Acne damages the skin. The bacteria and oil cause damage to the pores, skin, and underlying tissue. In response, the body sends white blood cells and other treatment molecules called collagen to the area in an attempt to heal the damaged tissues. Most acne scars only affect the outer layers of skin. Depending on how much collagen one’s body produces affects the scar type, if the scars are depressed the body does not produce enough collagen, if the scars are raised the body produced too much collagen (American Association of Dermatology 2011).
My struggle with acne scars started when I was 14. When my acne started to clear up I began to see multiple small depressions on my face, specifically on my cheeks. I did my research and found out that

the depressions on my face were acne scars. I bought and tried multiple different types of cleansers, creams, exfoliating scrubs in hopes of treating my acne scars. The treatments were expensive, several were too harsh and abrasive for my sensitive skin, and not one of the treatments worked. Finally, I made an appointment with a dermatologist and was prescribed a treatment for my atrophic acne scars. Eventually, after a year on the regimen, my acne scars did heal, however, I wondered if there could have been an easier and less time-consuming way to heal my acne scars. Microdermabrasion is a tool being used by dermatologist to treat acne scars, stretch marks, and the effects of aging on the skin. Microdermabrasion uses microcrystals to remove the outermost layer of the skin, which is composed of mainly dead skin cells, revealing healthy skin. Microdermabrasion is a non-invasive, gentle exfoliating and resurfacing tool that is used to smooth the skin’s texture by getting rid of skin imperfections. Many people choose microdermabrasion because the abrasiveness of the tool, meaning that it could be gentle enough for sensitive skin and the recovery time is short. Microdermabrasion is used to treat acne scars because it promotes the making of healthy skin cells. I found out about microdermabrasion when my mom, Sharon Wooten went to a dermatologist with hopes of getting a scar on her face removed. The scar Wooten had removed only affected the outer layers of skin, similar to most acne scars. She has sensitive skin and she expressed her concerns to the dermatologist. The dermatologist then recommended microdermabrasion to Wooten. When explaining the procedure to Wooten the dermatologist listed the benefits of microdermabrasion, which included decrease appearance of scars, hyperpigmentation, and wrinkles. Wooten had the procedure done and I was able to see the results of her scar fading and her skin texture improving. Using research from experiments, my own observations, and an interview with someone who had a microdermabrasion treatment I discovered how microdermabrasion is effective at treating acne scars through resurfacing and that most acne scars can benefit from microdermabrasion. Microdermabrasion is effective at treating acne scars is because microdermabrasion promotes the production of new healthy skin cells which resurface and thicken the skin.
When microdermabrasion removes the outer layer of skin the body then goes into a healing mode that promotes the making of new healthier cells. Microdermabrasion is like when one sustains an injury to his skin and the body sends treatment molecules to heal the damage. Mariane Fernandes conducted an experiment with the aim to evaluate the effects of microdermabrasion on skin rejuvenation. Fernandes stated in her article “Effects of microdermabrasion on skin rejuvenation” in the Journal of Cosmetic and Laser Therapy that “Microdermabrasion treatment promoted skin rejuvenation through an increase in skin thickness due to an increase in epidermal thickness and collagen organization” (Fernandes 26). Acne weakens and thins the skin epidermal layers, causing acne scars. Microdermabrasion heals the weak, thin, and fragile skin, which makes the skin smooth and more resistant to other damaging conditions. Doctor Bruce M. Freedman an aesthetic plastic surgeon and assistant professor of plastic surgery at Georgetown University also analyzed the dermatological changes associated with microdermabrasion in “Clinical and histologic changes determine optimal treatment regimens for microdermabrasion” in the Journal of Dermatological Treatment. Freedman’s experiment also yielded results of an increase of epidermal thickness …show more content…
(195). Freedman results also included papillary dermal changes (196). The papillary is located just underneath the epidermis in skin tissue. Freedman’s results concluded that microdermabrasion did affect the thickness of the papillary dermis and appearance meaning that the microdermabrasion was effective enough to affect the underlying tissue. Microdermabrasion is an effective resurfacing tool to get rid of acne scars. I was able to see the resurfacing effects of microdermabrasion myself when Wooten had her microdermabrasion procedure. However, the process was long. She underwent a microdermabrasion regimen which included four procedures that took place bi-weekly. The whole process took eight weeks in total. The process was long because the procedure had to be gentle enough for Wooten’s sensitive skin. Microdermabrasion is a gentle procedure, so compared to other resurfacing treatments microdermabrasion will usually take longer to see results. Microdermabrasion is for the treatment of mild imperfections. Doctor James M. Spencer an internationally recognized expert in dermatology explained an article titled “Microdermabrasion” in the American Journal of Clinical Dermatology in which Spencer compared different experiments about the effectiveness of microdermabrasion. Spencer concluded that microdermabrasion “is a mild treatment that produces mild results’(94). If the scar is deep or if the reason for the scar is a deep tissue issue microdermabrasion will not be able to help because microdermabrasion does not treat underlying tissue.
In Skin inc. Zoe Draelos wrote an article titled "Microdermabrasion And Dermabrasion" and explained that microdermabrasion treatment results are as only as strong as the abrasiveness. Draelos explains by saying “You cannot achieve results if the problem is deeper that your microdermabrasion tool can reach” (60). Acne scars typically occur in the outer layers of the dermis so mild and shallow the scars are more likely to be affected by
microdermabrasion. I was able to witness the effects of microdermabrasion on a scar. Acne scars and the scar I observed are similar because acne scars are typically superficial and so was the scar I observed. I was able to see the scar fading after every microdermabrasion treatment and after the fourth treatment the scar was no longer visible. In addition to the scar being less visible, I observed an improvement in the skin’s texture. I conducted an interviewed Wooten and asked questions her questions about her experience with microdermabrasion. When I asked Wooten about the pain associated with microdermabrasion, she told me that it was a bit uncomfortable but gentle enough for her to handle it. I also asked about the healing process, she told me that after the procedure she had to stay away from the sun to prevent sun damage to the healing skin, but by the next day she was fine. When I interviewed Wooten about her experience with microdermabrasion she told me she would recommend the treatment for people with mild scars or people who would want to see an improvement in their skin’s texture. Microdermabrasion if used to treat suitable conditions is effective at resurfacing healthy skin. Microdermabrasion is being used to treat acne scars and was effective at treating my mom's (Wooten’s) superficial scar. This research is important to the many people who suffer from acne scars and are looking for a way to finally end suffering from acne scars.

