In the story “Mission of Mercy” by Esther Lipnick, the main character, Florence Nightingale, is a very independent and headstrong woman, who is also very clean. She likes to have things her own way, and is very proper when it comes to cleanliness and discipline. She encourages good behavior and responsibility, as shown in the beginning.

This shows that shes responsible because she cares about cleanliness, and she shows it at the beginning of the story (scene 1-2). She was being responsible and saw to it that it was done. “You’re learning the importance of cleanliness—I’ll never be able to stress that too strongly.” Taking initiative is a hard task, especially for a woman in that time frame (1837). The oppression of women was still happening at that time, even if it was cruel. When you read Mission of Mercy, it’s almost as if it was nonexistent.
