This is the story of my son Michael Angelo Hereu, He was born at 23 weeks (5 months) with E-coli and spent 7 months in the hospital. Finally after 5 operations on July 27, 2011 he was released from the hospital and went home to begin a very long road of therapy. Michael has had 3 more operations since being out of the hospital and in his short life (currently 4 years old). Michael is going to need lots of more therapy to just be able to sit on his own and to eventually be able to stand and walk. We, as his parents, fight with this every day and help him in the best way we know how, that is why we are asking for your assistance, in helping him continue his journey to being as independent as possible. Michael has been in therapy since he discharged
Amy Widener is a real estate agent, mother of two, and a sepsis survivor. In 2013 Amy was in the best shape of her life. She had just finished a Disney half marathon and was reaping the benefits of her intense training, little did she know that that training was going to save her life. One night she woke up with extreme abdominal pain and was rushed to the emergency room where she learned that she had a kink in her intestines. They performed emergency surgery and released her after a little bit of recovery. Instead of Amy’s pain getting better with recovery after her surgery, it got worse. This resulted in subsequent trips to the E.R. only to be sent home with more and more antibiotics. Two months after her surgery she went into the emergency
...At that time physical therapy was recommended. Erin eventually learned how to roll over, sit up on her own, and walk all through physical therapy. However these milestones were significantly delayed and her balance was always off. Erin took a horrific fall off the couch and landed on her forehead. She was still swollen from the “allergic reaction” from the previous month. A CT-Scan showed no bone fractures but the goose-egg that had developed took months to go away. In 2008 she officially diagnosed with FOP.

Graziano’s article over the handling of his son’s disability in the classroom also involves issues that relate to teachers detecting signs of mental illness in the classrooms, how teachers identify a behavioral troubled child, and training school counselors on the Section 504 policy that are all happening in the world today. Realizing these issues can help parents with giving their child the best out of their education and can also help teachers understand the importance of their relationship with students. Everyone should have the opportunity for a brighter future and having a learning disability should not be the end of the road for any student.
In Junot Diaz’s The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao, he is telling the story of a Dominican family but mainly about the son, Oscar de Leon. The book opens with the story of Oscar as a child and him having two girlfriends at the same time. The older people in town see him as a ladies man and encourage him. The boy and the two girls all break up and his life seemed to be on a steady decline since then. He grows up to become a nerdy, fat, and awkward adolescence with few friends and even less interest from girls. This phase persists throughout his life and he never develops out of the nerdy boy he was as a child. The Dominican Republic was a hostile and poor place during the time of the novel. The dictator Trujillo controls the lives of the people in the country. This influenced the de Leon family’s present and future. Diaz develops the story by using the superstition, the cane field, and male dominance of the Dominican men
I was in the fourth grade crying and waiting for her, hoping she would be okay. All I remember is being so scared for her, fearing that I might have to grow up without a mother. She came out of surgery and was perfectly fine. She was left with an ileostomy bag, which is a bag attached to the small intestine on the lower right quadrant of the abdomen. That was one of the coolest things I have ever gotten to witness. Who else can say they have seen their mom’s small intestine? She went back to the hospital six months later and had it repaired on January 26th, 2009. She is perfectly healthy now and I thank the Lord every day for

Difficulty with independent functioning impacts overall outcomes for individuals with developmental disabilities. The National Research Council identified the development of independent skills for students with disabilities as one of the six recommended areas for intervention and instruction (Hume & Reynolds, 2010). Individuals with autism spectrum disorders (ASD), and other developmental disabilities often rely on the presence of an adult to remain engaged or to complete activities, (Stamer and Schreibman, 1992). Hume, Loftin and Lantz, (2009), indicated that adults with ASD, despite IQ scores above 50, rely heavily on others for support in employment, daily living, and relationships. Promoting independent engagement and performance of classroom activities and decreasing dependence on adults is an important objective when teaching students with disabilities (Hall, McClannahan, & Krantz, 1995). Some of the most successful interventions targeting increased independent skills in students with developmental disabilities emphasize a shift in stimulus control from continuous adult management during instruction to an alternative stimulus. Stimulus control refers to a verbal, physical or gestural prompt from another individual. This shift in stimulus control is vital in increasing student independence across settings (Hume, Loftin, Lantz, 2009). This shift increases their independence by transferring reliance on an individual to an alternative stimulus such as a visual support. This alternative support can then transition across environments and grows with the student as they progress through their education. One method of shifting this stimulus is structured teaching. I asked Mr. Brown if he received the support from his loved ones to recover and his response was intriguing. He stated that his parents and siblings and everyone around him supported him in every way, without them he would have ended up in a complete opposite way from where he is now. This was not it, furthermore, he also mentioned how our culture had imprinted a negative view of people with disabilities. This next quote Mr. Brown mentioned; I feel like not only does it show the struggles of disabled people but also anyone who is different from society standards, “the awful thing is that people see your disability before seeing you” (Brown). Mr. Brown clarify that people
