Family is an important topic in the book, one example is how Danny and Uno become more like family than friends. and the book uses emotions/feelings in this novel to convey the theme of family. And ultimately, Matt de la Pena teaches us that true friends feel more like family than friends even if they were Emmys at first. And they will do anything for each other and help each other out! Uno and Danny started out hating each other but later they become friends when they start the hustle (the hustle is them betting on Danny striking people out). When they first met at the derby Uno was throwing balls wildly at Danny during stick ball and it hit Danny stick/bat in a scent spot and it went flying. Uno starts to care for Danny and brings him to his secret spot on the train tracks. Danny and Uno were near an unfinished liquor store floor at night time. Danny starts digging his nails in his arm like no one can see him do it, then Uno smacks his shoulder to get him to stop (140). This helps support the idea of best friends feeling more like family, because they start caring for you and start making sure you're safe and not in danger. like how Uno sees Danny dig his nail in his arm, Uno smacks his shoulder to stop him. Uno asked him if he needed to head back home and Danny said no, so Uno asked if he wanted to go by the tracks he knew. Uno brings Danny to his secret spot at the tracks and they play a karma game to give themselves good luck (142). This also shows the idea of family because Uno starts trusting Danny enough to bring him to his favorite spot. and the only other person he had brought there was Manny, that feels like family to Uno. Danny and Uno get closer and Uno starts caring more for Danny like family and decides to bring him to his secret spot. And they
