Health organizations require the leadership and direction provided by effective management to achieve set goals and improve patient outcomes. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the healthcare system has evolved into a complex industry, making healthcare management one of the fastest growing occupations. Therefore, with the increase in demand for managers, health organizations are more likely to thrive if the managers on board have a good understanding of their roles irrespective of the level of management they occupy, and know the similarities and differences that exist in these roles.
Healthcare management is the profession that provides leadership and direction to organizations that deliver personal health services, and to divisions, departments, units or services within those organizations. Most health organizations have a hierarchical organizational structure in form of a pyramid, such that there are many lower level managers, fewer middle level managers and the fewest number of upper level managers. Managers in each of these levels perform specific roles and responsibilities in order to efficiently accomplish the desired objectives of the organization.

The responsibility of the middle level of management is to plan the most efficient ways of executing directives from the upper level management and engaging the lower level management in implementing the plan. Also, managers are devoted to coordinating departments, ensuring that organizational and directional functions proceed seamlessly and efficiently. An important function of the middle management is the dissemination of information between the upper and lower levels and making recommendations to the upper level management, thereby enhancing communication and workflow in the organization. The government controls and regulates healthcare somewhat because healthcare organizations are in a position to take advantage of the elderly and sick so there are regulations that protects them. It seems as though healthcare facilities are being paid less for their services today. Some critical measures for the survival of a healthcare organization are to optimize performance and quality. Finding system-wide efficiencies and cost reduction healthcare will help. In order to get better and keep high quality and performance while still raising reimbursements, it is necessary and important to involve doctors with the ideas and plans for any management strategies.
Due to WellStar being a multi facility health system, its organizational design is constantly being reviewed for simpler and more efficient processes. Leaders in healthcare have so many daily obligations that they have to meet and be responsible for. Today’s leaders have to keep up with scheduling, flexing, covering vacation, meetings, their department as a whole, and make sure everything runs smoothly. With the ever changing healthcare nurses have to be up to date on new technology, training, and new education. The department head is not only a supervisor; she is a bedside nurse meeting multiple demands. She takes on tasks that include everything from the bedside nurse, to unit meetings, to charge nurse, and to scheduling, just to name a few. Speaking to leaders and managers in healthcare today the stress is at all time high from the new healthcare reform, nursing shortages, and meeting daily productivity.
