In this essay I am going to compare the characters Montresor, and Fortunato from the story called ‘The Cask of Amontillado. By Edgar Allan Poe, both of these two are complex characters, I chose these two characters because they have some similarities in common and I like both of them, especially Montresor. Montresor and Fortunado are both really prideful guys that both are going to do whatever it takes to keep their reputation and honor. Montresor shows how hurt his pride id from the beginning of the story when he says that he had “borne a thousand injuries" from Fortunado, and that he would, as a result of insult, "punish with impunity" to defend his honor. Then Montressor starts his evil plan of revenge by doing everything to get rid of the insulting Fortunado. Montresor also shows pride in himself when he brags about how his family name has been around for ages, and how they are "a great and numerous family." The author Edgar Allen Poe shows his crazy character by by making him wear a jester's hat, and by making him little drunk. In my Mind It is kind of hard to believe that a character like Fortunado with bad intention had malevolent insulted Montresor. To me Fortunato seems to me like a chill guy but yet again, Fortunato had insulted Montresor by telling him he had almost forgotten about his family heritage and there is was no possibility of montressor being in the Freemason society. Montresor is sadistic, deceptive, cunning, manipulative and vengeful. Fortunato baiscally Makes up this whole scene, He plans everything out, He smartly lures Fortunado on and on because has the drive and has the audacity to kill him. Fortunato is definetly much more dangerous and harmful than the less harmful
