1. Define majority group. Describe specifically how the three victims and their communities represent a minority. According to sociologist Louis Wirth a minority group is a group of people who “because of physical or cultural characteristics, are singled out from the others in the society in which the live for differential and unequal treatment”. But this not necessarily mean that the minority group is the minority on number. In the film the assaulted were Puerto Rican, African and Jewish and according to my definition these three communities are the minority in this country, because this country was formed by white people that in those days was the “majority group”. Nowadays this way of thinking still and the white people use to have privileges. 2. Identify and explain how the terms “prejudice” and “discrimination” have been exhibited on these three cases. Prejudice mean create a concept or a judgment about someone or something in advance. I see this in the film when in case of Anthony Baez the police officer asked to the group of brothers who was playing in the street, who was the leader of the gang, the were a group of brothers no a gang but the police officer judge them like that. In the case of Amadous Diallo who was walking out of his building, the police officers supposedly thought Diablo was a rapist of the area and shot him, Diallo’s mother claims he was shot because he was black. In this both cases the victims were not guilty of anything but the prejudice of the …show more content…
Based on what you have learned from the film ( and what happened with popular cases today), what do you think can be done to control police racial biases against minority groups? The cases of police racial biases are problems even nowadays. I believe that the police department should create stronger sanctions and not to protect the police who do wrong. They have to prosecute them on the charge of racism, and mark them as the do with the rapists, but in their case mark them as
These minorities are considered to be outside of the social contract that Vine Deloria discusses in the article “Minorities and the Social Contract.” Vine Deloria’s argument about the injustices
Reading Chapter four of Ethnic Studies Issues and Approaches, by Philip Q. Yang, one receives a profound understanding of ethnic stratification. First of all, Yang describes ethnic stratification as a “institutionalized ethnic inequality” (61). This definition means the system of ethnic/social rules allowing certain ethnic groups to have access to more wealth and resources, which is unfair to the minority groups. There is a division between majority and minority groups, this is based on who is given more power, wealth and resources not because of a larger number of an ethnicity group. According to Yang, White people are the majority in the United States, but they are called majority for their share of wealth/power unlike the minority group.
During the time of World War II, there was a dramatic change in the society of America and its way of life. Men were needed at war and the women were left at home. People were mistrusted and were falsely accused of something they didn’t do. Some people were even pushed away because they were different. These people were the minorities of America. Some of the minorities it affected the most were the African Americans, women, Japanese Americans, and even young adults. What is a minority? A minority, in this case, is a person or group of people who are discriminated against because there is something about them that makes them different. Some of these reasons why they are different are things like race, gender, and even age. However, the real question is how were the roles of American minorities change after World War II?
Prejudice meaning pre-judging someone and having an unwarranted bias occurs often in today’s society and has been around since the beginning of time. Prejudice can effect people’s decisions and have an unfair impact on society. The text ‘To kill a mocking-bird’ written by Harper Lee and the movie ‘Philadelphia’ directed by Jonathon Demme explore this idea thoroughly.
Minorities are groups distinct compared to the rest of the population whether by politics, ethnic background, and religious practices, or matters alike. Often, minorities in America are described by race or income. People with lower income usually called a minority or people with little knowledge or subsidiary occupation classification. Many rights activists cover most of the concerns of racial discrimination. Moreover, equal rights, whether in the place of employment, access to efficient education or healthcare, or the rights to vote, are all issues of racial discrimination. Throughout time, minorities are primarily affected.
...ely minority, the reality of the situation is that the fight against street gangs is a fight that is played out predominantly in inner-city, minority communities(177).
