This video, while probably intentional, perfectly displays the concept of Micro-Aggressions. A micro-aggression is when people enact subtle insults that may be behavioral, verbal, or social that conveys a negative attitude towards a member of a sub-group or vulnerable group. These actions are often ambiguous and the offender is often unaware that he is acting in a way that re-enforces negative stereotypes. This idea of micro-aggression can be displayed by the video when Tim Wise was talking to the speaker on “What Matters”, in which the speaker was talking about the use of buzzwords used by the Tea Party (42-43). Buzzwords such as, Real American, Take Our Country Back, Real Americans (42-43). These buzzwords are while ambiguous do point to real stereotyping toward African Americans (42-43). After the show, when Tim sated that he got a letter challenging his belief on what the Tea Party was about directly displays this idea of a micro-aggression and the use of …show more content…
Instrumental aggression is aggression that is enacted against a group of individuals who prevents one from reaching their goals. In the segment of the video on the tea parties, the party leaders were taking on aggressive actions stating that they want America to go back to the way it was (40-45). The problem with this is that America during that time had higher taxes and higher rates of government intervention, which is what the party argues against (40-45). Why would they want to go back to a time in which they problems they want to get rid of are worse then than they are now (40-45). In truth they are arguing against the promotion of racial equality (40-45). They enact their aggression by arguing against such campaigns as Medicaid and affirmative action, and will even enact aggression in order to reach their goal of securing white supremacy, thus enacting instrumental
Spiting or popping gum in ones face can send them over the edge, so I can understand Williams angry towards the teen along with the rage towards her discrimination. I’ve been discriminated against and disrespected, my boyfriend is Haitian, and me being white we get looks all the time. The color of our difference skin color is why people get upset, people give looks because were an interracial couple. Some people don’t respect interracial relationships; they think were wrong because we fell in love with what is on the inside. Family members don’t respect it, they think it’s wrong. We also have to look at it that some were raised that white is right and black is wrong, if they don’t agree with us then what can we do? It’s disrespectful to tell someone who they should or shouldn’t be with based on their skin color.
Then the video placed itself back to when Lincoln was presdent of the united states. The narrator talked about how Lincoln did not want the war to be about freeing slaves but , for the war to be about saving the union. During this times the balcks thought that linciln was fighting for them and all they wanted was to have rights. These rights consisted of land , education, ablity to vote ,, but mosting importantly was alnd they believe if theey owned land they were free. In South Carolina blacks had built their own schools, churches and communitys , on the land that they were given during the war. When Andrew Jackson was eleceted into office he did not like the idea fro blacks have their own land. So Andrew Jackson orderd Oliver O Howard a Christian general to remove the black people off the land they had made their homes. Oliver Howard called ammeting at the town hall and some were around 2,000 people attended.
In the very beginning of the movie, Chris and his white girlfriend Rose are discussing their weekend getaway to her parents house. He then asks her if her parents are aware of the fact that he is black. She responds with “First of all, my dad would have voted for Obama if he could have. Like, the love is so real.” This is a microaggression because she got defensive; she is trying to prove her father is not racist simply because he supports a black president. Once Chris and Rose arrive to her parents’ house, he is hit with even more microaggressions. Rose’s brother immediately comments on his physical appearance, which is clearly a comment he made due to Chris’s race. The entirety of Chris’s stay was filled with microaggression after microaggression. The constant repetition of racist comments is Jordan Peele’s way to truly bring it to the audience’s
The film opens with a quote by Reverend Jeremiah Wright, “Racism is how this country was founded and how this country is still run!...We [in the U.S.] believe in white supremacy and black inferiority and believe it more than we believe in God.” (Dispatch, 2013). As I read this quote, I was determined to view this film with an open mind. The film transitioned from the opening quote to a speech given by Barack Obama wherein he refers to Reverend Wright’s offensive sermons about America. Mr. Bodeker speaks stating, “…I also can’t think of another issue that is more artificial, manufactured and manipulated than this whole construct called racism.” (Dispatch, 2013). Mr. Bodeker continues, “This construct of racism is not an objective term. It has no concise definition. In fact, it’s used too often as a tool of intimidation, like a hammer, against Caucasian Whites.” (Dispatch, 2013). The interviews conducted asked questions such as, “Do you see racism in your daily life?”, “What is racism?”, “Can you give an example of the racism you see?”, “Are Blacks better at basketball than Whites?” Mr. Bodeker states, “I’m not trying to make anyone look foolish but the conventional wisdom on r...
In an article published by “Journal of Blacks in Higher Education” Lawrence states that “even though I am always troubled by public use of the term nigger, the most uniquely hateful words in the American vocabulary. And yet I would never criticize Chris Rock for when, where and how he uses it” (Lawrence 84). The reason why the writer in the article stated the he do not criticize Chris Rock for using the word Nigga he fell as if American is ‘censoring and policing black creative and expression” (Lawrence 84). Racial slurs can be positive in the African American culture because it is an image that project how black can become better parents for their kids at home and role models, how education is very important and good work ethics. “On the other hand the significance of Mr. Richards’ upheaval is about more than terrible drama strategy. Jamie Masada, the proprietor of the Laugh Factory, and Paul Mooney, a black humorist who used to compose for Richard Pryor, have joined legislators and activists, including the Democrat of California, in requiring a conclusion to the utilization of what they call the N word by everybody including blacks” ( Allen 1). This is why individual in America looks at racial slurs differently because its interpretation black culture and black entertainment depending on how they perceive the jokes.
