hell. Other religions and cultures believe that death is final, and that nothing happens after a person dies. Buddhism and Hinduism have a different idea about death. Both of these religions originated in India. Buddhists and Hindus believe that death is not final. They believe that a person comes back after he or she dies. This process is known as reincarnation, and it provides opportunities for people to enter the world multiple times in different forms. Buddhists and Hindus want to reenter the world as humans, and they want to improve their status through reincarnation. In ancient India, many members of lower casts wanted to come back as members of higher casts. While this is an important goal of reincarnation, the main goal is to reach either moksha (Hinduism) or nirvana (Buddhism). In other words, the goal is to reach a point of spiritual enlightenment that removes the person from the reincarnation process. Geoff Childs, an anthropologist examines the views of the Buddhist religion by studying the lives of the people in Tibetan villages. He looks at issues that adversely affect these people such as infant mortality. He carefully looks at the lives of people who have been left behind by deceased loved ones, and he pays careful attention to customs and traditions surrounding death. Tibetan Buddhists view death as a means of reaching spiritual perfection, and they seek to reach this level of spiritual perfection through living spiritually meaningful lives....
The Dome of the Rock Essentially unchanged for more than thirteen centuries, the Dome of the Rock remains one of the world’s most beautiful and enduring architectural treasures. Adorned with its magnificent gold dome and elaborate quranic inscriptions, the structure intimately represents the world’s second largest religion in a city historically associated with the three Semitic faiths. Representation, however, is not the only effect of this site. Despite its intended purpose, the Dome of the Rock inherently stands as the focal center of a millennium-old religious controversy. Located on what is essentially the world’s holiest site (obviously a speculative assertion) and inscribed with proclamations of Islamic religious superiority, the Dome symbolizes far more than Muhammad’s ascension to heaven.
Afterlife. Many people are curious but afraid, they want to know what happens, but don't want to experience it themselves. Each person has their own belief about it, whether it be that we are reincarnated, that our spirit stays here on earth, that there are a heaven or hell, or simply that we die and that’s it there’s nothing to it. No matter what it is, we believe in something, and religions are shaped in a variety of ways to fit their own idea about the afterlife.
Buddhism does not look at death as a continuation of the soul but as an awakening. Dying and being reborn has been compared by some Buddhist as a candle flame. When the flame of one lit candle is touched to the wick of an unlighted candle, the light passes from one
Death in Different Religions Death has a great impact on people's lives in such a way that they learn to value life, or even live it to the fullest. But what happens to us after we die? Many religions have answered this question for us, according to their faiths. Buddhism is a religion where Buddhists believe in the concept of death and reincarnation or rebirth.
The followers of the Buddha believe life goes on and on in many reincarnations or rebirths. The eternal hope for all followers of Buddha is that through reincarnation one comes back into successively better lives - until one achieves the goal of being free from pain and suffering and not having to come back again. This wheel of rebirth, known as samsara, goes on forever or until one achieves Nirvana. The Buddhist definition of Nirvana is "the highest state of spiritual bliss, as absolute immortality through absorption of the soul into itself, but preserving individuality" (Head1 57). Birth is not the beginning and death is not the end. This cycle of life has no beginning and can go on forever without an end. The ultimate goal for every Buddhist, Nirvana, represents total enlightenment and liberation. Only through achieving this goal is one liberated from the never ending round of birth, death, and rebirth (Head3 73). Transmigration, the Buddhist cycle of birth, death, and rebirth, involves not the reincarnation of a spirit but the rebirth of a consciousness containing the seeds of good and evil deeds. Buddhism's world of transmigration encompasses three stages. The first stage in concerned with desire, which goes against the teachings of Buddha, is the lowest form and involves a rebirth into any number of hells. The second stage is one in which animals dominate. But after many reincarnations in this stage the spirit becomes more and mo...
Historical texts and religious traditions do not offer water tight answers as to why it is considered a holy Islamic monument. When the architectural evidence of location, decoration and architecture, and inscriptions are taken in historical context it’s then we can fully grasp the meaning and significance of the Dome of the Rock. It’s along with that understanding that we can draw parallels between the building and events and recreate the story of its
Now we will compare both Buddhism and Christianity. In the afterlife of Buddhism, they believe that they go to Nirvana to get reincarnated and go into a different body. In Christianity they believe that they go to Heaven or Hell. As in if you're good throughout your life you go to
On the board on Monday morning, there were numbers one through five and they each had a religion written next to them. 1 was Hinduism, 2 was Christianity, 3 was Judaism, 4 was Buddhism, and I was lucky enough to get 5: Islam. Oh, I know so much about Islam culture and their religion, are you kidding? I don’t even know where Islam is. I’m just kidding, it’s not a country. There are many differences between Islam and the United states like our religion, clothes, and food, and becoming a Christian or a Muslim, but Islam is the second largest religion in the world, so it’s important to a lot of people. The followers of Islam are called Muslims. Becoming a Muslim is not an easy process. You must do a long list of tasks. After you become a Muslim you must do everything in your power to try to have a good Muslim lifestyle.
What is going to happen to us when we will die? Some people never considered what it could happen to them after life. For many people, death is a redoubtable event because they do not know what to expect after their death. However, other persons, such as religious people are conscious of what to expect after their death because of their beliefs. Each religion has different ideas and different ways of looking life. Death, therefore, is viewed by different religions in many ways. Although, different religions have a distinct conception of death, they all have something in common: they all give hope to people. Among all different religions in the world, four of the most common ones - Catholic, Jewish, Islamic, and Hindu- view death in different ways.
I believe that when you die there are three possibilities of what will happen to you. The first one is that when you die you go to heaven. The second one is that when you die you go to hell. The third one is you will be stuck in between these two for eternity. Some people believe that the place in the middle is called purgatory and some believe they are different places.
Death is one of the hardest things to over come; while others have developed paganism for death it’s ultimately the scariest thing to face in life. Losing a best friend, a family member, or the love of your life. Therefore the death of someone special is definitely the hardest thing to face. Many people believe when someone dies, they’re sleeping, and they wake up when Jesus comes again and brings you to heaven with him, this is called Christianity, however, Buddhism believe when the body dies it disappears, but the mind goes on, which means you have no after life to experience. I personally believe after you die, you will go to a very special place, with past family members who have passed away. I also believe if you don’t think there is a God you will go to
The Buddhists belief about the afterlife is heavily revolved around the teaching of the process of being reborn and death until nirvana is achieved, and the influence of positive or negative karma. The view is that all things living will continue to live, through rebirth and the continuation of consciousness between various bodies and lives until one has attained nirvana. Each consciousness has been reborn in previous lives and will continue to do so until the entity is able obtain power over the process. This consciousness brings its past karma through each life and dictates which possible realm of existence it could be reborn in to. The Buddha explained that the endless cycle of life, death and rebirth can bring only pain and suffering. All
It modern location is in Israel. Its relevance is held in its religious civilization historical and geographical context. It is found on the artificial platform, approximately in the middle of the al-Haram al-sharif popularly known as the “original al-Aqsa mosque in Jerusalem” (Grabar, 1959). The Dome of the Rock is far from being a mosque and can be said to be a Muslim shrine. It related to the Ka'ba that can be found in Mecca and is found in a saintly rock, a stone that is thought to be the location where the Prophet Muhammad rose to the heavens as he was leaving his people for the
