Before I give a clear description of ministry context, I want to plant. Let me first of all trace the birthday of the church and that will give a way forward of answering a question like what is the biblical definition of a local church, which type of the ministry context I want to plant. Jesus said to Peter, “And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it (Matt 16:18).” Yet we see the church coming to exist in Acts 2 on the day of Pentecost. The Bible say’s on the day of Pentecost, the disciples were gathered together in one house waiting for the important event as Jesus has promised and thousands of Jews from all over the world were in Jerusalem for the Feast. The Holy Spirit came upon the believer and they spoke in foreign tongues which enabled other people who were around from various language groups to understand the message of the apostles’ (Acts 2:5-8) believed (Acts 2:41; 4:4), and they were added to the church. After this incident the church spread to other people groups region like Samaritans, where Philip evangelized in Acts 8. In Acts 10 we see that later, God gave Peter a vision that salvation was not limited to a particular group (Acts 10:34-35, 45), so they …show more content…
The members who have true testimony will be baptized as give the chance to be member of this church. As Peter said to them, ““Repent,” and be baptized, each of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit (Acts 2:38).” Jesus also said to his disciples, “Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, (Matt 28:19).” Hence, Baptism is very important for the church and new believer to affirm into the body of
Here one can see the significance of baptism extending far beyond the momentary act that is the baptismal rite. Baptism is an act of birth; it gives an immediate and direct connection with Christ’s resurrection, and it lays the foundation for fellowship, which
On one hand, baptism is a sacrament that any human must have because it is a lifelong process of salvation and it is necessary for eternal salvation. Since Adam’s sin, all human is born spiritually death; therefore a newborn in spirit is necessary, in order for humans to have “spiritual eyes open” It will keep the person closest to God, because “open eyes” helps to discriminate good from bad during the person journey in life. Baptism present two parts, an outward and sensible sign, and an inward and spiritual grace implied, but baptism is not sanctification by itself. Furthermore, baptism is the Church’s external affirmation and proclamation of prevenient grace; it is an initiation and incorporation into Christ Holy church. During baptism church as a whole play an active role; first, by welcoming the new member, then after baptism, the church provides the nurture that makes possible a comprehensive and lifelong process of growing in grace. On the other hand Communion celebration by using bread and wine is a remembrance of Jesus death, and resurrection and the waiting until He comes again. The way in which bread and wine is converting into Jesus’s body and blood is a mystery. When during celebration Jesus says “for you” it connotes expiating and sacrifice meaning to liberates “us” sinners. Participate in communion
In section two Anyabwile highlights the ministry of Bishop Danial Alexander Payne (1811- 1893). Payne was born a free black in Charleston, South Carolina doing the zenith of slavery in this country. As a free black Payne took advantage of his freedom and submerge himself into his studies. After his call into the ministry, Danial Payne was inspired not only to educate himself however to be an educator of colored people. From 1830 to 1835 Danial Payne had one of the fastest growing and most influential schools in the south. (76) Until a law was passed in 1835 prohibiting any person white or black from teaching slaves to read and write. Therefore, Payne closed his school and moved north. Danial Payne not only believed in an educated pastorate
“The apostles and the elders met together to consider this matter. After there had been much debate, Peter stood up and said to them, “My brothers, you know that in the early days God made a choice among you, that I should be the one through whom the Gentiles would hear the message of the good news and become believers. And God, who knows the human heart, testified to them by giving them the Holy Spirit, just as he did to us; and in cleansing their hearts by faith he has made no distinction between them and us. Now therefore why are yo...
“Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptiz- ing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age” ( Matt. 28:19-20 NIV ). The idea of sharing in the death of Christ connects remission of sins with baptism which the death of Christ effected. ( Act 2:38; 1 Pet. 3:21). Just as physical washing cleanses our bodies from filthiness, so also baptism symbolically cleanses our spirits through participation in the death of Christ. “For we were all baptized by one Spirit so as to form one body—whether Jews or Gentiles, slave or free—and we were all given the one Spirit to drink (I Cor. 12:13 NIV). In addition, baptism connects with spiritual birth along with the Spirit’s reception. Hence, participation in Christ’s resurrection indicates that the Holy Spirit is presently in our lives. Baptism is an indication of the relationship we have with Christ and wherever we find ourselves in the world, our deportment, attitude and disposition should be in alignment with our confession of faith. Jesus’ baptism should help us realize how much we are loved by God. Jesus died to pay a debt he did not owe to release from a debt we could not pay. Baptism is a two-fold operation because we are symbolically
into the Kingdom of God, and if a person is to be baptised they should
Philosophy of Ministry: God's desires come first, I must always live my ministry God's way. I must live as a Christian (1 Corinthians 9:27) I must have a proper relationship of surrender to the Leader. In my personal life or in the Church I must understand that Christ is Head and Chief Shepherd (Ephesians 1:22, Hebrews 13:20). The “management” of Church is about relationships with God and Man, not just maintaining a social organization.
