The first piece is “My Favorite Things” from the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical, The Sound of Music, vocals by Julie Andrews The genre of this piece is musicals. The medium for this is vocals, sung by Julie Andrews with an orchestra accompaniment as strings, woodwinds, piano, and brass can be heard throughout the piece. This song is a secular polyphonic piece that is tonal and based on a minor scale. The piece I felt was consonant and definitely had a melody line. This piece of music had a lot of legato notes. I would consider the tempo of the piece to be allegro. It has some crescendos that can be heard. The dynamics of the song is forte ranging up to mezzo forte,
The second song is called “One” a Metallica cover by Stary Olsa.
The genre of this song is medieval folk. The medium for this song is vocals, with an accompaniment of medieval instruments, that resemble a lute, recorder, bagpipe, guitar, and percussion. This piece is tonal based on a minor scale. The piece I felt was consonant and definitely had a melody line. This piece of music had a lot of legato notes on the vocal and recorder’s part and I heard a few crescendos and decrescendos. I would consider the tempo of the piece to be andante and allegretto at the very end, and the dynamics are forte throughout. This was a secular piece and homophonic. The third piece is “Prelude in E Minor” by Frederic Chopin. The medium for this piece is piano and the genre is classical. This piece is consonant, tonal, had a melody line, and is based on a minor scale. The entire piece seemed as if all the main notes were legato notes. I did hear a crescendo and decrescendo in the middle of the piece. I would consider the tempo of the piece to be largo. The dynamics throughout the piece were piano with a small amount of forte in the middle. This was a secular piece and homophonic. The fourth piece is Antonio Vivaldi’s “La Primavera” (Spring) from The Four Seasons. The medium for this piece is strings and the genre is classical. This piece is consonant, tonal, had a melody line, and is based on a major scale. I would consider the tempo of the piece to be allegro. However, it seems like a third of the way through the song switched to a minor scale and the tempo changed to grave. Then two-thirds the way through, it went back to the original major scale and original allegro tempo. I did hear many crescendos, decrescendos, accelerandos, and ritardandos throughout the piece. This is a secular piece and I felt was monophonic in some parts and homophonic in some parts as well. The fifth piece is called “Stompin’ at the Savoy” by Benny Goodwin. The genre of this piece is jazz. The medium for this piece is clarinet, piano, percussion, and bass. This piece is also consonant, tonal, had a melody line, and is based on a major scale. This piece of music had a lot of legato notes. I would consider the tempo of the piece to be vivace. I did not hear any accelerandos, ritardandos, crescendos, or decrescendos. The dynamics of the piece was mezzo forte. This was a secular piece and polyphonic.
There was a vocal recital on October 19th, 2017 at 7:30PM, held at the performance hall in Mountain view college. Alex Longnecker, a tenor vocalist and Imre Patkai, (pianist) played a series of homophonic textured songs, some being sung in German and others in English. The Three selected songs I will be writing about are, The Lincolnshire Poacher, The Plough Boy, and Im Wunderschonen Monat Mai. This performance played a total of 24 Pieces, composed by 4 composers, being Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Ernest Chausson, Benjamin Britten, and Robert Schumann.
The live theatrical production I chose to see was 9 to 5 The Musical. The production was performed by Fayetteville Technical Community College’s very own Fine Arts Department. The musical is based on the film released by Fox in 1980. Collin Higgins adapted the film from the book 9 to 5 written by Patricia Resnick. It wasn’t until 2008 that the film was adapted to a theatrical production. The production was originally brought to broadway by Robert Greenbait and Dolly Parton wrote the lyrics and the music for the Musical. The run on broadway was very short but the production later toured in other countries around the around the world.
The Wiz is a musical/movie released in 1978 that was an adaptation of the popular film “Wizard of Oz”. It included several very popular stars of the time, which were Diana Ross, Michael Jackson and Nipsey Russell. The movie set place in New York City where the main character, Dorothy, suddenly is swept by a tornado in the middle of a snowstorm. She later then found herself lost in a city she had no clue about and curious as to how she could return home. After meeting 3 other characters during her journey that share similarities, they all embarked on a trip to OZ to fix each of their problems. Throughout the movie characters apply their own soundtrack through singing songs in harmony that compliment the mood of each scene.
Into the Woods is a musical based off of classic Grimms Brothers’ characters and their fairytales. The production explores the consequences of their wishes and the quests that they fulfill and take on. In writing this play, it seems as though Sondheim and Lapine were attempting to bring to life the classic fairytales of their youth with a twist of reality. Through this portrayal of classic tales, the audience is also taken back into their childhood for the entire two hours and forty-five minutes.
