Another way he peeks your interest, is when Rainsford comments on how hunting is the best sport in the world, and how he does not care how a jaguar feels. "Perhaps the Jaguar does," observed Whitney. "Bah! They have no understanding." "Even so, I rather think they understand one thing--fear. The fear of pain and the fear of death." This foreshadow shows, the fact that Rainsford is going to be the hunted soon, not the hunter. He is about to find out exactly how the jaguar feels, and this experience will change his view of hunting forever.
In the short story "Cornet at night" by Sinclair Ross foreshadowing plays a very important role in the piece of literature. In a land already rocked by its internal strife, such a sight in the still darkened sky would send shockwaves of fear and panic throughout the small community. Connell and Collins use the elements of foreshadowing, allusion, and irony to create a sense of fear in their writings. An allusion is a reference to a statement, a person, a place or an event. In "The Most Dangerous Game," Richard Connell makes use of allusions frequently. In the very beginning of the story, Whitney says, "I hope the jaguar guns have come from Purdey's" (Connell 19). Purdey’s is a famous manufacturer of shotguns and rifles, and Connell includes it in the story so readers will come to understand that Whitney and Rainsford are fervent hunters. Furthermore, General Zaroff labels Ivan as a "Cossack”; Cossacks were known for their remarkable battle-skills. Thus, Zaroff shows Ivan as a fierce hunter whom Rainsford should fear. Also, as Rainsford hurries through the forest trying to comprise a plan to baffle General Zaroff, Zaroff sits in his home humming a tune from Madame Butterfly-a famous opera by Puccini. Then, right before he is about to go to bed, he reads "from the works of Marcus Aurelius”, a Roman emperor. For instance, foreshadowing takes place when, after shooting the doe, Andy runs away and “Charlie Spoon and Mac and her father crying Andy, Andy (but that wasn't her name, she would no longer be called that);” (338) this truthfully state that she no longer wanted to be called Andy, she wanted to be called Andrea. Finally, Andy realized she is at the stage of growing up so she depicts between the woods where she can be a male or the ocean where she can be a female. To begin with, the setting for “The Most Dangerous Game” is very fitting. The author, Richard Connell, picked the best place to set the story. Reason being, the mansion is on a large island that is feared by everyone. Also the mansion, on the outside at least, looks scary. Since it was dark out and there were cliffs surrounding the house, there was a scary shadow that was cast down. While on the yacht, Sanger Rainsford, the main character or protagonist, came across this island and asked for the name. His friend Whitney replied, “The old charts call it ‘Ship Trap Island’,” (Connell). Ship Trap Island is the name of the island. It doesn’t sound like a happy place to be but it is the dark and violent thoughts and feelings that come with the title, which perfectly fits the theme of the story. Another form of proof, to tell where the story took place is in this quote, “…the blood-warm waters of the Caribbean Sea dosed over his head” (Connell). Death is an inevitable part at the end of human life, despite how many people try to avoid it. Sometimes death is seen as a sacrifice, as noticed in “The Scarlet Ibis” by James Hurst. However, not all sacrifices are deaths, as seen in “The Most Dangerous Game” by Richard Connell. In both stories, upon analysis and comparison, one can see the similarities and differences involving the theme of sacrifice. When the two stories are put side by side, one will see that Connell and Hurst both use death in a way that displays character development. This is shown when Brother of “The Scarlet Ibis” becomes regretful and Rainsford of “The Most Dangerous Game” becomes what he once hated, the reader will also realize how the characters’ personality traits

In the short story, “The Most Dangerous Game” by Richard Connel, the main character Mr. Rainsford gets stranded on an eerie island with a bad reputation. He meets General Zaroff and gets thrown into a huge hunting game, where his life is on the line. In the end, he wins the game and will continue to hunt animals, but not people, as the general once did. He will continue to hunt because one, hunting means everything to him. Two, he will not continue the general’s crazy ways, and resort back to the legal and non-dangerous to other humans sport. Third, he feels powerful when he becomes the hunter and not the hunted. Giving up hunting would be like giving up his life, so just because of a minor block he had to overcome, he will not give up hunting.

Starting from the very beginning, fear was a big theme in “The Most Dangerous Game.” The book opens with a conversation about Ship-Trap island, which the crew is afraid of. Rainsford falls off the boat, and is afraid he won’t make it to an island because he was tired. Soon enough he is lured into a false sense of security once he meets General Zaroff. This is soon snapped with the realization that he would be the hunted. The next three days Rainsford is on the run, setting traps and having to outsmart Zaroff on multiple occasions. The fear mentally and physically affected him. Physically, the fear allowed him to keep running away, surviving the hunt.