The second layer of the skin is called the dermis and is also known as the middle layer. The dermis is what holds the body together. The dermis has layers to it as well as the epidermis. There are two layers to the dermis, the papillary layer and the reticular layer. The cells of the dermis are fibroblast, macrophages, mast cells, and scattered white blood cells (wbc’s). the dermis is richly supplied with nerve fibers and BV;s. dermal BV’s is also a part of the integumentary system, dermal BV,s have converging and diverging vessels that ar...

The Beauty Industry being such a wide market of services and products include providing for the care of our skin, hair, selling of perfumes and cosmetics (“What is the Beauty Industry?”2014) and now developing more extensively into basic cosmetic surgery and treatments, now gives society a big opportunity to pamper and nourish themselves in more extensive ways. Throughout this essay, the branches of dermatology and dermal therapies will be explained; common skin disorders and specifically a treatment called ‘Ultrasonic Peeling’ and how it can potentially help with skin disorders imposed today will be explored and described in detail. After the investigation of what Ultrasonic Peeling is and how it works, I will also state my opinion on how well I think the treatment benefits its users, give my evaluation if I would consider using it, what I think the positives and negatives are and in scenario, assess whether it is a treatment that more salons should consider offering.
...ective results while others see minor or temporary clearing. Generally, the best and effective treatments in the best of conditions results in only 50% reduction in acne. That is why, skin specialists are looking for and are trying combined treatments which can prove effective and help the skin stay clear longer.
2. Botox can help you keep your current wrinkles from getting worse. If you are in your 30 's and 40 's and age lines are just starting to show, you don 't need to wait until you look like a prune to seek out treatment. By getting the Botox treatments early on, you keep your facial muscles from consistently repeating the actions that develop the deep set lines you are trying to avoid. Continuing to get the treatment at regular times can prevent the marks of age, but even if you stop taking the treatments later, you will have prevented years of life from appearing on your face by acting sooner rather than
First, the injections create tiny perforations in the scalp, which triggers the body’s natural healing process. In response, the body produces more collagen and elastin in order to repair the skin. However, because the skin is not actually damaged by the microinjections, the increased levels of collagen and elastin encourage the growth of healthy hair and skin. Then, the active ingredients injected cause a chemical action, stimulating the mesoderm in order to encourage hair growth. Only high quality ingredients are used to ensure the effectiveness of this process.
To begin we will look at the integumentary system and its entire multitude of functions. The main components of the integumentary system are the skin, hair, nails, glands and nerves. For the purpose of this paper we will focus mainly on the levels of the skin and their functions. While the integumentary
In conclusion, psoriasis, although not usually deadly, is a very serious disease. It can leave permanent scaring on the skin. Almost worse than physical scaring is the emotional effect of the disease. People with psoriasis can suffer from very low self confidence, as well as depression and anger.
Bowe and Alan C. Logan briefly skimmed the effect of acne on an individual’s physiological state. Treatment of severe acne with Isotretinoin was monitored in anticipation of lowered depressive symptoms (Bowe 2011). According to the Guideline of care for the management of acne vulgaris, compiled by Andrea L. Zaenglein (co-Chair) and respective authors, complementary therapies and approaches include chemical peels and light activated laser treatments: potassium titanyl phosphate (KTP) and photodynamic (PDT). As per the guidelines, the PDT process begins with the application of aminolevulinic acid to the site containing acne for time periods ranging from 15 minutes to three hours. The aminolevulinic acid is then taken into the pilosebaceous duct by sebocytes and activated to manufacture oxygen (Zaenglein 2016). P. acne is an anaerobic bacteria, meaning that it does not contain the necessary enzymes needed to break down oxygen. Forced exposure to oxygen will damage and kill the
Acne scars occurs because of the infection that occurred to the acne. This is the age of cosmetic surgery helps a lot to cure this problem. Beauty begins inside the body, not outside. Washing the face and applying the latest product on the market that promises to clear acne, leaving the face smooth and unblemished is only part of the battle, a small part. Feeding the body with nutrients by ingesting foods and/or vitamin supplements rich with antioxidant properties will sustain health and vitalization that will reflect on the outside, affecting overall appearance. The Vitamin for Acne Guide, http://acnevitamin.org/, answers many of the questions related to acne and vitamin usage necessary to maintain skin that is healthy and blemish free.
Aloe is full of vitamin E and amino acids which can aid skin repair efforts. Just apply a bit of aloe vera over the scars daily after your shower. If your scar is recent, this product can work wonders.
Many young adults do not take good care of their skin. As a result, the skin is likely to age prematurely. In most
