Through this senior project I will be learning how to create a space to grow microgreens outside. I would like to learn more about making my own microgreens because when I get older I would like to grow most of my own food. To be able to grow my own food means that I will be saving money at the store and I know that they are truly organic meaning they have no pesticides on them. I will also have fresh veggies to eat right in my own back yard.
Microgreens are fast growing plants including lettuce, spinach, herb, sunflower and many more. These plants can only take a month to grow and be ready to eat. With this information i could turn this into a business later in life because there is a fast turn around and that would make selling these a profitable idea. Most microgreens take about two to three weeks after being being planted to be harvest, it is best to grow plants with the similar harvest times so the plants are not disturbed when harvesting the others. Once a plant has been harvest it will not grow anymore, which means you need to start the process over again but replanting. Some may ask what would you use microgreens for and the answer is anything you would like, many people add them to salads, sandwiches or stir-fry.
Some questions that came up when I was researching are How could I start a business growing microgreens and how many people grow their own food? I started by looking up surveys and in one that was done by The National Gardening Association states that 35% of all households in america are growing food at home or in a community garden and it has raised in the last five years. There are 2 million more households with community gardening which has grown 200% since 2008.