Charles Wright Mills was one of the most important American sociologist. He believed that people should identify the social origin of a person’s problem and understand the larger social factors that effect it. Consequently, people who do not understand the social origin and acknowledge the problem will not find the solution (Ravelli & Webber, 2015). However, another problem with identifying the issue in a larger social context is that people are too afraid to voice their problems. People are ashamed and scared other will judge them for their problem.
In this part of our Church history, an insight that we can gain from this period would be how the Apostles especially Peter and Paul began establishing the Good News into the Christian communities by the Holy Spirit descending upon them during the time of the Pentecost. It was also the time when the early followers of the Church declared a name for themselves, known as Christians. • The Early Church (A.D. 70-312) 1. This period shows the sacrifice and struggle it took for the early Christians to spread the Word during the time of persecution of Jews and the Church in Israel and Rome, which led to the work of the Gospel of Christ become preserved for the future followers. The way Peter and Paul sacrificed themselves by dying as martyrs and the distance it took for the early followers to spread and escape from the horrors of persecution strengthened the bond and lasting of the early Church, since it showed the
In a careful examination of the author’s non-denominational church’s understanding and statements on ordained ministry, evidence shows an acknowledgement is before a community of believers. The acknowledgement is that a person has been called into ministry for the Lord. The process proceeds into a time spent in prayer and mentoring with the presiding Pastor. It is during these times a person’s calling is subject to be tested, fostered, confirmed, or its understanding modified. One can consider this challenge a part of training in the service to God.
First major theme of the book of Acts is the work of the Holy Spirit in the apostles and the early church. Jesus appeared to his disciples and commanded them not to leave Jerusalem but wait for the gift, the Holy Spirit (Acts 1:3b-5) As they gathered together and prayed in one place, the Holy Spirit came to rest on each of them (2:1-3). The disciples who were filled with the Holy Spirit boldly proclaimed God’s word and performed miracles (2:14-42, 3:1-10). Throughout the book, the author focuses on how the Holy Spirt ministers the apostles and the believers in their lives and the community.
The disciples had all been praying together when, “Suddenly a sound like that of a violent rushing wind came from heaven…” (Acts 2:2 HCSB). They were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in tongues, different languages. A multitude came together and started accusing
It is followed by years of catechesis before being completed late by Confirmation and the Eucharist, the summit of Christian initiation. Baptism is the Church 's way of celebrating and enacting the embrace of God and the promise of salvation. 'Peter replied, "Repent and be baptised..." ' (Acts 2: 38-39) Baptism happens not only to the individual, but also the wider Church. At the time of Christ it signified that the person being baptised became a follower of Christ and acquired a relationship with him. '... I (Paul) also baptised the household of Stephanas... ' (1 Corinthians 1:16) The rite is celebrated with the community present and actively participating. It is the community, who will journey with them throughout their
Christians must come to understand that in order to serve God and His people well, we need to know and live better my Catholic Faith. We must study and read about the Church’s teachings and traditions to appreciate them better, but we must also allow the Holy Spirit to guide us in our Christian lives. He will do it! God’s Spirit desires to form a close relationship with each and every one of us. Indeed, He is the Great Unknown Companion within us that we already received in our baptism to form us perfectly into God’s image and likeness. However, if in Baptism we receive the Spirit to bear Christ 's image, it 's equally true that in Confirmation we are sent by God in that same Spirit to bear true witness to Christ. With the Holy Spirit we are sent to share with others the wonders that God has done, and to share that God is alive and that God is love. Therefore, open your heart to the Holy Spirit’s presence and action in your life; always invite Him with desire, faith, and fervor to fill you completely; and pray to Him constantly for wisdom, strength, guidance, and courage. God will do it – yes, He will! God bless you
During Baptism, we are received into the church. Baptism is important as it represents a death to the old sinful life. and a rise to a new life as a Christian. Water is used to cleanse and during Baptism, an infant is cleansed of original sin or a believer is. cleansed of personal sin.
