Throughout my life I have seen how people admire artists and singers. For whatever reasons, these individuals have built careers to fulfill their need for money and fame. Many singers and artists that appear on television have started from the bottom and worked their way up in the world of entertainment. In doing so, their stories have impacted the lives of many people. In addition to these individuals, many admire the superheroes, with their superpowers, that they have grown up watching. But, it is not singers, artists, or superheroes that have had an influence on me; it was a teacher. It took me two years to realize what a great impact one of my high school teachers had on me; she is a fantastic teacher with many strengths and great …show more content…
Rojas is the symbol of wisdom and support. This wonderful teacher has also motivated many of my peers to learn the English language to success in this country. She completely supports students to do well in all aspects of life, not only in school. Mrs. Rojas founded CLUB ELLOS (English Language Learner Opting For Success) at our school. The role of ELLOS is to fundraise and collect money for scholarships. No other teachers in high school had thought of creating a club of this type, which invokes students to work for their own best interests. Mr. Rojas has been a friendly supporter for many students. One of her students stated that Mrs. Rojas is a great support for her, because she has helped her with serious circumstances. According to this student, “I was about to leave school, because it seemed to be hard for me to learn a different language, but Mrs. Rojas told me about her experience learning the English language.” This suggests the power that Mrs. Rojas has to encourage students to continue with their education. She knows the key to succeed, and she is a role model to follow for many students. Mrs. Rojas shows students her leadership qualities in helping students to improve their academic standards. She truly cares for her students. This lady has provided her
For a majority of children, their role model is their favorite celebrity. These celebrities tend to be athletes, or musicians. Several gifted children admire people who are not as famous, such as famous scientists, authors, or artists. While an intellectual child may be a fan of a celebrity, they may not look up to them in the same way other students would. “Certainly the image presented by modern celebrities suggests that intellectualism has no ties to success and social legitimacy,” which explains how celebrities are practically promoting anti-intellectualism (Penrod, 755). Other students will likely find intellectuals’ role models strange and will tease both the role models and the intellectual children, which decreases their reputation with the intellectuals. Nobody wants to be friends with someone who mocks their role model. When everybody is making fun of an intellectual’s role model, the chances of an intellectual socializing are slim for his ir her feelings are hurt. If the people setting examples were intellectuals, the anti-intellectual movement would probably be different, but as of now, the only way for gifted people to be popular is to change the world with whatever they do best. Changing the world sounds much harder when an intellectual student does not have
When I was growing up, my mother's limited English limited my perception of her, Tan explains. She describes situations where her mother was treated rudely and explains that apologies were always proposed when Tan would interrupt with flawless English. Tan also discusses the educational problems that multicultural students face within the classroom today. She points out that the educational system is in need of a change because they also have teachers who are steering them away from writing and into math and science, which is what happened to me.... ...

“Achievement of Desire”, an essay written by Richard Rodriguez, which describes the struggle a boy, has to go through to balance the life of academics and the life of a middle class family. As a son Rodriguez sees the illiteracy off his parents, and is embarrassed of it, and as a student Rodriguez sees the person that he wants to be, a teacher, a person of authority and person of knowledge. Rodriguez tells his personal story of education, family, culture and the way he is torn in-between it all. In this essay, Rodriguez uses the term of a of a “Scholarship boy” meaning a “good student” and “troubled son”, he believes that being a scholarship boy makes him feel separation and isolation as he goes further in his education and Rodriguez insist that the feelings of separation and isolation are universal feeling.
Education is a topic that can be explored in many ways. Education is looked at in depth by both Richard Rodriguez in his essay, “The Achievement of Desire”, and by Paulo Freire in his essay, “The ‘Banking’ Concept of Education.” After reading both essays, one can make some assumptions about different methods of education and exactly by which method Rodriguez was taught. The types of relationships Rodriguez had with his teachers, family and in life were affected by specific styles of education.
The measure of a person is rarely calculated by the limitations and obstacles that surround the individual, but more so how he or she was able to persevere. Growing up with a mother whose English skills were at a bare minimum, many would consider this to be my Achilles heel in furthering my education. Just as Tan said, “I [too] happen to be rebell...