The first song, “Love for Sale” had a constant tempo. It also had a slow, funky, and earthy sound to it, which would make it fall under the blues category. The guitarist seemed to be improvising during his solo. The drummer was mostly using the crash cymbal and the high hat. He was also acting as the timekeeper in this piece. The second song entitled “Once I Loved” was a standard tune from Brazil. It had a similar sound as “Love for Sale,” however one of the differences was that the bassist was using the pizzicato technique instead of the arco technique as he did in the first piece, except during his solo.
The first song played was from a genre that I had previously taken a test on, Sonata. The musicians played the song by the book. There were three movements and polyphonic texture. It was even fast and jerky. Nonetheless, this is the part where my rollercoaster was going down. In my opinion it was boring. Although very well played, the song itself did not interest me. I did not like the roadrunner, coyote essence of the song. The piano accompaniment would sometimes play the melody and let the clarinet follow and then they would switch. This to me seemed force instead of like the Sonatas that I listened to in class. However, apart from the musical aspect of the first piece there was a certain intensity expressed by the performers. I had never seen a
The third piece was Pale Blue on Deep by Aaron Perinne. This piece caught me off guard in the very beginning with the dissonance between some of the instruments, but it began to get more consonant as the piece progressed. It also started off giving me a dark and eerie feeling until it would suddenly shift to a more light and ambitious sound. The feel of this piece fluctuated a lot between ominous and excited, as well as a few other similar emotions on the light and dark sides of emotion. This piece very much felt like there is a story behind it, but I am unable to decipher what that story
The first work was played was called Suite: 3 Airs, composed by Elisabeth Jacquet de la Guerre (1666-1729) from the Baroque period. This piece had a very stepwise and conjunct melody. The key was mostly bright and major. The harmony was a bit resolving and consonant. The polyphonic texture was recognizable because of the multiple melodies playing together. The tempo of this piece was very constant and remained allegretto throughout. The dynamics was mezzo forte or moderately loud. The formal structure was in the ternary form in which the main idea of the piece was repeating after a small contrast in the middle. Overall, this piece seemed quite unique to me because it was my first time listening to the organ.
Hip-Hop’s criticism of George W. Bush is a good example of hip-hop’s reflection of Black public opinion. The Republican candidate who already had a low approval rating of 57% amongst African-Americans received an even lower approval rating after his lackluster efforts to support Louisiana after Hurricane Katrina in 2005 (Jones, 2003; Cillizza & Sullivan 2013).
The next element I discovered was the pitch of the music. Relatively speaking, I would estimate that the majority of the pieces were on the high side of the pitch, and therefore frequency, scale. The range of pitches was moderate, but as stated previously, mostly higher notes were used.
Major social and economical changes occurred in the United States during the time of 1917-1935. At the beginning of the time period the United States military entered into World War I. Over the next twenty-three years’ important events that took place included the Eighteenth Amendment, starting prohibition, the Nineteenth Amendment, giving women the right to vote, and the United States entering into the Great Depression. In chapter three of American Popular Music the author describes these events in direct correlation to the music history. Major points regarding what influenced the nations culture and identity included the popularization of radio, the Jazz Age, and the successful Paul Whiteman.

The second piece, Paratum Cor Meum, was a much shorter piece with very few lyrics. It was interesting to hear a piece by Haydn, since we had discussed this composer in class. I was impressed by the choir members’ ability to remember words in another language, and I enjoyed the sounds of the piano accompaniment.
The first piece on the program was Polonaise from Eugene Onegin (1878). This piece is from the Romantic period composed by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikavosky (1840-1893). Very short piece probably around six minutes. The variations and the interesting theme made this piece the most interesting among the other compositions despite the length of this piece, but it was amusing. The piece started with trumpets playing short high notes as an introductory, with the accompaniment of violins playing quick short notes. It sounds like if it was played in a major key, very cheerful and very fast like if the tempo is Vivace. Moreover, trumpets throughout the piece reinforce the harmony. Throughout the piece varies styles were used such as legato (smooth connected style). The texture of this piece is homophonic ( one line of real interest with accompaniment). The rhythm of the piece is really catchy, pretty much predictable; most of the piece variations are centered on the main theme, but it is very pleasing to the ears (consonant).
The third piece was a duet for the flute and the oboe by Julia Grace Brown. The piece contained two movements, but I could not tell when one stopped and the second began because there was no pause. While they played the flute was quicker, playing in short, fast, high pitched notes. On the other hand, the oboe was steadier and carried the notes slightly longer, and it lead the flute through the song. Sometimes the two instruments played simultaneously, and sometimes the flute would mimic the oboe and follow it through the movement. Overall, the piece started out fast and eventually slowed with the two instruments ending together, but the flute always played in a higher range with a more piercing ...