Connecting back to the idea of Rima and Nitya being considered a minority, each of them have experienced being considered a minority at some point in their life. A minority is defined as “a group in society distinguished from, and less dominant than, the larger and more numerous majority” according to the dictionary and a minority group is defined by Martin M. Merger (Race & Ethnic Relations, Martin N. Marger, 1991) states that “being apart of a group that, on the basis of their physical and or cultural traits.” Growing up in Pakistan, Rima was not a minority and was inevitably a part of the dominant group in Pakistan due to her heritage and ethnicity. Living in London now, Rima is not treated or considered to be a part of the dominant race
Takaki, R. (1999). The myth of the “model minority.” In D. M. Newman (Ed.), Sociology:
There are quite a few different minority groups in today’s society. Minority groups are all unique in there own way. With groups rapidly growing as well as groups decreasing in size minority groups go through change in areas like discrimination, society, and within the criminal justice system. Discrimination, society, and within the criminal justice system are all unique to different minority groups in their own ways, but most of them all have things in common as well.
We will begin with looking at the nation’s largest minority group, which are the Hispanic Americans (Healey, 2012). The Hispanic Americans are divided into many groups. The three largest groups are the Mexican Americans, Puerto Ricans, and Cuban Americans (Healey, 2012) and these are the three that will be focused on.
These groups include all cultures with the exception of Caucasians living in America, such as African-Americans, Hispanics, Muslims and etc.. One example of inequality would be from Melvin Oliver and Thomas Shapiro’s argument about how African-Americans don't have the same opportunities as the whites do when it comes to dealing with finances and borrowing money. Their argument says, “Blacks are rejected for mortgages 60% more often than whites, even when they have the same qualifications and creditworthiness. When blacks to receive mortgages, they are most likely to take “subprime” mortgage loans that charge much higher interest rate” (Giddens, Duneier, Appelbaum and Carr: 198). The statistics lead to a negative misinterpretation of black people in the U.S. when problems like these are dealt with in society. A web article organization states its opinion on a Facebook post that they read, they said: "discovered notable examples of blatant bias, misinterpretations of facts and poorly substantiated claims about particular acts violence” (Donaldson). Groups like African-Americans are always victimized of hate speech, but there are other groups of people who stick up and protect who they are as a
Minority group is a term referring to a category of people differentiated from the social majority. Pre ww2 and during Europe was diverse in minority groups. The minority groups that consisted in Europe pre ww2 were non-Jewish Soviet people, Jews, Soviet prisoners of war, Non-Jewish Poles, gypsies, disabled people, homosexuals, Jehovah’s Witnesses. According to various reliable sources the total number of national minority populations in Europe was estimated at 105 million people, or 14% of 770 million Europeans. Many of these minority groups were captured and later unfortunately killed in concentration camps. In conclusion Europe was diverse in minority group’s pre and during ww2.
Generally speaking, there are many contradictions towards my claim that minority groups are fundamental to the countries development. At this point, many will probably disagree on the grounds that colleges close doors on the minority students. I know many may think students close doors on themselves. However, all the stereotypes, discrimination attacks, and poor education provided by teachers are factors that lead to reason students do bad in there educational career and as well leads to many school closing there doors for them. Additionally, many employers might want to question whether minority groups unemployment is do to discrimination rather than lack of education or proficiency. Although it is true many minority group workers lack education,
The biggest minority on the planet, there are so many of us, should we even be considered a minority? The mentally ill. Beaten, abused, misused, raped, sodomized, insulted, and more. Sometimes even in the care of mental health professionals. We are people with depression and people with schizophrenia. We are your neighbors...and sometimes the homeless begging for something to eat. We are the elderly and the children. We are everywhere and anyone. NO we aren’t aliens taking over your planet. We are sick, one of our organs is failing to do it’s job properly, it just happens that it’s our brain not our kidneys. Yet we are victimised, stigmatised, and yet at the same time glamourised. We are called childish when we deal with anxiety, bitchy when
A minority or subordinate group can be identified by analyzing five properties: first, experiencing unequal treatment; second, having physical or cultural characteristics that distinguish them from the dominant group; third, involuntary membership in said group; fourth, an awareness of their group's subordinate status which forges a deeper sense of group solidarity; finally, a high rate of in group marriage (Pg. 5) As we are all aware, diversity in the United States and a lack of acceptance allows for the presence of various minority groups, the most common being of racial, ethnic, and religious backgrounds. However, there are other minority groups such as the aged, the disabled, and those of LGBT community (lesbian, gay, bi-sexual, transgender).
