Ouachita Baptist University is not the traditional Liberal Arts University, however the school embraces the liberal arts tradition. As a Christian school Ouachita also focuses on spiritual growth as it says in the mission statement, “Embracing the liberal arts tradition, the university prepares individuals for ongoing intellectual and spiritual growth, lives of meaningful work, and reasoned engagement with the world.” By having us take Chapel and other religious courses as part of the core it helps us as Christians grow. Also as Ostrander states, “A Christian University seeks to provide an overarching framework that gives a sense of purpose and unity for everything from English literature to chapel to intramural soccer.” Through OBU students gain a well-rounded education taking not only classes for their majors but also classes in most subjects. In today’s society this is what Dr. Kagan thinks, “I suggest, should include a common core of studies for all its students. That would have many advantages, for it would create an intellectual communion among students and teachers that does not now exist and would encourage the idea that learning and knowledge are good things in themselves” (Donald Kagan). Although we have one degree we gain knowledge outside of that and it will help us out later in life. An education that involves Liberal Arts is valuable because you get a little bit of everything. I personally believe it makes you a well-rounded person. You could be an expert on one thing and that’s great but while at OBU there are chances to not only strive in one specific field, you get a little bit of everything. Other schools don’t make you go to chapel, take religious classes, or even classes outside your major. That should give me some motivation along with me needing to make good grades, because after I graduate I get to have my dream job, and that’s the goal. My third fear is more complicated than the other two for this one its not just about school its also about life, and in life we make mistakes and aren’t good enough sometimes. That is something I need to realize, and I also need to try my best at everything that I do. This will probably be my hardest fear to concur but will be the most beneficial to me upon complication. While at OBU I plan to have a blast but I also plan to get an education that will last a lifetime. By concurring my fears and getting the most out of my core classes I will learn more than just what my degree is in. I will gain an education that I will value for the rest of my life.
One idea that I disagree with is the idea that colleges themselves have sold their soul. William Deresiewicz tells us that it is neoliberalism and the way it impacted society pressure students to major in fields that typically provide more money. Such as business or STEM fields. In my opinion, the role of a college is to provide a higher education for those who want to pursue a certain career. Just because students prefer STEM and business fields doesn’t mean that colleges have sold their soul to the market. Many students want to major in STEM and business fields so colleges provide more classes to accommodate them. That doesn’t mean colleges have given up on liberal arts. This affects me as a person because facing my fear and overcoming it is really hard to me because I usually don’t face my fear in person because I usually face my fear in dreams and I don’t like seeing it. I remember in the past when I got so mad and almost got into a rage mode which made me feel really bad in the inside. My sister got me really mad by doing something I told her not to do, but instead of myself getting really mad, I was able to handle my anger and not get really mad. I got really happy because I was able to overcome my fear of not getting really mad and not feeling really bad in the inside. A future fear is me not doing good in school or other sport activities. To me this is a big fear because when I do bad in swimming and school then I get in trouble by my parents but if I do good in swimming and school then my parents get proud of me. If I do good in swimming and school then it means I am overcoming my fear of my parents getting mad at
With the advent of the internet, technical schools, and computers in general, jobs today are more specialized than ever before, and they will continue to increase in particularity, thus a purely liberal arts curriculum is very untimely. Most people take four years to attain a bachelor’s degree of some kind and if they want a salary increase it requires at least two more years of graduate school before they can even think about entering the workplace. If people study only humanities for six of their most pivotal years of life, depending on their field of work, they may have a very small base of technical knowledge to utilize.
Why do college students need courses in the liberal arts? Is it beneficial or just a waste of time? Will it make them or influence them to become better workers once they graduate or will it just go down the drain and be useless? Student loans are increasing every year, and each student just wants to finish their degrees at a lesser price and a quicker pace, so they can start working and pay for those debts. In today’s society where some to most students are very much career – driven, they decide to specialize early on their degrees which means taking all the classes that are required in their respective majors. Students are only required to take minimal courses or subjects in the liberal arts such as humanities, philosophy, communication, etc. Also, students are more keen to focus on what they think or believe can offer high salary base pays professions especially in this current state of our economy. Even though students specialize early in the degree that they have chosen has its advantages, college students would benefit more if they are required to take core classes in the liberal arts to develop not only a well – rounded education but also prepare them for the real world. By taking subjects in the liberal arts along with their field of specialty, students will develop strong critical thinking skills that will be beneficial in problem solving once they have a job. They will also have competent oral and written communication skills that are necessary in any organization, and their creativity and innovation will be enhanced.
I believe that I will be academically successful at Ohio State because I have taken the time to realize what my career goals are. When I graduated from high school in 1996, I really had no idea what career path I wanted to pursue. So I listened to a lot of wise people who pointed out the things that I was good at. I entered Ohio University as an Engineering major and later switched to Industrial Technology. After many years in college I found I was not successful at the things I had previously been successful at. I realized that what I was studying really did not interest me. I actually didn’t like it at all. That was the point that I decided I had wasted enough time and money and I walked away from college.