He does this to create an aggressive reaction from the white audience, causing them to think upon their actions and show society a prevalent issue today.
The audience in this case is a group of, most likely, young African - Americans. They seem to be not be as educated as the speaker, which is displayed by the speaker essentially over explaining his arguments so that they are comp...
Not only does he negatively connote the white way of life, he blatantly threatens them by saying “ those who hope that the Negro needed to blow off steam will now be content will have a rude awakening if the nation returns to business as usual” and that “there will be neither rest nor tranquility in America until the Negro is granted his citizenship rights”(2). By basically stating that there will not be peace until Negros get rights, therefore threatening the white way of life. Outright threatening the audience would make them not even listen to one’s argument, even if it were supported by
During one passage of the speech he refers to incoming white immigrants as followed “Those Honkies that just got off the boat, they 're already Americans; Polacks are already Americans; the Italian refugees are already Americans. Everything that came out of Europe, every blue-eyed thing, is already an American. And as long as you and I have been over here, we aren 't Americans yet.” X uses these various colloquialisms to refer to the white man migrants, grouping them together as “Every blue-eyed thing,” in a derogatory sense thereby appealing to his audience’s growing fury; while at the same time indicating that he is with his audience in not being one of those “blue-eyed” things. He does the exact same thing later in his speech saying “These handkerchief-heads who have been dillydallying and pussy footing and compromising -- we don 't intend to let them pussyfoot and dillydally and compromise any longer.” This time referring to the white man as “handkerchief-heads” in the derogatory sense that it was common back then to blow one 's nose into handkerchiefs. Through colloquialisms X matched his verbatim to his audience 's level making himself more relatable and therefore increasing his
Since the beginning of social psychology, psychologist has been trying to analyze how people’s thoughts, feelings, and behavior are impacted by aggression. When an aggressive person gets frustrated or upset, social psychologist tracks down what exactly drives them to commit crimes, atrocities, or even abuse. According to Kassin, Fein, and Markus, aggression is “behavior intended to harm another individual” (2016). Individuals who attain this trait don’t always have to physically abuse someone, aggressive attacks could be verbal, emotional, or mental as well. Although many might argue that people who are viewed as aggressive tend to harm another person because that is their only cure, however, there are alternative motives that drive aggression,
A high school student cried as she recounted being tormented in middle school by her classmates. For some reason she was targeted as a “dog,” and day after day she had to walk the halls with kids barking at her. How did it stop? The girl said she stopped it. But how? She picked out another girl, someone worse off than herself, and started to call her dog. Then the others forgot about her. Then they barked at the other girl instead. Girls may be made of sugar and spice and everything nice, but on the inside, they are just plain mean. “Girls tease, insult, threaten, gossip maliciously, and play cruel games with their friends’ feelings and set up exclusive cliques and hierarchies in high schools.” (Omaha World Herald, 10A).
People marginalized by other people. By invalidating these experiences and conserving harmful stereotypes, micro- and macro-aggressions contribute to a deformed collective understanding of cultural identity, marginalized groups and deny inclusion. Micro- and macro-aggressions prevent injustice from being addressed, perpetuating systemic oppression and preventing true dialogue and
Colour’s Effect on Animals Similarly, the mystery meteor did not only effect the plants, but the animals around Nahum’s land as well. Referencing to the kill that a few hunters got near Nahum’s property, the story states that “[t]he proportions of its body seemed slightly altered in a queer way impossible to describe, while its face had taken on an expression which no one ever saw in a woodchuck before” (Lovecraft, 1927, p. 6). This shows evidence of the hunters and the townspeople being a little freaked out about the mutations that the nearby wildlife is starting to exhibit. They do not know how to stop the mutations from happening.
Why are we as aggressive and can we develop a way to reduce our ever increasing aggressive behavior? What this research paper is going to cover just might answer that. First we’re going to go over different types of aggression and the differences between them. Next will be the several theories about aggression. This will cover from a biological and genetic point of view to how our diet affects our behaviors in negative ways. We will even look into how our culture has an effect on our aggression levels. Last is what ways can we potentially reduce and manage our angry tendencies as well as control the ever rising aggressive behavior in our society.
Aggression is a problem that is very common in many children and that if not addressed early enough would continue through adolescence and later on in life. Aggression can be caused by a multitude of factor, which is sometimes considered part of a normal developmental stage; never the less aggression can also be a symptom of a multitude of disruptive behaviors (Barzman & Findling, 2008). It is important that parents learn to deal with this type of behaviors and find ways to effectively modify the child’s misconduct; according to Barzman & Findling (2008) the intricacy of aggression needs to be addressed through complex assessment strategies.
