Modesty in fashion
Across the globe, women experience modesty in different ways. Modesty means different to different women all over the world. For some modesty isn’t judged by clothes while for other modesty is primarily related to the way they dress their
Fakhraie launches her essay by explaining how Muslim women struggle every day because of what they wear. In her essay, she talks about a teenage girl that was killed by her father because she refused to wear her hijab. Also, many women that wear a hijab are being banned from sporting events in the United States. A hijab is a “traditional Muslim garment” (Fakhraie 461) that several Muslim women wear every
Furthermore, Haydar expresses that she has been able to embrace the modesty in veiling and that it allows her to be seen as a whole person. She addresses the fact that “many Americans see veiling as an oppressive tool forced on Muslim women by the men in our culture” (414). Yet, Haydar informs the readers that veiling isn’t specific to the Islam culture and is also a choice for many women. She even points out that many other religions promote and advocate for modesty in
In her textbook Visibly Muslim, Emma Tarlo outlines how Muslim clothing and fashion in the urban setting of Britain can affect the visibility of ethnicity. According to the 2001 census, there are over 1.6 million Muslims living in Britain. This population consists of individuals from many different backgrounds and descents, and all have their own distinct cultural dress and fashion. The most recognized and popular item among Muslim women is ‘hijab’, which has brought about much debate because of its conservative covering. Hijab is a scarf worn over the head and neck but does not fully cover the face and eyes. There are no set guidelines which inform the way in which Muslim women dress. Instead, Muslim fashion is influenced by factors such as geographic region, heritage and religion. Muslim women’s dress is outlined in the sacred Islamic text, the Qur’an. The covered clothing and headscarf, worn by Muslim women, is a public statement to show modesty, respect for Islam, spirituality, devotedness and identity as a Muslim. This essay explores the different Muslim and non-Muslim perspectives in relation to Tarlo’s Visibly Muslim, and discusses the impacts of being ethnically identifiable (Tarlo, 2010).
Within the Middle East, the largest population of the men and women are Muslim. The Muslim religion suggests that the women wear a veil or hijab, which is a headscarf that only exposes a woman’s eyes, accompanied by a burqa which is a full body cloak. The sole purpose of the clothing is to cover a woman’s feminine features from men’s eyes. The Qur’an, an Islamic scripture supports, and slightly obligates the uniform by saying that women are to be conservative, “Let them wear their head covering over their bosoms, and not display their ornaments.” (Qur’an). Muslim women, instead of feeling oppressed, view this as a positive aspect in their lives, influenced by their devotion to Allah. Their acceptance could be influenced by their geographical location. However, when Muslim women are withdrawn from the Middle East, and are placed within other countries such as France, they become a minority group, “a tenth of the population is Muslim” (France has the largest number of Muslim inhabitants in Western Europe) to be exact, and they attract attention because of their uncommon customs.
Once a girl has her first menstrual cycle she is not considered a child anymore and is required to cover her face in the presents of men outside of her family. There are many types of veiling used in the Middle-East. Depending on the religious beliefs of the woman’s family or the laws of the country that she resides in, will determine what type of covering or veiling a woman will wear. Whether it is a hijab (also called a shaylah or a tarhah) that is a scarf like fabric that covers the hair and neck, warn with whatever modest outfit she chooses; or a nigab (also known as a burqa) that covers every part of the woman, which can also include the eyes. With the burqa she is allowed to wear anything she would like. Many woman wear western style clothing underneath their burqas. Veiling is said to be form protection from gender interaction and is also a showing of modesty for women.
The hijab, while not always popular, has seem to be customary for most women to wear in the Islam world for good or for bad. Prior to the 21st century the hijab was not very popular and was looked as a rarity, but now most women adopted this clothing choice for a multitude of reasons. Many women choose to wear it because they feel god instructed women to wear it, to highlight modesty, to show faith in god, or to show Muslim identity. There are many reasons women wear the hijab, even if the veil is forced upon them because of family members; However, the sight of the veil concerns many women activists whose main priority is to insure equality for all women. Many women activists don’t like the veil to be forced upon women and the idea
As for Muslim women, they wear a headscarf known as the hijab. Hijab is a veil that covers the head and chest. Most Muslim women at the age of puberty, wear the hijab in the presence of adult males outside of their immediate family. Most women wear abayas. Abayas are long/loose dresses. The purpose to why they dress the way they do is,hence they want to protect themselves from harm and to keep their lovely beauty for their husband. This is worn in public, yet still they can dress however they wish in their place of residency.Abayas are very similar to the graduation gowns worn when high schoolers graduate and when judges in courts judge .If successful mortals wear them ,therefore it is a sign of greatness and achievement. Some citizens find that wearing religious garments in public should not be permissible, hence it would be as if they said a human being graduating shouldn't be permissible to wear the
Clothing is perhaps the simplest form of expression used by people to differentiate themselves from other members of society at both the collective and individual level. Clothing has the ability to simultaneously delineate an individual’s identifying attributes such as gender, profession, religion and ethnicity. Likewise, religious symbols entail wearing particular garments, amongst many other articles, and individuals choosing to wear it to overtly demarcate their religion and faith. Many traditions have distinctive religious symbols, such as Sikhs wearing the turban and Catholic nuns wearing the black veil. In Islam, there are several religious symbols such as the hijab, the burqa and the niqab intended to be worn by Muslim women. In recent
I was inspired mostly by the screening of Fashioning Faith to write about Islamic women. The film was documentary about how American Muslim women view fashion. There were several young Muslim women who explained where and how faith and fashion meet. They discussed some things including: “the veil”, Muslim fashion vs. secular fashion, a...
The United States of America is a very unique country because of how many different types of people there are in this beautiful country. From left to right, just different types of cultures and ethnicities. That’s what makes the United States of America so great, it is different from other countries, other countries have the same type of people or people with the same religion, but in the United States of America, that’s not the case. Some people in the United States of America are not grateful for this amazing gift, some Americans don’t like this and are racist, which is always wrong. We shouldn’t have racism anymore because that period is long gone and over.
Have you ever had a weird moment in life, with your friends or family, well in “CJ Aboody's” The Walk we see tons of these relatable moments he shows us and uses imagery, metaphors, rhyme, and tone to tell a very relatable story. This story is being told when he just turned 12, he was walking with his family on a trail at night, then something felt wrong, something felt like there were no people in sight, something was watching them, but it was not what it seemed. When we look at the poem we see that the main idea is that not everything is trying to get you in life, we can see this in the poem in the third stanza, we see that it is described as a beast with dark fur and decent sized teeth, this leads the readers to believe it is something big

In the Islamic faith, Muslim women are required to dress modestly by God. In the Qur’an, God speaks directly to all Muslim women and says “...guard their private parts and not expose their adornment except that which [necessarily] appears thereof and to wrap [a portion of] their headcovers over their chests and not expose their adornment (The Qur’an 24:31)”. Muslim women have to wear a hijab, or a head covering, when they are in public places and when they are around men who are not close relatives. In fact, countries like Saudi Arabia and Qatar have a mandatory dress code enforced. Muslim women in these countries have to wear a hijab and an abaya, or a full-length, loose fitting garment on top of their clothes. Although God requires Muslim women to dress modestly and Saudi Arabia and Qatar have a dress code, it is entirely their choice on what they would like to wear.
