I decided for my project that I would spend the time researching Mount Baker. Mount Baker is located about 30 miles east of Bellingham, Washington. The Cascade Mountain range extends over 140 miles between Seattle, Washington and Vancouver, Canada. Mount Baker is a Stratovolcano, which is also known as a composite volcano, it is also the highest peak in the North Cascades and the fifth highest in the Cascade mountain range (Volcano Hazards Programs). Cities located near Mount Baker include Abbotsford, British Columbia and Bellingham, Washington. The closest stream to the mountain is the Nooksack River which runs near the west side of the mountain. On the southwest side of the mountain is Baker Lake. I chose this area because it is a very popular tourist attraction, which before this assignment I had never visited. This spot is a very popular hiking and camping spot and a popular skiing resort during the winters. Mount Baker plays a major role in recreational activities in the Pacific Northwest. Mount Baker is also a place to find amazing geological features. You will see later in the pictures of Mount Baker that I took that it is truly amazing.
Geologic Setting
Mount Baker is known for its beautiful sights and interesting geologic features. Baker is the third tallest mountain in Washington State and one of the five active volcanoes located within the state (USGS), I chose to study Mount Baker because when get up to the mountain the landscape that surrounds the mountain is amazing. If you go on the right day when the sun is out and the sky is clear you wont believe what you will find. The mountain has a variety of different rocks, waterfalls, rives and streams, ice caves and so much more.

Kamiak Butte is one of the few areas near Pullman that reflect the many geologic terms learned in class. This area is an example of an area that is extinct to the surrounding landforms. This butte is located in Whitman County, in between the cities of Colfax and Pullman, Washington. With an elevation of 3, 641 feet above sea level, Kamiak Butte has one of the highest elevations in all of Whitman County (1). The county park covers about 298 acres, and consists mainly of woodlands. Once one has climbed to the top of the butte, the sights become endless and breathe taking. To the north is Steptoe Butte, and southeast is Paradise Ridge and Moscow Mountain. Surrounding the top is endless views of loess dunes, and Blue Mountains that can be seen far into, to the southeast. The breath taking views, and short ten-minute drive from the Washington State University campus, make for Kamiak Butte being one of the most visited hikes in Whitman county (3). The hike offers the option for both those wanting to take a leisurely walk through nature, or a more rigorous adventure. The first hiking trail, that only consists of one mile, opens into a 3.5-mile trail that leads to the ridge of Kamiak Butte.
First, one must know a little information about this volcano. Mount Shasta is located in Siskiyou County, California. This volcano is the second highest peak in the southern end of the Cascade Range and is still active, though not enough for people to notice. At 14,179 feet it is also the most voluminous stratovolcano located in the Cascade Volcanic Arc. The mountains complex shape is due to the four overlapping volcanic cones it consists of, including the most prominent, main summit, Shastina. The other cones include: Sargents Ridge cone, Misery Hill cone, and Hotlum cone. Sargents Ridge cone is the oldest of all the cones that make up the mountain. Though it is now dissected by a glacial valley, a portion of it can still be seen on the mountain. Misery Hill makes up a large part of the present mountain. the fourth cone, the Hotlum cone is formed from eruptive products and is located on the northeastern side of Mount Shasta. Three of the four major vents on the mountain are aligned with a north trending zone that passes through the mountains summit. After a great night of sleep we headed out to the world renown mountain of Jackson Hole. It is known for being the steepest mountain on which a ski resort is set up. It is also know for having a great view of Grand Teton, one of the highest peaks in the Rocky Mountains. We could not have asked for a better day of riding. there was a fresh 14” of snow under our boards and after a little bit of exploring we found some great out of bounds and woods riding.

Located in Mount Vernon, Washington, Cascade Ridge offers a host of recreational and leisure activities for its residents. Geographically similar to Holland and other nearby parts of Europe, millions of tulips are grown in the Skagit Valley annually. Nestled along the Skagit River near Skagit Bay, Cascade Ridge boasts a temperate climate with easy access to Seattle as well as attractions on Fidalgo and Camano Islands.
Mount Mazama was a stratovolcano in Klamath County, Oregon, until it destroyed itself. A stratovolcano is a volcano that has many layers. These layers are made of things such as pumice and hardened lava. The volcano was also a part of the Cascade Mountain Range. It is said that Mount Mazama started forming 420,000 years ago. The volcano started erupting more frequently and more violently 400,000 years ago, and stayed active for 70,000 years. Then one day 7,700 years ago, Mount Mazama had a huge eruption that ended by the whole mountain collapsing into itself and forming the basin of Crater Lake, which is 6.02 miles wide.

Dante’s Peak is appeared to be a composite volcano, although it had some characteristics of cinder and shield volcanoes. I know Dante’s Peak is composite because there were eruptions followed with lava flowing with a low viscosity. Composite volcanos have a cone shape and are formed by tectonic plate boundaries. Yes, composite volcanoes can be found in the Cascades. I know this because the Cascade Mountains consist of many active volcanoes that were developed above a subduction zone that goes from northern California to southern British Columbia.
