In the short story “A Kind of Courage” by Ruth Sterling, the protagonist, Davy, is trying to win Ginny’s heart. Topic Sentence
In the beginning, Davy’s character trait of determination primarily directs, and he accepts the choice to dive in order to impress Ginny. He also shows intelligence and has positive influences, but these are overshadowed by this immature understanding of courage. Early the next day Davy’s trait of determination still directs, but his intelligence begins to make an impact on his decisions, along with the influence from his father. In the end when Davy prepares to dive, his determination and intelligence struggle for dominance in his decision making, but the positive influences of others and his intelligence leads to a more mature understanding of courage and the decision not to dive. 3 POVs
All in all, Davy’s traits and positive influences lead to him making choices that show more mature understanding of courage and also to winning Ginny’s heart. Thesis statement
In the beginning when Dave interjects and chooses to dive, his trait of determination is the main factor in his choice to dive to impress Ginny. Although he has traces of intelligence and positive influence, he has an immature understanding of courage which overshadows his other traits.

The main component which gives him the immature choice to dive is his determination. This is shown when Davy works at his summer job and feels like an outsider. He has an interest in Ginny, but his rival, Clinton, comments that nobody has dove from the rocks ever since that boy got killed. In the beginning, Davy’s character trait of determination is the primary trait which directs his decision to dive, despite there being minute indications of intelligence and positive influences, leading to an immature understanding of courage. However in the end, Davy’s determination becomes intelligence which directs his choices, and with the positive influences of others, he acquires a more mature understanding of courage and decides not to dive. Davy’s traits and positive influences and lead to choices that show a more mature understanding of courage and to winning Ginny’s heart with his understanding. In life, all of us need to be aware of immature understandings that might lead us to harm. Concluding Paragraph
