Microaggression and it affects non marginalized groups of people in society.
The word microaggression is a term used to describe the insults, brush offs, and slights directed at a person or particular group of people either because of their sex, age, race, gender, and/or their sexuality, particularly those marginalized by society.
There are three types of microaggressions. First, there are the deliberate actions known as microassaults, which are very similar to old fashioned racism. The second type is the microinsult. For example, a non heteronormative couple comes into a restaurant but are put in a section that is considered undesirable while the straight couple that come in after then are sat in the nicer section of the restaurant. In the movie Precious the scene where she is catcalled by a group of men on the street. This is a gender microaggression because it fulfills a theme of what we know as sexual objectification. Even when you think it’s a compliment, it can still be offensive.
Precious also covers microaggression towards class, race, and gender differences. Abuse, poverty and betrayal are such common themes in this heart wrenching film. The story centers around a young African-American girl who is pregnant with her father’s son and is HIV positive. Her mother frequently abuses her physically and verbally. Telling Precious that no one will ever want her and that she needs to get on welfare. The movie shows casts light on how people in poverty are treated, especially women of color.
In a paper called, “Learning Poverty Firsthand” Jason DeParle questions how people are expected to survive when they are in poverty, stating that the poor simply can’t survive on welfare alone. Microaggressions are committed constantly, among numerous people without them realizing it. I must say I am completely guilty of also playing part in this act. These acts are done constantly and no one understands the affects it has on people. Miller and Garran (2008) states, “Racial microaggressions are similar to aversive racism. They are “subtle, stunning, often automatic,” verbal and nonverbal putdowns and social assaults that wound people of color unbeknownst to the perpetrator” (p.97). Precious is a teen mother expecting her second child, who is also her father’s child due to him raping her. She is verbally and physically abused constantly by her mother and lives in a very unhealthy environment overall. She takes care of herself and her mother and is told what to do everyday. In the movie she begins to turn her life around when a teacher has faith in her and she begins to get an education, and learns she is not what her mother thinks she is.

He defines the concept of microaggressions as “brief, everyday exchanges that send denigrating messages to people of colour because they belong to a racial minority group” (1). Not having food, clothes, a roof over your head, money, or a job. It means living a lower quality of life than the average person. Poverty can be someone’s choice of lifestyle. They may spend all their money on fancy materialistic items rather than on basic human needs. Tressie McMillan Cottom’s article, “The Logic of Stupid Poor People”, states how there are two types of poor people. One that tries to be acceptable, and one tries to be presentable. “...‘Acceptable’ is about gaining access to a limited set of rewards granted upon group membership (Cottom 4).” Cottom believes that people living in poverty should strive to appear acceptable rather than presentable. Being acceptable is the logical way of going about being in poverty. It’s actually trying to make yourself be better rather than just trying to be the bare minimum that society wants. People living in poverty are usually perceived as not knowing how to manage money because most people living in poverty spend their money on expensive cars and accessories. In the movie “ Precious “ by Lee Daniels, Gabourey Sidibe plays a sixteen years old, illiterate and overweight girl name Precious, who lives in Harlem, New York. She lives with her mother Mary Jones, who was entropic and abusive to her. The abuse and oppression was so traumatic for Precious, she would often dissociate herself from the situation and pretend to be someone else. Losing track of time, her situation and herself was her coping mechanism; throughout the movie it appeared that she would have these dreaming episodes where she would be another person in a much better situation. Precious become pregnant twice from her biological father, who had abandoned the family and infected both she and her mother with the HIV virus. She suffered long-term physical, emotional, sexual, and verbal abuse from her from her parents; symptoms from her personal oppression were depressive and withdrawn attitude. Often she was very quiet and appeared unengaged and inattentive in class.
Dilemma 1: Clash of racial realities; where racial perceptions of people of color differ markedly from those of whites. White Americans believe that minorities are doing better, that discrimination is declining, and that racism is not a significant factor anymore however, minorities, on the other hand, perceive whites as racially insensitive, believing they are superior, and treat them poorly because of their race. Dilemma 2: the invisibility of unintentional expressions of bias; research continues to confirm the existence of unconscious racial biases in well-intentioned whites and that nearly everyone born in America inherits the racial biases of the society. According to this finding, microaggressions would occur when whites would pretend not to notice differences, thereby justifying that "color" was not involved at all, in any of the actions taken. Dilemma 3: perceived minimal harm of racial microaggressions; where/when people of color are told to stop overreacting and to just let it go and so they are encouraged to not waste any time or effort on them. For example, some children as young as toddlers can be bullied for their skin color and adults can face offensive comments or unfair treatment in their work places. The only reason why these scenarios are not really recognized is because some of these types of comments have been internalized- the system that is embedded in our society supports and allows discrimination. This means that it has been so ingrained into our society that calling black people something as ‘innocent’ as “sassy” or even as offensive as calling Latinos “lazy” have been completely normalized because people have been so used to hearing these types of statements. Institutional racism involves policies of institutions that have a disproportionately negative effect on racial minorities. Even saying, “black people are all fast runners” is a stereotype. Now, some people might think: what’s bad about that? It is not the comment itself; rather, the assumption and generalization that a single race is the same instead of recognizing individualism.
