Multicultural week El Cajon Valley High School is filled with love and happiness that every single student shares their moments together. As we all know, there are so many different type of students in our school and they have came from many different countries that have different culture. Our school joins everyone from all over the world and unites them together. We call this unity through diversity in our school. One of the amazing event in our school that the majority of the students enjoy watching is multicultural week. Multicultural is where some of the students in our school participate to present their own country by performing or holding a flag or do any activity that reflect the traditions of their country. Participating in multicultural
week means so much to me. I was part of this event because I wanted to present my country and also other countries around the world. It's really important to me because I get to share and be with other students to perform each country.It was good experince for me becouse I try some thing diffrent and that shows where I came from. The reason why I participated in multicultural was because I wanted to show Unity through Diversity and how our school brings together everyone and also how to know other country traditions. I participated in multicultural week as a flag carrier. I was carrying a United Nation flag which is I stand in middle of the circle that teacher make and stand beside the United State flag. Other students performed so many different types of dancing. Each group had presented their own dance movements with different kind of music the reflect their country . Celebrating Unity through Diversity is important for our school and our society because our school is very diverse, so when we celebrate our diversity it makes students feel at home because they become comfortable when they represent their countries. Our school always brings students together through many different ways. Multicultural is one of the biggest events that impacts the students and makes them feel like home. Celebrating multicultural is the best thing our school provides.
Latino grassroots politics in the academic realm has been considered as predominantly Chicano in nature. However, the geometry of this academic sector is no longer one dimensional, due to the formation of a Chicana feminist consciousness; the rise of an identified gay community within the Chicana/o student populace; and the emergence of “Latinos” in era of Chicanismo, The abrupt growth of Latinos (e.g. Spanish speaking of Mexican, Central or Latin American decent) in the United State’s educational system led the general population to characterize them as subjects on the cusps of political power and influence. But this widespread depiction of Latinos as an untapped potential is intrinsically linked to an impression of civic cohesion within the Latino student population. Although there is a correspondence between these parties in terms of the alienation they have felt and the discrimination they have endured throughout their academic careers, there is a minimal collective effort in confronting against their oppressive status. This is mainly a result of conflicting ideologies and social agendas within the Latino student community, as well as the relegation of Hispanic subgroups into the lower echelons. Latino students, nevertheless, have demonstrated their capacity, when both Chicanos and the marginalized Hispanic subgroups join efforts to reach a communal objective. This debunks the historical notion that Chicano students are the only group of Hispanics in the academic sphere that have been actively challenging the processes of social exclusion, and also displays the capacity of a collaborative effort.
Upon initial research of the rich heritage of California the two minority groups that stood out as especially influential in historic California and today’s society are the Native Americans and Hispanic Americans. To better understand and identify with these minority groups we must identify the common themes within their day to day life. By researching each culture’s common family traditions, religious beliefs, arts & entertainment, and language one can gain a greater appreciation of many different kinds of people, and in turn have more effective relationships in a multicultural society.
Imagine seeing 10,000 of your classmates walking out of your school because they wanted a better education - a better way of life. In the 1960s’ Chicano students were being “pushed out”(Esparza) of school or being pushed towards vocational programs. East L.A was home to schools were “one out of every four Chicano’s completed high school”(Esparza). Instructors and the school board alike did not have an interest in helping Chicanos finish school to become someone other than a laborer and was expected of them to keep being a laborer. In “Taking Back the Schools”, Sal Castro a high school counselor claims, “I think the bottom line is the lack of concern of the teachers towards the kids and whether the kids were really getting an education or not...the reality set in that the teachers weren’t really concern for the kids.”(Esparza).
