An Inspector Calls is an unapologetically political morality play which criticises the 1912 capitalist-ruled segregated and unfair society, using the Birling family as a symbol for the upper class aristocrats. Priestley simultaneously used the character of Inspector Goole to act as his social mouthpiece to portray socialism as hope for the future. Granted that in the wake of WW2, the world found itself cleaved between the two opposing ideologies of socialism and capitalism, it is unsurprising that Priestley suggests that humanity is of one body and we are responsible for those around us. In his diabetic play masquerading as a detective mystery play, Priestley uses both Mr Birling and Gerald to show those bourgeois men who refuse to accept any responsibility. Mr Birling is the archetypal capitalist who dehumanised his workers and his first priority is to make money. Also Priestly may have constructed Geral Croft to manipulate the truth to avoid social responsibility Gerald is the one who accused the Inspector of lying about Eva's identity even though he unknowingly verifying it was the same girl "leave after a strike" and "said something about a shop". Priestley might be using Gerald to show his without social responsibility the bourgeois will he living in privilege while the proletariat suffer from their actions. Alternatively Priestley presents Gerald as a victim to the capitalist ideology of 1912 and cant take social responsibility as he would be ostracized from society. This is shown in Act 2 where the audience sees a glimpse of remorse for Eva but resorts back to his capitalist ways until the end; this could be because he has no escape from the aristocracy life he already has as he is surrounded by capitalist bourgeois aristocrats. Priestly presents Gerald as the victim to show we are "one body" and should all take responsibility for our actions and not just the minority that will ostracize him from
