The Ghazal in Cinema The Hindi film music not only offered a new space to Urdu poetry, ensured its per formative presence in the cultural landscape and bring up its heritage but also transformed it in the process, keeping it in tune with the cultural environment in India. Hindi film music provides refuge to Urdu poetry in many different ways .Here ,we look at some of these : the utilisation of Urdu poems, both classical and contemporary ,in Hindi cinema ;the incorporation of Urdu poetic idioms in songs; the influence of Urdu poetry on songs and the mutual impact of films on Urdu poetics s; and the deployment of famous Urdu poetical phrases and couplets in lyrics.

The PWA (Progressive writers association) song writers in Hindi cinema whose impact on the lyrics was formidable. Progressive Urdu poets took advantage of this exposure to introduce a new brand of poetry to their audience, pioneering a new aesthetic of realism and there by producing a quantity of thoughtful yet accessible stanza .Hindi films also served to provide a source of income to these poets;apart from the highly successful lyricists like Sahir Lu Dhianvi and Majrooh Sultanpuri, Israr-ul-Haq majaz, other PWA poets like Faiz Ahmad Faiz ,Firaq Gorakhpuri ,Kaifi Azmi,Jan Nisar Aktar,Makhdoom Mohuddin and Hasrat Mohani had their published work occasionally deployed in hindi film songs .Such songs not only infused an Urdu sensibility into the Hindi film song but also contributed to the development of a distinct lyrical style .Be it Faiz’s anguished entreaty to a beloved to forego love for a commitment to social change,Majaz’s paean to the wandering urban ‘out sider’,Kaifi’s wistful recount of breaking relation ship,Majoorh’sdescription of the commodification of love in the market place of desire,Makdoom’s fiery invocation of the emergence of love in the hearts of the passionate ,or Sahirs resigned acceptance of lost love, progressive poets used their existing body of work to enrich Hindi film songs immeasurably. Throughout the semester, various styles of music and the aspects of culture associated with these styles have been analyzed. Musical elements such as dynamics, texture, form, timbre, melody, instruments, etc., have been used to thoroughly explore each kind of music from different areas of the world, with an emphasis in music from Africa, India and Indonesia. These aspects of music go far beyond just music itself. Culture also plays a huge role in music and the accompanying musical elements. Each country and culture has a different style and distinctiveness that add to what makes the music of that certain culture unique. Music in Africa may differ dramatically from music in Indonesia or India not only due to those certain elements but also due to how it is interpreted by people and what it represents for those people. In addition to this, what one may consider music in one culture may not be music to another. These differences have been made apparent in the several demonstrations that we have been exposed to in class.
Poetry is taught in classrooms and has become a very important aspect of literature throughout the years. Whereas, songs have not, if anything, they have developed a negative connotation stating that less (words and meaning) is more (popular in society). Some people argue that song lyrics essentially are less valuable compared to poetry. Poetry is considered literature due to the fact that it is written in verses, prose, and forms that reflect the mastery of literary techniques and mechanisms. The biases between the two works, poetry and song lyrics, does a disfavor and prejudice to both. In giving one work over another the title of a valuable piece of literature, the audience is missing out on the meaning and appreciation behind the work. The difference among poetry and song lyrics seem very juvenile. At first glimpse, poetry relies solely on words alone, their sounds, tones, meanings, and silence all depend upon the individual himself reading the poem. The words within the poem take place in silent context. Whereas, lyrics relay on the same forces; however, it is supported by music. The musical artists use a lot of deliberate musical information to help exaggerate certain words and meanings. The main difference is the conditions of the environment which affect the structure of the words. To gain the full comprehension and appreciation of both pieces of work, poetry and song lyrics, is to read them with the same respect in order to see the correlation between the two.

In particular, “the film features two Chinese folk songs, Song of the Four Seasons and Songstress of the World, which are considered essential to the film’s success” (87, Historiography and Sinification). These two songs and other aspects of the film become a part of the film’s attempt at Sinification, or making things Chinese as defined in discussion. In this film and many others “filmmakers featured popular Chinese tunes in the narrative as an audio code of national authenticity” and “inserted a local Chinese signature” (87, Historiography and Sinification). The Song of the Seasons is therefore a part of the Chinese story depicted in this film, not only because of its tune, which is reminiscent of traditional music, but its content, a reference to the Japanese invasion of Manchuria, as pointed out in discussion. This song is also a story of the suffering of a young widowed woman. Music is a universal language for a reason; the audience is able to immediately connect via emotion to the sad tune, despite its foreignness to outside observers, and sympathize with the subject of the song. Through the transmittance of emotion, which acts as the human story in this case, the Chinese folk song enables the audience to sympathize more about the plight of the women associated with the song: Xiao Hong and the widowed young woman. But sometimes we have to distance ourselves in order to see with a grain of truth, to see the whole picture, to make informative decisions. Through this medium change there can be some things that are strengthened and some limitations. The movie would improve the imagery of the poem and it would reach a wider audience. But there would be some limitations like the message would be lost or the main story could be lost due to the extra length of the story.
