A leader is someone who guides people through a common belief and inspires them to accomplish a goal. Generally, a leader is an individual that many people look to for help and guidance. But how do leaders arise? Are they born into existence? Do they develop leadership qualities as they go through life? Many years ago, people explained leadership using the Great Man Theory, which states that leaders are born with specific traits that make them distinct from the common man. However, this idea has shifted and people now say that leaders are not born, but that they are shaped through their environment. Therefore, it is unclear if leaders are born or if they are formed through experience. This belief, in a way, combines the two. Throughout this …show more content…
Jamie L. Hickman wrote Leaders Making Leaders: Crafting Effective Learning Strategies to Promote Army Leadership. In the paper it states that “in order to grow into a leadership role, cadets look first to their teachers and mentors before they must reach inside themselves to find their own inner leader,” (1). At military academies and in ROTC programs, company officers and other leaders motivate their cadets to be the best that they can, which consequently helps to develop the best military that the United States can achieve. Those leaders push their cadets past their breaking point to find out what they are really made of, so that they are ready for anything that comes their way. When the cadets watch their mentors lead in a way that inspires them, they learn proper leadership methods that they will take with them and use in the field. Then, when they are ready, those mentors pass on the responsibility to their cadets. According to the Army’s leadership doctrinal manual, Field Manual (FM) 6-22, “the Army depends upon itself to develop adaptable leaders able to achieve mission accomplishment in dynamic, unstable, and complex environments,” (pg. 11). The Army not only teaches discipline, but it also teaches people how to change and adapt in specific situations. This is very important when it comes to leadership because any leader must always be prepared for …show more content…
To become a CEO, there are three major steps. The first is to obtain a bachelor’s degree, for which some studies are more important than others, as stated in “How to Become a Chief Executive Officer:” “majors for aspiring CEOs might include liberal arts, business administration or public administration” (How to Become a Chief Executive Officer). Obtaining a bachelor’s degree takes about four years, assuming you finish on time. Whichever route someone decides to take will give them certain tools needed to lead for the specific major. The second step is to get your MBA, which takes two years to obtain. During this step students can get internships that will “allow future CEOs to acquire work experience while still enrolled in school” (How to Become a Chief Executive Officer). While working and going to school, a student is able to learn how to lead in an organized and successful way. Internships are a very pertinent part to step three, which is to gain experience. When you are trying to become any type of leader it is important that you get as much experience as you can before leading anyone, let alone an entire company. In some cases, companies “offer corporate training or development programs, which can help potential chief executive officers learn the tricks of the trade and teach them how to be a high-level manager” (How to Become a Chief Executive Officer). You can study as much as you
What comes to mind when someone hear the words “born leader”? Certainly, one thinks of a person with the qualities of passion, integrity, confidence, and intelligence. Since the beginning of civilization, born leaders, through their actions, have been able to greatly impact their environment. Shi Huangdi, Siddhartha Gautama, and King Hammurabi are just a few examples of specific leaders in early civilizations that left legacies that have lasted for centuries. Overall, individuals in the past had such amazing leadership skills that they were able to shape the times in which they lived.
The purpose of this memorandum is to outline my view point on leadership. As a Drill Sergeant, it is my responsibility to transform civilians into well discipline, physically fit, and competent scouts. I am entrusted to uphold the Army standards, live the Army Values and Warrior Ethos, and instill Esprit de corps.
The U.S. Army Research Institute for the Behavioral and Social Sciences, known as ARI, interviewed 41 active duty Army leaders. Most of the Army leaders interviewed acknowledged using strengths-based techniques to some extent, often without obvious knowledge of strengths-based leadership (Key-Roberts, 2014). Nevertheless, several soldiers have found the techniques as being very effective. Army superiors can use strength based leadership to develop juniors by identifying strengths, providing personalized feedback, capitalizing on subordinate strong attributes, building and maintaining a positive atmosphere, caring for subordinates, and empowering the young leaders (Key-Roberts, 2014).
