The movie Precious is a movie about a sixteen year old girl nicknamed Precious. The movie shows her difficult life as she lives with her mother. Precious is a teen mother expecting her second child, who is also her father’s child due to him raping her. She is verbally and physically abused constantly by her mother and lives in a very unhealthy environment overall. She takes care of herself and her mother and is told what to do everyday. In the movie she begins to turn her life around when a teacher has faith in her and she begins to get an education, and learns she is not what her mother thinks she is.
I feel Precious is more mature than most people are at her age. She experienced sexual encounters far too young, and gained much responsibility at an early age. She became pregnant as a teenager, and constantly takes care of herself and her mother. She does the cooks and takes care of chores, and goes out by herself. She had no choice but to

grow up faster than she had to. Though she has matured greatly from these experiences it appears as though she is still somewhat in the adolescent psychosocial stage. She wants a sense of belonging and wants desperately to fit in. She wishes she was thin, white, and blonde. These are what society sees as beautiful in the movie and she wants to fit in that beauty stereotype. She somewhat creeps into the early adulthood psychosocial stage of intimacy vs. isolation as well. She dreams of having a boyfriend and desperately wishes she had a relationship. At first she hides the fact that her dad raped her and that she was carrying his child, and later admits she has never actually had a relationship. She wishes she had a boyfriend who treated her well and thinks highly of her. Having children is also making her begin to enter the adulthood stage, as she has to experience parenthood early. This takes a great amount of responsibility. Precious’s personal intelligence is most definitely different than the average person in the beginning of the movie. Her analytical intelligence appears to be rather low in the beginning of the movie, but as it progresses she begins to learn and understand what’s going on in the classroom more. She learns how to read and write. She was however good at math throughout the movie, as it seemed she was good with numbers but not with words. I feel as though she can be rather creative though. She begins to love to write and she is always imagining scenarios in her mind. That takes creativity in itself. She also seems to handle change well. She relocates away from her mother in a halfway house and faces becoming a mother. These are both very big changes that she seemed to handle excellently. I feel like she may be below average for practical intelligence. She let’s others take control of her easily and doesn’t defend herself much. Though through the movie she begins to stand up for herself and handles things better. She gets away from her abusive mother and seeks the help of her teacher. This shows she begins to use her practical intelligence even more. It appears as though precious lacks emotional intelligence. I feel as though she doesn’t think about others emotions right away. In the movie she bullies a girl, and is rude to those who try to help her after becoming upset due to her mother. She doesn’t think how things will affect them. She understands her own feelings more than others though. She knows she's miserable living under her mother’s abuse. Precious also does not seem to want to think about the terrible situations in her life. She wants to escape and imagines herself living a nice life. Precious’s personality appears to be imbalanced. First, for her id it seems she is lacking a little too much. She doesn’t allow herself too much pleasure. She isn’t that selfish and doesn’t require instant gratification. She has grown up giving her mother instant gratification rather instead. She cooks her meals as soon as she asks and does what her mother wants her to do. This leads to the ego part of her personality. She seems to possess a larger ego. She has to think about survival more. She withstands her mother because she doesn’t know what she would do without her. She obeys her to stay out of trouble and takes on the insults and abuse. She lies to people outside her home so her mother doesn’t get mad and so no one finds out about the physical and verbal abuse. She does what she can to get by. She especially shows this later in the movie after she has her second child. Her mother nearly kills her and almost hurts her baby, and she gets away at whatever cost it’ll take. She breaks into her teacher's office just to have shelter and would do anything to protect herself and her baby. She protects herself physically, but also mentally as well. When she is going through traumatic times her mind tries to protect itself by dissociating. She imagines she is somewheres else where she is loved and famous. This happens several times throughout the day when bad things happen to her. One moment she dissociated was when she was being raped as a way to protect herself and not realize fully what was going on. Her superego may be normal. She seems to have good morals and overall is a good person. She doesn’t intentionally hurt others and tries to appreciate the help that is given to her. She easily obeys what she is told to do most of the time. Although she has a good ego and a decent superego, it still causes conflicts. The lack of an id makes it easy for people to abuse and take advantage of her, and make her believe the things they tell her. Precious may have multiple mental disorders.