There is no doubt that conformity is essential to the harmony of society. It allows for individuals to work together under a uniform set of rules and norms. In childhood and adolescence, the time during which students go to school, children begin to learn these basic rules of civilization. They socialize with others, learn respect and become well-rounded individuals. This requires students to not only develop their talents but also their weaknesses. This Achilles' heel may be academic, such as math and science or more artistic, like vocal music (Source F). Although students may not be pursuing a future in these areas, learning them is part of becoming a balanced person academically. Only strengthening and focusing on a student’s specific talent could create an image...
Whether or not adults can see it, they are the major influences in the lives of children. Although children do look up to media and sports figures, it is those that have direct interaction, and time spent with those they love and look up to on a daily basis that they truly learn from and mold themselves around based on the adult influences in their lives. That being said this makes parents, and family members the true heroes in their lives. Parents want their children to develop family values, and to be kind, caring and courteous, which are not always attributes that the media, and sports figures possess, (Holub, Tisak, & Mullins, 2008) Many studies have been developed to determine who children tend to idolize most, and describe as their heroes, and most children associate the word hero with someone they know personally, and not someone in the media. Anderson, and Cavallaro state, "70 percent of the African American and 64 percent of the White children chose people they knew as heroes. In contrast, only 35 percent of the Asian American kids and 49 percent of the Latino kids named people they knew." (2002) These numbers are huge, and show that adults are truly major influences in who children view as heroes. As a society, everyone needs to realize the impact that is made by the choices that are...
We believe that every student in our school is capable of learning and thinking at high levels. We will meet the academic and social/emotional needs of all of our students including students with disabilities, English language learners, high achievers, and struggling learners. We will challenge each student by providing a safe and nurturing learning environment that encourages self- expression and creativity, and by setting high expectation, utilizing rigorous, research-base...
Education in the United States allows the future to progress and create a country that encompasses able individuals. As a Progressivist and Essentialist, my students are the center of learning, planning and progressing. As the nurturer in my classroom, my students will continue to develop into proficient individuals that will make a positive impact on their environment. I will guide my students to choose their own way of learning by aligning curriculum to each individual. By individualizing learning, my students will develop and progress on their own level, which will lead to success. Each student’s family will be actively involved in their student’s education, as each individual’s family is the foundation of their life. The community will
I enjoyed my service learning experience and learned a lot from my little third graders. Being able to work with them, also changed my way of thinking about ESOL students. These students are often put at a side because of their lack of English proficiency. However, even though these students face a huge challenge, they give their best every day in the classroom. For my third graders, there was not high fence that they couldn’t reach. The teacher will set high expectation for them, and they will meet them all. These students changed my perception on what really happens in a ESOL
Granted that some aports players can be good role models for their fans and making an adloesence believe in themselves that they can do something great in their life that they never thought possible. But a teacher can show a student that they can also do things they never thought possible. A teacher has the ability to change lives of many students. They should be given more gratitude for doing what they do and for dealing with the stereotypes and disapproval of the students lives they’re trying to change.
When celebrities make the choice to become famous, they take on a big job of becoming a role model. Most children across America believe and rely on athletes to be their good examples. Ian Mendes states that, “Athletes may have money, fame
...pupils are expected to use and learn a new language and new cultural dispositions effectively In addition, she comprehended that having a motivation to succeed is an issue that male and female pupils face because they do not believe that their efforts will develop their performance. What is more, she apprehended that that many general education teachers do not follow the instructions of the IEP’s nor even read the IEP's, and believe that their learning disabled students are just lazy. At the end of the day, the children are the future and need individuals surrounding them that will have their best interest at heart. By everyone (educators, parents, community leaders, etc…) working together as a team (T-Together, E-Everyone, A-Achieves, M-More), we will be prosperous in helping and guiding pupils in becoming future leaders, as well as productive citizens in society.
Every classroom is filled with different students and different ways of learning. No two function the same. Therefore, as a teacher, you must create your own learning atmosphere. In my classroom, I hope to have a rich learning environment that corresponds to children of any race and cultural, those who are English Language learners (ELLs) and students with special needs. Furthermore, my classroom should also be a place of collaboration between the teacher and family. Building this strong relationship is important for everyone in the classroom.
