Midwife Personal Statement

During my first pregnancy, I remember feeling curious about how my body was changing and the miracle that was being nurtured inside me. My first child was born in a hospital, and being young, I remember how terrifying and out of control the birth process felt, despite reassurances that it had been a straightforward delivery. I was fortunate to have a fantastic midwife who subsequently supported me through my next pregnancies and births. At this time, I was juggling the demands of raising a baby alongside a full time college course, training to become a nursery nurse. During this course I researched the role of a midwife. I was intrigued to learn how diverse the role of the midwife was, learning that birth and delivery are only a minor part of the midwife’s responsibility and that primarily it is to support, advise and educate a women, empowering her to make informed choices about the care of herself and her baby. I have prepared confidential reports and care plans, attended case conferences and review meetings as part of a multi-agency team and conducted handovers. I had an amazing experience working at a mother and baby unit within a women’s prison. It taught me so much about diverse family, cultural differences and behaviours that I had never encountered before. Most recently I have been employed in a residential childcare setting, caring for “looked after” young people. Here I developed my communication skills, managing challenging situations and advocacy. Through this work I gained promotion, demonstrating leadership skills and my ability to collaborate with colleagues, outside agencies and family members to ensure the needs of the whole child are
