Military Veterans Challenges

The video examined individual veteran students and their university learning situations. Each scenario is one of a veteran university student matriculating along in their studies and the challenges that they faced. Their military service is reflected in their college studies in a variety of ways. Each individual brings his or her idiocrasies that the military experience has shaped. The first student had an attention/ long term memory problem which may have had barring from his having gone to war and his returning and not find things to be as comfortable and stable as in the military. The student seemed to not want to interact and air out his problems with his friend in order to seek help with the university veteran support group. With some deep wrangling, the young man subcomes and gets the help he needs. In the case of the young veteran woman student, there is a defensive attitude that needs to be overcome. While in the military, she was organized with a lot of structure to allow her to achieve, but she found herself at the university as somewhat of “a loser”. As more military veterans enroll in higher education institutions, college and universities across the country need to implement or improve services to make higher education more responsive to this group’s unique needs after returning from war. Here are three common challenges veterans face as they enter the college environment and how institutions can do their part to ease the transition. This presentation could be of help to universities, but as well to individuals who may have friends who have returned from war situations and are trying to move on with their lives after serving in war and even to move into university life or the job arena.
