Munich Olympic Games The Germans hosted the 1972 Olympic Games, dubbed “The Peaceful Games” as it was Germanys first time hosting the games since the end of World War II. However, just ten days in the games became anything but peaceful. On the morning of September 5th, five members of the Palestinian faction, Black September, scaled the walls around the men’s housing complex. No one knew the historical significance that these men were about to play as millions of people watch in horror the events unfold over 24 hours. In this paper, we will discuss the details of these events and identify three examples of how they influenced future international terrorism and counterterrorism activities across the world. The plan failed almost as soon as it began. It began with the use of poorly trained “snipers” who were chosen because they shot competitively on the weekends. This was made worse by the abandonment of the flight crew team, leaving only the poorly trained snipers to eliminate the terrorists. In the ensuing gun battle left two of the terrorists dead, as well as a German police officer. Just past midnight on September 6th, one of the terrorists moved to the helicopter the hostages were in and shot them at point-blank range, then used a grenade to destroy the helicopter and kill the remaining hostages. In another botch by the German government, the news reported across the world that all the hostages were alive and all the terrorist killed. However, all the hostages lay dead with three of the terrorist surviving the attack only to be released two months later after members hijacked a plane and threatened to blow it up unless the three were