One that was immediately noticed she may have is a dissociative disorder. When traumatic events are happening to her she dissociates to protect herself. She becomes a famous singer everyone loves and admires. Although it may not be dissociative identity disorder as she does not dissociate into more than one person when it happens. She becomes a famous star all the times she dissociates so this may rule out that disorder. Dissociative amnesia may be a possibility. I believe there would be enough evidence to show she has a dissociative disorder. Another mental disorder she may have is depression. It is very noticeable how unhappy she is due to the abuse and bullying of others. She believe’s them when they say awful things about them and thinks very negatively of herself. She wishes she was dead and always keeps to herself. All her traumatic life events including rape and abuse could most definitely bring on depression. I feel there is enough evidence to diagnose her with
this.
The crisis event in the movie precious is rather obscure at first. At first look you think that the crisis event is that precious is kicked out of school sent to an alternative school because she's pregnant, however I disagree. I believe the true crisis event occurred after precious had her child and went home to her mother’s apartment. Up to that point, precious had never asked for help from anyone regarding her home life or the abuse that was taking place. When precious’s returned home from the hospital with her baby and was attacked by her mother, she ran away to the only place she knew to go that was safe, her school.
“Excelsior! I’m gonna take all this negativity and use it as fuel and I’m gonna find a silver lining. That’s what I’m gonna do” (Russell, 2013). A silver lining is defined as having optimism or a positive outlook on a situation that might seem gloomy on the outside. Silver Linings Playbook is centered around Pat Solitono Jr, a middle-aged man who just spent eight months in a psychiatric hospital for beating the man whom his wife had an affair with. Pat leaves the hospital determined to accomplish his unrealistic goal of winning his wife back. His motto is “Excelsior” (Russell, 2013) and he uses this to fuel his actions. He believes every negative action can result in a positive action. He also believes he can rise up and be superior over his actions and others to win his wife back. Pat has Bipolar I disorder with manic episodes that can be seen played out in the movie. He himself states, “undiagnosed bipolar with mood swings and weird thinking brought on by stress” (Russell, 2013).
Precious and her family members are invisible to the larger world because they don’t posses any skill that enables them to make even the slightest difference in the world. The tests that Precious take show her lack of intelligence and only amplify her inferiority to the people around her. When you’re invisible, nobody treats you with respect; in the beginning of the book, everyone treats Precious like worthless trash. Though, later, she becomes visible again through the people she meets at the alternative school, and the birth of her second baby, Abdul.
From the social media claims to her behavior in public, it is plain to see that there is some metal ailment that is troubling the actress. In Amanda Bynes’ case, I believe that she is experiencing symptoms of both Bipolar Disorder as well as Schizophrenia. With symptoms of both of these mental illnesses present, I believe that Bynes would fall under the category of having a Schizoaffective Disorder. The first symptom of a Schizoaffective Disorder is delusions. According to our text, a delusion is known as a misrepresentation of reality and can be seen in Amanda when accused an officer of sexually assaulting her as well as when she declared that she was becoming a rapper and was allergic to both marijuana and alcohol. The next symptom that could be present would be the disordered thinking and that she displayed on social media with her tweets, as well as the instances where she was caught in public talking to herself, locking herself in bathrooms and dressing rooms, as well as wearing inappropriate clothing, or sometimes no clothing at all in public places. The next symptom that may have been present is the depressed mood. Although it wasn’t overly apparent in her behavior, there were indicators of depression in the angry outbursts that she was having in public. She may have also have had the sense of worthlessness which caused her to lash out on celebrities for her own self-affirmation as well as having trouble with making decisions. Again, we see this in her choice to retire from acting, then coming back two years later to take up the profession again. There is also the symptom of manic behavior which can be seen in her risky life choices which got her in trouble with the law numerous times. There was also the symptom of hallucinations that goes along with the Schizoaffective Disorder, but there was no instance that described Amanda Bynes
The story of “Precious” provides an excellent example of how a person can become lost in the system, and also how one can begin to turn things around by utilizing available resources. Precious’s mother, Mary, has been taking advantage of Precious to help her manipulate the system so Mary can continue to receive welfare benefits. Precious ultimately meets with the social worker, Mrs. Weiss, who begins to help her move forward in life. It is my understanding that Precious initially met with Mrs. Weiss for welfare benefits, but this relationship seemed to change as the movie progressed. I was admittedly taken aback by the conditions of the office in which Mrs. Weiss worked, how she interacted with Precious initially,