Despite the tendency to treat West Point as if it is a world apart from the Army, the choices I make here and now form who I will be when it matters even more. Just as leadership lessons can be learned in a History of the Military Art class in an interdisciplinary manner, I need to focus on pulling as many lessons from my time at West Point so I can apply them when the stakes are potentially much higher. My leadership can expect a top tier performer who strives to be one of the most competent Non-commissioned Officer’s within the unit. I will do this by adhering to the regulations, unit sop’s and any other guidance which governs my section. I will ensure my soldiers do the same, holding them to strict but attainable standards and expecting nothing less. I will teach, coach, counsel, and mentor these soldiers-teaching them what a leader is and grooming them to be leaders also.
All soldiers, especially leaders, are highly recommended to keep a certain set of values that radiate throughout the entire U.S. Army. They are challenged to keep them near and dear to their hearts and to define and live them every day. A leader is one who takes these challenges serious and abides by
What is a leader? A leader is someone who takes command and leads an organization or group to success. Anyone can be a leader but in order to become a great leader you have to have to possess certain characteristics. I will be using Odysseus from the Odyssey isas an example of a leader who has suitable characteristics. You also have to know what harmful characteristics a leader may possess to determine if they are good leaders or not.
The leadership is a result of a combination of traits, with special emphasis on the personal qualities of the leader, which he should possess certain personality traits that would be special facilitators in leadership performance. This theory shows that leaders are born as such, there is no likelihood of 'making' them later with personal development techniques.
The Army spends a great deal of time making followers into leaders and leaders into followers by utilizing several levels of training throughout their military career. This training allows a Soldier to perfect the knowledge and skills required to be an effective leader in every aspect of their job. ...
The only way to develop the kind of leaders a changing organization needs is to make leadership a critical criterion for promotion, and then manage people’s careers to develop it.
A leader is described as a person who guides others and has authority and influence over others. They work to influence others into meeting certain goals. There is no right or wrong definition of a leader and there is no recipe that ensures effective leadership. Successful leaders have a good balance of vision, influence, and power. Leaders gain their authority from their ability to influence others to get the work done; because of this, anyone has the potential to be a leader. (Finkelman. 2012, p15)
The Greek statesman Solon stated, “He who has learned how to obey will know how to command.” Approximately 250 years later, the Greek philosopher Aristotle asserted the converse of that statement when he said, “He who has never learned to obey cannot be a good commander.” The concept of following seems to have been an important idea in ancient Greek times, but why is this idea of being a good follower important to today’s military leader? In order to be a truly effective leader, one must first learn to be a truly effective follower. Learning to be an effective follower is a required facet of effective leadership because we follow others at times, we learn by following, and we develop future leaders by following.
When it was my turn to lead I focused on giving orders with confidence and sticking with my decisions for how the mission was to be carried out. This worked out very well because the other cadets in my section followed my orders without question and displayed high motivation in doing so. With other section commanders we were less confident in carrying out the tasks they gave us. They were constantly changing their minds about what to do and were unsure of themselves and hesitant when giving orders. This led to minor disorder when it came time to do the mission. The members of the section were not confident that they were prepared for the mission and it was because the section commander was lacking confidence in their decisions. This demonstrates how effective it is to have self-confidence as a
The primary leadership theory I believe in comes from John Maxwell and speaks to the dual nature of leadership: leaders are both born and made. I believe that some individuals are born with innate leadership qualities and that those characteristics, though infantile, if cultivated, evolve through lifelong experiences, training and development. Maxwell asserts that born leaders require cultivation: “Leadership is developed, not discovered. The truly “born leader” will always emerge; but to stay on top, natural leadership characteristics must be developed”(Maxwell, 1993 p. viii). Maxwell indicates that individuals who want to become leaders fit into one of four categories: the leading leader, the learned leader, the latent leader or the limited leader.
Leadership is found not just at work but all around us. In any situation, leaders take a step forward and take charge of the situation. It can be at home, at work or at any other place. Leaders are never born, they become leaders because they have the credibility and people would love to follow them.