This area, in many, ways represents the heart of the "American Melting Pot," the population of the City and subsequently of the student body, represents virtually every race, nationality, ethnicity, and religious and cultural tradition in the world. The students enrolled in City public schools alone, speak 140 different primary languages ranging from Chinese, Japanese and Korean, to Russian, Urdu, Bengali and Arabic. For this reason, and others City educators have seen it as an important responsibility to educate students about the different cultures and ethnicities surrounding them. The excitement over traditional year-end festivities celebrating traditions such as Christmas, Chanukah, Ramadan and Kwanzaa, presented an opportunity to teach the students about and encourage respect for different cultures in the community. Because some of these traditions have religious origins, special care was taken in determining what representative symbols could appropriately be displayed in the public schools without violating the First Amendment, by seeming to promote religion. Indeed, in all their schools from elementary to secondary schools, they already adopted curricula that will foster cultural diversity. Through this program, students from different levels had the chance to be exposed to different traditions and customs of various ethnic and racial groups. Even the government sectors in the United States are advocating tolerance for diversity, like how they commemorate Asian American, Hispanic, and Pacific Islander Heritage weeks (Margai, 2010). Even in their postage, they developed stamps highlighting some prominent Americans along with their diverse backgrounds. Despite all these efforts, sometimes the issue concerning multiculturalism causes significant political and societal conflicts. Right now, United States is widely known as the greatest melting pot where people from different countries and with different cultures could be united as one. However, people have divided views with regards to the issue whether the immigrants should adopt America’s culture, or they should be given the freedom to keep their own culture. The majority of the Americans believed that one must learn first how to speak English before permitting to have an American citizenship. The term Hispanic is used to describe Spanish speaking natives. Spanish is one of the fastest expanding languages in the world and accounts for 21 different countries as their official language. About half of Hispanics originate in Mexico, and there is a lot diversity within the 21 Hispanics countries, therefore even their own traditions and heritages will be specific to them. It is also important to remember that most Hispanics do not like to be referred to as Hispanic but instead from where they reside; for example, Mexican American and Puerto Rican. I am mainly Mexican and German. My extended family’s cultural and racial background is a wide mix of African American, Asian, Jewish, Mexican, and White. In my personal household, we celebrate holidays such as Christmas and Thanksgiving. We do not celebrate many traditional Mexican holidays, but Mexican cultural was always very prevalent in my household thanks to my grandmother. My high school is located in my hometown of Elk River. This area is a suburb. My high school, Elk River High School, is fairly big. In my graduating class there was around 400 students. The school has some diversity, but not much. Multicultural education is a process of comprehensive school reform and basic education for all students. It challenges and rejects racism and other forms of discrimination in schools and society and accepts and affirms pluralism (ethnic, racial, linguistic, religious, economic, and gender, among others) that students, their communities, and teachers reflect (Nieto, 2000).
The cultural diversity in society, which is reflected in schools, is forcing schools not to solely rely on content-centered curriculum, but to also incorporate student-centered lesson plans based on critique and inquiry. This requires multicultural education to a dominant part of the school system, not just an extra course or unit. Further, it demands that learning itself no longer be seen as obtaining knowledge but rather, education be seen as creating knowledge. Multicultural education should be seen as affirming the diversity of students and communities, promoting the multicultural ideas of the United States, and building the knowledge and behaviors needed for students to be a positive and contributing member of society and the global community as a whole.
The world is currently undergoing a cultural change, and we live in an increasingly diverse society. This change is not only affect the people in the community but also affect the way education is viewed. Teaching diversity in the classroom and focusing multicultural activities in the programs can help improve positive social behavior in children. There is no question that the education must be prepared to embrace the diversity and to teach an increasingly diverse population of young children.
There are many factors that play a role in the learning process for every human being. Race, religion, language, socioeconomics, gender, family structure, and disabilities can all affect the ways in which we learn. Educators must take special measures in the delivery of classroom instruction to celebrate the learning and cultural differences of each of their students. As communities and schools continue to grow in diversity, teachers are searching for effective educational programs to accommodate the various learning styles of each student while promoting acceptance of cultural differences throughout the classroom. It no longer suffices to plan educational experiences only for middle-or upper class white learners and then expect students of other social classes and cultures to change perspectives on motivation and competition, learning styles, and attitudes and values that their homes and families have instilled in them (Manning & Baruth, 2009).
The greatest example of multiculturalism today is the world of electronic dance music festivals, and music festivals in general. These large festivals attract crowds well over 100,000 attendees, many of which are from all different types of backgrounds. For example, Electronic Daisy Carnival in Las Vegas, Nevada which is held annually every June, attracts hundreds of thousands of individuals all coming together to celebrate their love of dance music. At Electronic Daisy Carnival or EDC as it is known, no judgments are passed on people for any reason such as race, gender, sexual orientation, socio-economic background, or age. Everyone that attends is treated with love and respect. Many people who attend these festivals have a motto that they base their actions on known as P.L.U.R. which stands for peace, love, unity, and respect. You treat others with love kindness and respect in order to have unity, not many other places or events can boast that this type of interaction amongst individuals can be achieved. At EDC everyone is treated as equals, no one group who feels that they are better than another group for any reason. Unfortunately, in other aspects of our society there is an emphasis on seeing the differences in one another, which divides people instead of bringing them closer to help achieve a multicultural world. “¿Itzel, Ya estas lista para la escuela?” this was the question my mother would ask me every morning before going to school. There were day that I would dread that question but there was also days that I was excited to go to school. I was a bilingual student in the second grade and I was struggling academically. My teacher was so nice and patient it made things a lot of better for me that year. Specifically, at the school I was attending at the time, the bilingual class was looked at very poorly for we had been known as the “Spanish” kids or “Mexican” kids. My bilingual class in second grade was taught in Spanish and English, but the years previously, we had taught strictly just Spanish in kinder and strictly just English in first grade.
