Teachers should not only teach their students the subject; but also the direction to the right way of living. It is the teacher’s duty to mentor, motivate, and inspire all of their students. Teachers shall teach and teachers shall have passion towards their job. If there is no passion; do not expect anything other than drab eyes wandering around the classroom. Mr. Brad Cohen is all the above, and even teachers can learn a couple new lessons from him. Brad Cohen, with his aspiring work, “Front of The Class”, battles employment discrimination on disability. Employment discrimination takes off the masks of good nature and in place, put-on masks of acidic opinion. Cohen gets deep judgement, to this day, about being himself. “You can’t judge a …show more content…
Brad Cohen gets judged everywhere he goes and he isn’t always so tough with the situation. ”Everyone, regardless of ability or disability, has strengths and weaknesses. Know what you are. Build on your strengths and find a way around your weaknesses” (Cohen 23). At first, Brad focuses on his strengths. Then, as each interview comes and goes, his strengths turn into the focus of his weaknesses. Brad gets finished with his last interview of the day and he gets in his car. He starts letting tears down freely and getting in a rampage with himself. Brad starts to blame himself and loathing the thought of his disability makes everyone look at him differently. Cohen starts to notice that he has been on a boat in the middle of isolation and all along no one ever saw him as a person, the only thing they saw when they looked at him was his Tourette’s. The only true person that cared was his mother. Brad finally realized that he should not back down and he owes it to everyone with disabilities and to himself to become a teacher he never …show more content…
“A positive outlook breeds success, just as a negative outlook breeds failure” (Cohen 152). As Brad was moping around; he didn’t get nothing good done and nowhere near his goal. Negative outlooks started a blizzard within his thoughts. But as he built up his strengths, he also built up his positive attitude. Soon, he realizes that the way a person looks at a situation, that that’s the way the snow boots will be tied. As Mr. Cohen develops a positive mindset on his situation, he himself, puts on a mask of illustration to the world, and most importantly, to the students of the
If you keep being positive, positive things will happen. The narrator here uses a logical point of view to show he learned something in a situation where it seems like he only
While differentiating instruction and being able to design lessons geared towards the needs of diverse learners are currently highly prized skills for teachers, this has not always been the case. The history of education in the United States is a history of segregation. Even today, schools and curriculum are designed to meet the needs of a core group of students, which does not include students with disabilities (Hitchcock, Meyer, Rose, & Jackson, 2002). In the past, learners who were different, out of the mainstream, or did not fit into the mold to which teachers taught (were not part of the core) learned how or lost out on learning. This is not to say that teachers of the past did not care about their students, about being effective teachers, or about student learning. However, as schools are mirrors reflecting mainstream societal norms (Chartock, 2010; Delpit, 2006)—and, given that our society has not always valued diversity in people, be it due to disability, class, culture, or race—teachers in the past have largely focused their efforts where they could earn the largest return on their investment: the average student .
Ever hear one say, “Sometimes I’m busy making others happy, that I forget to make sure I’m okay.”? After reading Barbara Ehrenreich’s Bright-Sided I have learned that balancing both positive and negative thinking is the single most important life lesson shown throughout the book. Ehrenreich tells readers that the power of positive thinking Is undermining America and how being too positive and too optimistic, can lead to trouble. One that knows how to balance the amount of positivity and negativity will create a proper outcome for their future.
This shows that positive thinking can get in the way of all your hopes and dreams. You may have an image of a life that seems perfect, but you need to be able to separate that from reality and not get the two mixed. It sometimes blinds you from the true reality. Also in the same text, it stated ‘’the pressure of positive thinking can result in suppressing any pessimistic thoughts or unpleasant emotions because they might attract bad things. You deprive yourself of access to the complete picture and the full range of emotions.
Success and failure seem to be pretty distinct opposites, but many times the differences between success and failure aren’t as obvious as we may think them to be. Sometimes a failure can be turned into a success if you are willing to look back at them, and are open to learning from them. Many times, one’s attitude toward a failure can determine whether or not anything is learned from it. Those who remain upbeat and positive after a failure may be able to get something out of it, but those who just don’t think about it and ignore it won’t get anything from it.
Barbara Ehrenreich is the author of the speech “Smile or Die,” she uses this speech to inform her listeners about the ideology of mandatory positive thinking and how it is not always the answer. Ehrenreich talks about what people are forced to learn and how they are forced to think: if they want something bad enough, no matter what that thing may be, that wishing for it and having a positive attitude will put it in their possession. Wanting something bad enough is all it supposedly takes, yet Ehrenreich has an opposite perspective and she educates her audience on her opinion of “thinking positively” using her own personal experiences such as cancer, background knowledge and real-life examples. She wants people to understand that being positive
Discrimination in the workplace can occur more frequently than many expect in this advanced society. The history of job discrimination in general is vast and covers many different areas. In America, the history of discrimination in the area of employment options is a sobering one that reaches far beneath the surface of what many want to know about our seemingly “fair” society.
