You know him as the singer, the dancer, and the song writer. As the famous Artist whose words were often binary. As a man that was regarded with much adulation and scrutiny for singing and acting with audacity. The one and only, Michael Joseph Jackson, well known performer and the producer of many great songs, as well as the inventor of the moonwalk. Jackson often released songs that had powerful messages behind them e.g. 'We Are the World' and “Black and White”. Michael Jackson’s “They Don’t Care About Us” released as part of the “HIStory: Past, Present and Future, Book I” album in 1996, was addressed to “the people” in an effort to promote equality, justice, and peace. The Jewish were angered by the lyrics in the fifth verse of the song because phrases such as “Jew me” and “Kike me” where used. Today, when you listen to the song, those parts have been changed to sound like “do me” and “strike me.” According to Michael Jackson.ru, “Later these words are masked by sound effects, and History is reissued with a new version of “They Don’t Care About Us.” The original version of the album is a collector’s item today,” (Sirosh). Even if he did not mean it, the words were very strong and referred to a painful time period in history. When Michael says, “Jew me” he is really saying gas me or kill me like the Germans did to the Jews. The word kike is an offensive slang word, used to describe Jews. Those were strong statements and many Jewish people felt aggrieved. Jackson’s word choice did not advocate what he was after. While the song was supposed to help resolve conflict, it actually created conflict because the message was misconstrued by the public. Throughout his song “Black or White,” he brings up the issue of racial discrimination. In the song he repeats in the refrain, “It don't matter if you're black or white” (Jackson). He wanted to create a song that would leave an impact and this line definitely met that goal. Not only did he meet a goal, but he brought to realization that it didn’t matter who you were, whether you were crippled, gay, atheist, anything, it was all in the eyes of the beholder.

The song talks about how African Americans have done all this work for the white men but they don’t receive any repayment for it. Memphis disc jockey Dewey Phillips found the cut and played it on his radio show a few weeks later. He received calls all over from people, mostly white, who wanted to hear more. He quickly located the musician and brought him into the studio for an interview, audiences were shocked to learn that Elvis was white (Bertrand 46). Elvis’s music brought black music into white mainstream pop culture almost overnight. The breakthrough of Elvis happening almost simultaneously with the dawn of the Civil Rights Movement was no accident. As any scholar of the humanities would tell you that often times after a great war there exists a time of enlightenment, prosperity and reformation. One such cultural revival took place in this nation after the closing of the Second World War. The progressive thought of the ‘50s nurtured new ideas and cultures including the Civil Rights Movement and the fast spread of rock and roll. In an essay entitled “Color” written to Esquire magazine in 1962 the essayist James Baldwin describes the revival of white culture after WWII with the following passage:

Another example is when Ms. Melodie says, “The violence in rap must cease and seckle.” (Self Destruction) This lyric points out the violent culture that exists in the rap community and how it can be detrimental to society. Many modern hip-hop and rap songs with messages get dismissed either due to the harsh language or because many people do not want to hear the harsh realities of the African American struggle. Another unique aspect of this song that appeals to the audience is the point of focus. “Self Destruction” focuses on an internal view of the issues and relies on self-examination in order to solve these issues. One of my reasons is that I like his voice and performance as well as his songs, as both "Michael Jackson" and "Jackson Five". When Michael was eleven years old, their first single CD, "I Want You Back", was released, and it was a very big hit all over the world. Michael was still little and cute, but his voice was very vigorous and rhythmical. His songs make me happy and energetic.
