Introduction
To control flystrike we would perform mulesing in a safe and sanitary environment using suitable pain relief and if needed, veterinary guidance.
Mulesing, developed in 1927 by John Mules, is a routine husbandry procedure performed, mostly on merino sheep in Australia, during the cooler months of the year to avoid attracting more flies (Mulesing of Sheep, n.d.). It involves cutting a slice of skin from each side of the buttocks area (the usual cut is about 5-7 cm in width each side) and extends slightly less than half way from the anus to the hock of the back leg in length. Skin can sometimes be stripped from the sides and the end of the tail stub. The procedure is ‘usually’ done without any anesthetic however, with recent laws and regulations being enforced, mulesing is slowly being phased out.
Mulesing does reduce the incidence of fly strike around the buttocks because as the skin scars and tightens from the cut the flies have nowhere to lay eggs. Mulesing only affects the buttocks region on the sheep and does not prevent fly strike on other parts of the body (Animals Australia, n.d.).
Because the scared skin has no folds or wrinkles to hold moisture and feces it makes the sheep less susceptible to fly strike. If sheep are left un-mulesed maggots develop in the wrinkles and eat the flesh of the sheep (New Merino, n.d.).
Lambs are known to be in pain up to 3 days following mulesing and over 20 million merino lambs are currently mulesed each year. It is estimated also that 3 million sheep die per year due to fly strike (Animals Australia, n.d.).
Mulesing causes pain obviously but so does a sheep dying from fly strike so the argument is that mulesing is...

...an entire industry, not Australia, obviously, because it's my favorite country” (SMH, 2007).
"Then going back, I was speaking without thinking and I actually did say ban Australia, which is bullshit. It's not something that I can agree with" (SMH, 2007).
PETA's campaign has hurt the Australian wool industry and its exports, “with some American and British clothing retailers agreeing to the boycott. But many big retailers, including Italian clothing giant Benetton, have refused to back the campaign” (SMH, 2007).
Mulesing is a controversial topic and many people object completely to it however, if there are no alternatives, which sometimes there aren’t, mulesing is the only option for the farmer to perform most effective for the animal as well as the farmer. Mulesing should be performed in a safe and sanitary environment with veterinary assistance as required.
This was passed through a rider inserted by Senator Burns. The bill forces the Bureau of Land Management “to sell "without limitation" every captured horse that is 10 or older or has proved unadoptable” (Murr, 51). Howard Crystal, a lawyer for the Humane Society adds that " [the bill] consigns thousands of horses to death," prompting horse advocates for a more humane solution to the overcrowding of horses in current government management. Also, to manage the excess horses, the BLM also has debated whether to induce euthanasia on the horses. However, due to backlash to animal activist communities, the BLM are inconclusive on using lethal

The modern fight for animal rights has been geared toward factory farms and the removal of animal testing and ag-gag laws. Protection for test animals and farm animals has become an important focus for many animal rights groups including ASPCA. The end of uncomfortable and inhumane treatment of animals is still a fight thousands are fighting
The meningeal worm is also known as the brain worm, or the deer worm. It frequently infects llamas and alpacas, but can infect other species as well like moose, elk, goats, and sheep. The meningeal worm is an internal parasite that is a part of the protostrongylidae family with the definitive host being the common white tailed deer. Even though they are the host, adult meningeal worms rarely cause clinical signs of disease in the deer. The white tail deer’s tolerance to infection from these worms is actually beneficial to the parasite because the white tail deer are the only species that will allow the worm to complete their life cycle.
The use of the cattle prod is one of the most widely believe myths of rodeo. “The cattle prod is a device developed by the cattle industry to move livestock. Use of the prod has become one of the most universally accepted and humane methods of herding animals on ranches, in veterinary clinics, and, on occasion, at professional rodeos. The PRCA also regulates the use of prods. PRCA rules require that the prod be used as little as possible and that the animal be touched only on the hip or shoulder area.” (PRCA Rodeo Equipment) “An electric prod provides a low current shock to induce the movement of the animals. This type of prod does not harm the animals, as it provides a mild electrical shock sensation that leaves no prolonged effects.” (PRCA Rodeo
Abuse is a hard word to define; but one knows it when one sees it. Being force-fed unnatural diets, receiving unneeded injections of hormones and antibiotics, both natural and synthetic, slaughtered while still conscious and fully capable of feeling pain, unprecedented prodding with electrical cattle prods, filthy and cramped living conditions—this is abuse, and is common in the business of meat production. Many of these are considered violations of HMSA, but still many forms of abuse are legal. HMSA defines a violation as use of excessive force, dragging conscious animals, not providing water, not providing food if an animal will be held in a pen for 24 hours, not providing room to lie down if an animal is being held overnight, and slaughtering still-conscious animals (“Humane Slaughter”). HMSA does not regulate the antibiotics and hormones injected into ...