For generations teachers have been developing our future through harmony, wisdom, and intellectual adventure. A teachers' role in society is to help our youth grow and further their understandings in the principles of life. The expository essay The Role of the Teacher by Irving Layton provides a different perspective on education in the 21st century. Similar to Layton, I firmly believe that education is for the expansion of the young mind and nothing should restrict a student's ability to do so. Layton touches on a view where teachers need to be passionate about their jobs, however, teachers are not always responsible for every action the school makes, but the responsibility may lie in the hands of the school board. Layton also displays his concern for the decreasing rate of young readers and the use of humanities and how that will affect society. Personally I have been influenced by teachers in my own family. There have also been other teachers who have influenced me like I have also had other educators such as in my math course where the diversity in the techniques and skills used affected my overall experience.
Discrimination can be commonly found in social environments, but it is not only limited to just that. Cases of discrimination can also be found, and is more common than it should be, in employment situations. An employee can be discriminated against due to a variety of reasons by another employee, or sometimes a manager or supervisor, both of which are absolutely unacceptable and unprofessional from both a civil rights and a business standpoint. To protect workers’ rights, laws have been passed and enacted for the past fifty years to attempt to abolish discrimination in one of the more necessary areas of an individual’s life, the workplace. Title VII of the 1964 Civil Rights Act is seen as the most important law in combating employment discrimination
I feel the areas that I have touched in this paper along with my personal philosophy statement, reflect my views and opinions as a future educator. I have spoke about areas that are of importance to me, and ideas that I feel will make a difference in someone’s life. As a teacher, I truly want to make a difference and teach students the importance of an education, and the opportunities that are available to them. Education can take people places and I feel more people need to come to this realization.
”(2). He brings up a great example of how discrimination is being applied. People know that discrimination isn’t illegal, but it doesn’t mean it should be done. Instead of big companies using discrimination as part of hiring an employee they should follow through the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission to be fairly equal to those applying for a job. This being said, discrimination shouldn’t be an encouragement because it will lead to negative
The students in our classrooms, both special education and general education classrooms, require individualized education to reach their full potential. Each child’s potential is different just as each child’s road to reach it is different. Our job as teachers is to be there for the student’s to help them reach their potential through their own unique way.
I believe educators are one of the most important careers out there, without them where would we be today? Would you be reading this paper? Would you still be able to read, write, or have an educated conversation? Would you know how to pay for things at the grocery store, and know if you’re receiving the correct change back? Would you know how to tell time, so you can manage your day? When I look back to my young developing stages in life, I always ask myself where would I be today if it wasn’t for my teachers? Teachers are the ones who are building our future generations. Preparing children and teens for higher education. Also playing a huge part in shaping children’s lives, enlightening them, and educating them about society and the world around them; the types of things that a parent doesn’t have time for, or just lacks the knowledge of. I think teachers are what help make this world go round. We simply go to school to learn, and get educated, so that someday we can get a job, or start a business to supply for our families and our self. How would we acq...
As I ponder over my personal professional development experiences as an educator the realization of how one has developed over time is personally satisfying. Educating children especially children with special needs is a challenge within its self. As a teacher it is important that this writer makes a positive influence with students. There are going to be certain ideas that one tries to uphold and other discriminations that one will not allow. Everyone has their own beliefs teachers should do what is necessary not to infringe on others, but show children different way to think so that they have all the information needed to make educated choices. Children are open-minded they have not yet had to deal with or understand the injustices that they will encounter. If children are taught from an early age they will have the ability to succeed especially children with special needs as an educator my main goal is teaching the purpose of public schools, and education reform. It is my purpose to influence children and be positive influence.
Work plays an important role in our daily life, it is considered much more huge part of our personal life. During our daily work we make many relationships throughout our career history. Sometimes these relationships become lasting, and sometimes employment discrimination might happen. This relationships that we thought it last could be cut off by the devastation of claims of discriminatory treatment. Discrimination in the workforce has been an issue since the first people of workers in United States in the present day and as well in the past. Some employees were subjected to a harsh working conditions, verbal abuse, denial of advancement,, and many other injustices. There was also the fact that certain employees were being treated differently than other employees.
