As humans, we are easily deceived. We usually tend to want to try to take the path of least resistance and we have to constantly force ourselves not to. I really do like your parking lot example and again it shows the difference in perception. I'm big with fitness and I not only realized that I was taking more time to find a good parking spot than actually just park. According to Thoreau, “After a night’s sleep the news is as indispensable as breakfast…And I am sure that I never read any memorable news in a newspaper.” Because reading or, in the modern era, watching the news has turned into a habit, many people have incorporated it into their daily routine along with eating breakfast. Habits are extremely hard to break. Many people tend to bite their nails when they’re nervous; if they are asked why they do it, they will not even realize that they had been chewing on their nails viciously. It takes time to break a habit, and it is nearly impossible with all the constant reminders surrounding them, particularly when it comes to performing meaningless tasks. Thoreau believes that it is these tasks that end up taking precedence is a person’s life and drain it until there is hardly any time left for things important to the individual.

I know in the back of my mind that I need to eat healthier and exercise more, but I never actually put my thoughts about it into action. I need to keep myself in the right mindset to accomplish my goals of making myself healthier. I often will get distracted and forget all about what I had planned on doing; I need to focus. I think also having someone else there to push me and make sure I keep at the good habits will keep me from straying away. I feel like I have plenty of time to go and exercise or think “Oh, I can eat something healthy during my next meal.” However, the next thing I know, the day is over and I didn’t keep to my word.
