Miriam Schapiro was born in Toronto Canada in 1923 who went by the name of Mimi. Schapiro what is a sculpture painter and printmaker who helped lead the feminist art movements in the 1970s. She inspires generations of artist during that time and now. Miriam Schapiro died on June 20 at 91. Miriam Schapiro was the only child of a Russian Jewish family. Her father was an artist and studying at the Beaux-Arts Institute of Design, in New York. Miriam's mother was a homemaker and she encouraged Miriam to pursue her career in art. By the age of six, Miriam was drawing. Miriam and her parents came to Brooklyn during the great depression, around the same time Miriam started taking art classes, studying from nude models at the Museum of Modern Art. Miriam wrote that the Femmage style was "woman-life context" and it "celebrates a private and public event." Miriam Schapiro was one of the leading artist in the Pattern and Decoration movement because of the launch of the Femmage in the 1980s. Pattern and Decoration or P&D was an art movement between the 1970s and 1980s. A plethora of artist in that time used P&D including Miriam Schapiro. Miriam used P&D in her artwork and the style was seen in her vibrant fabrics. Miriam wanted to express and promote her art through women. Feminist art institute was a place that held workshops and hosted lectures by women in 1978, which was cofound by Miriam. In 1980 8C received an honors award from the Women's Caucus for Art including several awards after that's such as the lifetime achievement award from the Polk Museum of art in 2002. Miriam has worked hard and made her way in an important part of contemporary art. Miriam had many famous artworks but Dollhouse (1972) was the one that really caught my eye.