Humans are not the only ones who can be infected with Anthrax; livestock can also be infected with the bacteria. Animals such as cattle, sheep, or goats infected with anthrax will display the following symptoms; weakness, staggering fever, and difficulty breathing. These animals will also experience blood stained or tarry discharge from the nose or anus that continues to ooze even after the animal dies.
...event future water and air pollution. In addition, all animal cruelty practices such as 'debeaking' should be outlawed. Practices of keeping animals in confined spaces should be outlawed. Farm animals should be required to have enough space to accommodate all the farm animals at each farm. There should also be mandatory yearly inspection at each place that intends to sell their meat, dairy and egg products to buyers. If an inspection is denied, the farmer should be fined. Animal right groups such as PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) suggest boycotting meat and dairy products from factory farms to raise more awareness of the cruelty to farm animals. Boycotting these farms is an acceptable response to bring attention to this problem and to get states to pass laws to make animal cruelty not only illegal towards household pets, but also farm animals.
When it comes to wool one imagines idyllic surroundings and sheep who naturally shed their coats or need haircuts to keep cool during hot summer months, and one may believe sheep live this life until the final breath, but ones imagination is far from the truth. Even though wool is a multimillion dollar a year industry, due to the welfare of the animals that unwillingly have to participate this industry should be shut down. Lyn White, campaign director for Animals Australia states “Australian wool producers are striving to produce ultra-fine wool to supply the demand from elite fashion houses both in Australia and overseas. Each year, leading Italian fashion house Ermenegildo Zegna presents the prestigious ultra-fine wool industry trophy -- the Vellus Aureum Trophy -- awarded for the finest micron fleece. This year the trophy was awarded to The Wool Factory from Horsham, Victoria by Count Paulo Zegna and Australia's Gov...
America focuses heavily on its livestock and crops earning us a major role in global trade as a farming nation. Unfortunately this has led to some poor choices in treatment of our animals. Many farmers who believe in animal rights say that it started back when farmers only tended to fewer animals, “Ownership of farm animals became concentrated in fewer hands, and flocks and herds grew larger. As a result, the individuality of animals was lost to their owners and they began receding from most people's everyday life” (Namit 29). When people lost their connection to the animals that provided their food, the quality of the animal's lives began to dramatically decrease. Consumers constantly pushed farmers to their limits with high quotas. To keep up with demands agriculturalists turned to some unorthodox practices to keep costs low and still maintain their annual quotas; “To raise efficiency and cut costs, farm animals began to be engineered for abnormally rapid weight gain, fed unnatu...
Sheep were the first animals domesticated for a food source. Domestication exists so that people always have a source of fresh meat and don’t have to wait a few days till they can find game again. (Diamond, 2002)
Pest infestation can put your food product and your health at risk because the pest introduce the bacteria that can contaminate the food and cause diseases. Pest such as flies, cockroaches, rat, mice, birds, ants are the main sources of food contamination. There are a lot of measures can be taken to control the pest. Windows and doors in a food preparation area or food premises that open from time to time to the outside should be screened and repair the defects in the building wall, crack in the windows and gaps around the pipes. This is to prevent the access of the pests. Besides that, electronic fly killers should be installed to control flies that can spread pathogens to our food and cause food poisoning. This device works by attracting the flying insects to a blue ultra-violet light and then electrocuting them. Moreover, using of fly spray is not allowed to kill the pest because fly spray may contain some chemicals, and will cause some possible contamination to the food stuff. In addition, regular checking and inspecting for the signs of pests like rodent droppings, insect egg cases and dead insects should be carried out in order to keep them out of the food preparation and storage area. Moreover, a licensed pest controller can be hired to visit the food premises regularly. Furthermore, all the food areas should be kept in a clean condition. Food spillages should be avoided as it may attract pests.
What many scientists do not realise is that the effect of a certain drug may differ on animals and humans. Animals that are used to test the drug on may be prone to suffering and torture.
