In the short story, “The Story of an Hour” by Kate Chopin it seems like Mrs. Mallard loves her husband's as she was hurt and was crying when she heard the news of her husband's death (Chopin 13). But at the same time the narrator also states that “When she abandoned herself a little whispered word escaped her slightly parted lips. She said it over and over under her breath: “free, free, free!” which means that she is getting freedom from Brently which she wants to get rid of and she is all alone and independent after that (Chopin 13). She was happy and was also ready for her new independent life. Kate Chopin also states that “And yet she had loved him- sometimes. Often, she had not” which signifies that Mrs. Mallard doesn’t love her husband often, may be because they had some issue or maybe because Mr. Mallard didn’t treat her well (Chopin 14). Gilman States that, “John is a physician, and perhaps that is one reason I don’t get well faster” (Gilman 221). She states this because she was sick, but John refuses to believe her and told her it is just a temporary nervous depression (Gilman 221). John is a physician, he wants her to take a complete rest and doesn’t want her to work until she is completely recovered again. In addition, John, also doesn’t let her write as he thinks if she starts writing, she will overthink which leads her to negativity and hurt herself (Gilman 221). He doesn’t want her to hurt herself so doesn’t let her write. This proves that John loves his wife, but it would have been much better if he would have trusted her and let her do whatever she likes to do.