My philosophy of higher education is that thus far we have realized that the gift of sharing knowledge is one of the keys to success in our society. We have learned from so many great philosophers, scientist, and researchers that have fueled our knowledge in a vast variety subjects. The importance of passing on this knowledge and improving our society has shown to be important in human survival and our growth in the years to come. As the years pass and technology is getting more advanced, the need for higher education is steadily rising. In the past years, a bachelor’s degree was viewed as one of the greatest accomplishments of that time. Now in today’s standards, only having a bachelors degree will not suffice. Thus proving that higher education is the pillars for growth in humanity. Similar to my philosophy, I believe my Christian experience relates to my views of higher education. For instance, as Christians, we have learned that the keys to success is reading and learning from the Bible. Just as we have learned from past philosophers, the Bible provides Christians with knowledge to continue to walk in the path that God has paved for us to go to heaven. In addition, talking and communicating with God helps us in times of need. He is our teacher and supervisor providing us useful knowledge to succeed. From that guidance, it is our job to pass that knowledge to other Christians to grow in our faith. In both higher education and Christianity, our job is to pass our knowledge and faith to others to maintain and improve human survival for years to come. I will definitely enjoy the independence of campus life. The camaraderie, which will develop, should only add to the college experience. The courses will be challenging but I am willing to do what it takes to achieve my ultimate goal, which was alluded to earlier. The untapped potential is there. I would like to be given the opportunity to show what I can accomplish.
A college education gives a person the opportunity to be successful in life, either financially or morally dependent on the goals that they set for their life. They will choose a college that offer programs for the major of their choice, where they will specialize and receive a degree. The decision to pursue a higher education will give the opportunity to earn a better income over someone who does not have a degree. College is more of life preparation course that will help make sure a successful career. If a person pursues a career in engineering, physics or mathematics their curriculum would include more liberal art preparation courses, in order for them to earn their degree, so someone pursuing a degree in these types of careers are attending college for job preparation. On December 10, 2009 at Hamilton University in Clinton, New York, college professors debated current college curriculum (Liew). They talked about how their college could make a leap from being good to being great. At the 22nd American Mathematical Association of Two-Year Colleges conference held in Long Beach California on November 14, 1996 the topic of changing curriculum was discussed (“Mich”). The University of Louisiana, Lafayette, is eliminating its philosophy major, while Michigan State University is doing away with American studies and classics, after years of decline in enrollments in those majors (Zernike). The purpose of a college education is to meet the student's liberal art’s needs so that they can compete and understand the connection between a degree and a job that will enable them to compete with other world economies, give them a well-rounded education that will enable them to earn a higher income, and retain a lifetime full of knowledge.
Centuries ago during the Renaissance especially, learning the liberal arts were extremely important and deeply rooted in the education system. St. Kate’s requires its students to take courses in that are in the “humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, and formal sciences” departments in order to receive a degree. My TRW class allowed me to be given the feel of English, Theology, History, and Theater classes and expand my knowledge of the four. If a college were to only have students take the courses needed for their desired major, they would miss the opportunities to broaden their horizons. People learn new things every day whether they are conscious of it or not, which begs the question “what constitutes an education?” Higher education, for example, typically consists of being affiliated with some institution such as a university, or a lone college. Such educations may also follow the liberal arts methodology, depending on the values of the institution that is being attended. The purpose of a liberal education is to provide exposure to multiple topics. This general education is commonly referred to as “the core curriculum” because all students no matter their intended major are required to complete the courses in order to graduate. Having course requirements is especially beneficial to an undecided major. It creates an opportunity for the student to get a taste of many different concentrations and decide in which department he or she may excel. General education courses are influential to students that have an intended major. Some people already know by the age of seven that they want to become a pilot or nurse; others, however, have more difficulties deciding what to do with their future. People who decided to go to a university or college have to make an important choice: what major are they going into? For many people this is a very difficult question. As the statistics show, one out of five students change their major between admission and the first day of classes. Nearly three out of four students change majors at least twice before they graduate. And three out of four college students express uncertainly about their major. These striking results raised some questions for me. Is it really necessary to choose a major? What influence has the choice of a specific major on the student and his or her education? What are the opportunities for the future? And how can these students be helped? Since I am still having trouble choosing a major myself, I decided to do some research on this topic and I hope it will help you a little bit to make the right choice.
Although money isn’t everything, being financially secure is very important. Money can’t buy love or happiness, but it makes life easier knowing you have a house to go home to, food in your fridge, and clothes to put on your back. My family had a hard time when I was growing up with making ends meet and I want to make sure that I do everything in my power to keep that from happening to my future family. If I apply myself in college and strive for knowledge, I will have the potential to become very adept in my field which will help me achieve my goal of financial stability because I’ll be able to keep a job. I also hope for my future that I stay open to new experiences, whatever the world may throw at me. I want to be able to travel and see new cultures, societies, and people. Hand-in-hand with traveling, I would love to volunteer all over the world, as well. I take great pride in doing volunteer work and it would be an enlightening experience to be able to help out around the world. Something else I am passionate about is music. I hope that I have the time and ability to continue on with my music career as my life progresses. Doing bands and music things at UWEC will help me to achieve this goal because I will learn immensely under great instruction. Going to UW Eau Claire will aid me in reaching all of these goals I have set myself. I am excited to see what my future holds for me
But if going to this school does not benefit the student from going into their planned major, why go to this school? Going to the right school allows students to be able to meet their degree requirements earlier in their college careers. With this, students may find themselves obtaining two college majors, a minor or a certificate that may help them later in their careers. This can also open up more opportunities for the students to explore a variety of other courses
Attending Ohio University and obtaining my masters degree is a major goal and perhaps one of this largest and most challenging goals I want to overcome. I am destined for greatness and Ohio University will certainaly put me on the right path to that destiny. I know Ohio University will expand my knowledge tremendously and challenge me to take new hights Id never thought I would reach! My goals are high because I know I am blessed with the clarity to reach my career goals.