Bully (2001) is a movie based on a true story about a group of rebellious, yet naïve teens who conspire to exact ultimate revenge on a mutual friend. In a twist, unlike most, this movie highlights not only extent of bullying amongst peers, but details the ultimate revenge that would irrevocably change the lives of the entire group. The movie takes place in South Florida where Marty, a high school dropout, and Bobby are “alleged” best friends. As they set out to meet up with mutual friends Ali and Lisa for a double date the bully is immediately apparent as Bobby begins to verbally torment Marty, which quickly turns physical as he repeatedly punches Marty while he is driving for accidently swerving. Although, Marty stops the car and retaliates,

The 2009 film “Precious”, based on the novel “Push” by Sapphire, tells the tragic story of sixteen-year-old Claireece Precious Jones; an overweight, illiterate who is now pregnant with her second child. Her life at home is a complete nightmare; her mother, Mary, verbally, emotionally and physically abuses her daily. Her father, Carl, molested her on multiple occasions and impregnated her twice then disappeared. Precious was kicked out of public school and took an offer to attend an alternative school where she meets her inspirational teacher Miss Blu Rain. Precious begins to believe in herself and prepares herself for her future. She becomes engaged in class and learns how to read and write; she was called stupid and dummy all her life and
.... Precious was finally proud of herself for doing well in school. In addition, her friends, her teacher, and her social worker were recognizing her efforts–these were some of her external esteem needs. Finally, at the very end of the movie, it is arguable that that she was self-actualized, even though this stage is never able to be satisfied because as one grows psychologically there are always new opportunities to continue to grow. However, for the time being, she was happy and free from her mother.
When you think of the word “poverty” or “poor” what comes to mind? Some think of hunger, minorities, dirty areas, women, and homeless people. What about when you hear the term “abuse”? For most people, abuse means physical; getting beat up or hit. Although abuse can mean getting beat up or hit, there is far more that follows. Abuse can take on many forms like physical, emotional or sexual. The film Precious by Lee Daniels, based on the novel Push by Sapphire, encounters not only the obvious sexual abuse but physical and emotional abuse as well. Precious starts off with Claireece Precious Jones, played by Gabourey Sidibe, at her school in Harlem. She is called to the office because the principal has found out she is pregnant…Again. Kicked out of school, Precious now tries to find an alternative when her principal tells her about “Each One Teach One”, an alternative school. Precious enrolls and goes through a journey with her new teacher, who becomes her closest friend, her newborn son, and her abusive mother. This drama film is brutal, hard-hitting, and very emotional.
Lee Daniel’s Precious is a movie centered around Precious Jones, a 16-year-old overweight black girl living in Harlem, New York. The movie begins when she is in public school pregnant with her second child by her father. Because Precious is pregnant, the principle recommends an alternative school for her. At home, Precious is a servant to her mother, Mary, who is physically, emotionally, verbally, and sexually abusing her. Mary constantly tells Precious that she is not good enough and that no one will ever want her. At times of distress, Precious tends to dissociate and fantasize about another life where she is a blonde white girl. She wants to be famous and loved by all. Precious arrives at the alternative school hardly knowing how to read or write. She gets placed in a class of girls with a dedicated teacher, Ms. Rain. Ms. Rain asks each student to write in a journal every day, and she will write back to their letters. This is the first time in the movie when Precious feels very
In the movie “ Precious “ by Lee Daniels, Gabourey Sidibe plays a sixteen years old, illiterate and overweight girl name Precious, who lives in Harlem, New York. She lives with her mother Mary Jones, who was entropic and abusive to her. The abuse and oppression was so traumatic for Precious, she would often dissociate herself from the situation and pretend to be someone else. Losing track of time, her situation and herself was her coping mechanism; throughout the movie it appeared that she would have these dreaming episodes where she would be another person in a much better situation. Precious become pregnant twice from her biological father, who had abandoned the family and infected both she and her mother with the HIV virus. She suffered long-term physical, emotional, sexual, and verbal abuse from her from her parents; symptoms from her personal oppression were depressive and withdrawn attitude. Often she was very quiet and appeared unengaged and inattentive in class.
The movie Psycho, is one of the most influential movie in Cinema history to date. The director Alfred Hitchcock, wanted to test many of the conventions of movie making that was common at that time. Alfred Hitchcock movie broke many cultural taboos and challenged the censors. Alfred Hitchcock showed a whole bunch of at the time absurd scene, for example: Marion Crane (Janet Leigh) dying naked while taking a shower, Norman Bates with split personality disorder, and the first ever flushing toilet shown in a movie. Because from the late 1920's to the late 1950's, movies were made usually go around the story, and usually with a lot dialogue. This movie gives the audience an experience that was much more emotional and intuitive. The viewers were
