“Man, Fragged by the LPB Sniper again!!!” That may sound like nonsense to the average person but to the seasoned Counterstrike veteran it speaks volumes. Today, millions of people of all ages are coming together on the Internet to compete against each other in a variety of online games. The most popular of which is an online modification of the game Half-life entitled Counterstrike. Counterstrike itself is comprised of players broken up in to two teams, terrorists and counter terrorists, who then compete against each other to achieve a range of goals in a variety of levels. People from anyplace in the world can log in to one of the hundreds of Counterstrike servers running on the Internet and team up with and play against anybody anywhere. To play the game players manipulate their characters movements inside the simulated scenario they see on their monitor. They do so by using the keyboard and mouse in tandem to move around the level, find opposing players and then “frag” or kill them with whatever weapon they currently have, there by eliminating them for the remainder of the round. However, in most cases the teams’ goals are more complex than just eliminating the other team. For instance, in one level one player assumes the role of the V.I.P. and his counter terrorist teammates try to escort him to a helicopter on the other side of the level. The terrorist teams objective is to find and assassinate the V.I.P. before he is able to escape. This and other missions like it create an exciting and adrenaline filled environment that are part of the reason gamers just can not quit. For the most part people team up with and compete against people they haven’t met and probably never will meet in a face-to-face manner. This yields some very interesting results. I was able to observe two peers of mine playing Counterstrike online in the same room on their separate computers on several occasions for extended periods. Also, I installed Counterstrike on my computer here in my dorm room and played online myself a number of times. The first thing that I noted and the first I am going to talk about is the player’s ability to create and maintain their own online identity. Every player in an online game of Counterstrike or any other game for that matter has his or her own handle or call sign. They are nicknames that the players come up with themselves and adopt as names ... ... middle of paper ... ...10 dollars to gain access to an online server that acts as a simulated finite world for each person to place their character in. Players manipulate their character and basically live that person’s live in that finite simulated world that contains other players. They buy property, get a job and interact with other players. I was unable to actually observe anyone playing Everquest or play it myself. However it seems to take the level of interaction to new levels. For obvious reasons I find that a little unsettling. I think that is safe to say that many people actually prefer their simulated online personas and friends to their real life ones. That may pose new problems in the future. At the pace that technology is currently developing I think that soon the number of people who find more satisfaction and fulfillment in their “cyber lives” will only grow. Also, to speculate a little I think that in the future it will probably be possible to immerse yourself in a totally simulated environment. Will be people totally isolate themselves and spend years inside life simulations oblivious to the real world but still perfectly content to live out their days in a Matrix like cyber dreamscape?
Joan of Arc -Joan of Arc was a peasant girl living in Medieval France. She believed that God had chosen her to lead France to victory against England because she had visions, she was soon captured by Anglo Burgundian forces and tried for witchcraft and heresy and burned at the stake.
About six hundred years ago in Europe, the French and the English were fighting for the French throne. Charles VII, the dauphin, was fighting against Henry VI, the King of England (Clin, 3). This war, later known as the Hundred Years’ War, took place during the 15th century. Joan of Arc, a peasant girl from Domrémy, joined the side of the dauphin after voices that she claimed came from saints, instructed her to help (Schmalz). Her influence brought about the end of the siege on Orléans and the coronation of King Charles. Joan was able to rally the French forces and turn the momentum of the entire war around (Clin, 3). Despite being a woman in a time when females were subjugate to males, Joan of Arc was the most influential warrior in the Hundred Years’ War because her leading role in the break of the siege on Orléans, the crowning of the king and her symbolic significance for France were major turning points in the war.
Joan d’Arc was a very selfless and happy child. According to Sister Marie-Bernard, she was born in 1412 to Jacques and Isabella d’Arc. (2) They were peasant farmers who lived in Domremy. She was the fifth child and the second girl they had. Sister Marie- Bernard went on to state in her article that Joan was very strong in her Catholic faith, and she loved the poor. (2) Joan would go to mass every Sunday and many other days of the week. If she couldn’t find a way to get to the holy sacrament, she would kneel in the fields and pray. IN fact, she was never given proper education, but instead learned prayers from her mother. She often gave up her own bed to foreigners, whom her parents would open their house to, opting for the hard floor instead. All of this shows that she was a remarkably giving child who had an extremely strong faith.
...erything is automated. The battles seem more like a movie sequence then a game and because of this it takes away the most interesting part of the game.
She was a peasant girl living in medieval France born in 1412 who by the age of 13 had begun to hear voices which she believed had been sent by God to give her a mission of overwhelming importance. She was being told to save France by expelling its enemies, and to install Charles as its rightful King. Joan convinced the prince at the time to allow her to lead a French army to the besieged city of Orleans, where they achieved a momentous victory over the English. After that Joan of Arc was captured by Anglo-Burgundian forces where she was tried for witchcraft and heresy and burned at the stake at the age of nineteen.
