Frontpage vs. Dreamweaver

In the world of web design there are many different programs that people use. The two most common, and most controversial, are Microsoft Frontpage (FP) and Macromedia Dreamweaver(DW). In this report we will be discussing the pros and cons of each, comparing the two in detail, and resolving the issue of which is better.

Frontpage, in contrast, started out as Microsoft Word for the Web. It was geared toward business people, writers, and editors, and it was and still is an ideal tool for pages that consist primarily of text with the occasional table or picture. Both products have matured quite a bit over the years, but it is still fair to say that DW is primarily a tool for Web designers and FP is an application for content creators. To put it another way, if your first computer application was Photoshop, DW is likely right for you; if you were a Word power user before the Web came along, you'll love Frontpage.

In Reality there is actually no "better" choice, it all comes down to the user, not the program. Frontpage has less of a learning curve than Dreamweaver but, it all depends on what type of programs you are used to working with. As it has been mentioned above, if you are an Microsoft Office user, then FP will be more familiar than Dreamweaver. If you are a Macintosh user, and utilize Macromedia products, then Dreamweaver is going to be more familiar.

There are many similar aspects in both Dreamweaver and Frontpage including the way you can design your page. When designing, in either program, you can choose to type HTML code to create your page. You can also choose the design function to design it by seeing it as you go. You can also do both at the same time, this is called split mode, you can type your HTML and or design at the same time.

Another option when deciding on a program, or anything in life, is the cost. Dreamweaver is quite a bit more expensive than Frontpage, but I guess you get what you pay for. Although, If you are not an experienced web designer then I would recommend FP, for ease of use and reasonable price. Dreamweaver runs at around four-hundred dollars US, where as FP is only about two-hundred US.

When choosing programs/software you need to take into consideration the compatibility.
