Union movement is a general term often used to describe the collective organization of people from a particular trade or collection of trades, with the primary aim of representing workers and agitating for better working conditions and treatment from their employers while also demanding the implementation of labour and employment laws. As much as union movement have evolved over the years to become what it is today, some minority groups are not fully represented within these unions. Therefore, this essay examines how change has been manifested in union movement and about how further change might occur. There are several examples of union movement across the globe with evidence of making impact on workers’s issue. For instance, trade unions in Egypt, Albania, and the trade unions in Germany. The list is endless as union movement has come to stay amongst us. Despite this success attributed to union movement, it has historically been constrained by national borders that have restricted movement of workers. Still, works migrate from one country to another thereby requiring the inclusion of immigrants and invisible minorities. Workers who were employed as porters had their working conditions improved in line with the demands of the union movement, with better wages. In addition, parallel union movement led to the overhauling of job classification system which restricted the prospect of black workers in railroad jobs. This way, union movement was significantly enhanced for minority people.
Lastly, encouraging and supporting workers in filling human rights complaints against employers and any other person within the workplace is a sure bet for minority group to enhance their participation in union movement. There are times when the only and last thing to do is to drag recalcitrant employers before appropriate authorities before they could take step in the right direction. With this strategy, minority group should rally round bold individuals taking this step in order to fully address the problem of low minority group representation in union