I always feel that more people are afraid of how they are going to die more than death itself. My mom always says that she doesn’t fear death because she believes it to be a peaceful thing. She works in a nursing home and has experienced many deaths. I believe that people who are old or are very ill, that when they die they are being put to rest from all their pain and suffering. People put their animals down so they are no longer suffering. For me, death means ending one life and entering an eternal life. Death is not a bad thing and it’s not
The Hundred Years War was battles between England and France over the French throne. The war began in 1337 when King Phillip VI of France tried to take English territories in the Duchy of Aquitaine in Southwestern France. There were battles of Chevaucheè tactics which were scorching the Earth, raids, naval battling, and sieges. Several raids occurred in Joan of Arc’s village when she was a child. A devastating raid burned her village to the ground.
Joan of Arc was an amazing girl with lots of courage and lots of bravery. She fought in what seemed to be an everlasting war with more bravery than most of the men of her time. She never gave up and she never surrendered to the enemy. Her life was one filled with hard fought battles and risky adventures. She risked everything to do what God summoned her to do. Her story is one that proves that Joan of Arc, over all others, is truly the best heroine of all times.
Saint Joan by Bernard Shaw illustrates the story of Saint Joan; a young woman who took charge of the French Armies during the Hundred Years' War. Joan is set on this course through voices that she believes come from a heavenly source. Although Joan is guided to victory, she is ultimately burned at the stake because many religious and secu-lar officials are threatened by the power Joan holds. The officials try to legitimize her death by reasoning that Joan disregarded many of the beliefs and customs of The Church, therefore making her a heretic. However, Joan was not only burned for being a supposed heretic, but also for political reasons tied to The Church and feudal hierarchy.
Whether they be first-person shooters like Call of Duty, sports games like Madden or Fifa, racing games like Forza or Mariokart, or even games and apps on your phones, there are quite a bit of gamers in here. According to the Entertainment Software Association, about 59% of American play some sort of video game, so gaming isn’t all that uncommon (Entertainment Software Association, 2014). As such, there must be some sort of effect on the audience of this growing form of entertainment.
A system of communication between the players and developers has the potential to directly influence customer satisfaction. Jeremy Kelly points out “it is assumed that developers seek to maximize profits” (Kelly). From a developer’s standpoint, knowing the thoughts and feelings of the player base is one of the most important parts of the ongoing development MMORPGs are known for. Joshua Hong states that the key difference between a MMORPG and other online or offline videogames is the existence of a persistent world (6). Creating a MMORPG costs upwards of 15 million dollars, and this figure does not even include the cost of continued support after the game launches (Hong 8). “These games demand virtual worlds, significant hardware requirements from the developer (e.g., servers and bandwidth), and dedicated support staff” (“MMORPG”). Due to the unusually large investment needed to develop a MMORPG compared to normal games, MMORPGs only thrive financially through longevity. It is therefore imperative that good communication exists so customer satisfaction can be kept high. As seen in Figure 1, 63.5% of MMORPG players consider the most important aspect of the game to be influenced or directly controlled by mechanics coded by the developers (“Making friends” and “Pretending to be someone else” are considered to be primarily soci...

Throughout the course of history, individuals have enjoyed playing sports. Whether it would be throwing a football, sprinting around the track, or kicking a soccer ball; sports have been a popular activity worldwide. The determination and expertise needed to play sports at the highest level has made it a challenging yet enjoyable activity. However in the recent years, sports have slowly drifted off from it’s traditional roots of physical prowess and into competitions of mental proficiencies. With the exponential growth of technology worldwide, it is not uncommon for the average household to have a computer, PS4, Xbox One, or even a Nintendo 3DS. In fact, the introduction of new technological entertainment has served as a gateway for the new generation of athlete culture; video games. As a result of the growth of video games, Esports (short for ‘Electronic Sports’) is slowly being integrated into athlete culture worldwide through its spectacular foundations, overwhelming popularity, vast prize pools, and recognition by official authorities.
Call of duty provides a unique experience of playing as an American, and Soviet soldiers with each of the country’s weapons, vehicles, and fights tactics. Once you are inside the game, it’s kind of hard to stop playing. Many people stay up all night playing online with their group or clans trying to rank up while other usually play solo practicing trying to get better or just playing for fun. It’s a competitive game and sometimes, you can get frustrated a lot because you will get killed, internet connection is bad, or you probably just don’t really know how to play at all. When I first started playing, I wasn’t all that good, but now that I played for so long, it’s easy to just walk around shooting any enemy I see. Call of Duty has many different options to where you choose what you want to wear, what type of gun you would like to use and features to put on your gun, and what maps you would like to play at. It also gives you choices to back out of a game, usually because you are losing or want a different team, or becaus...
