Mental illness in Australia is prevalent in younger generations from age 19 to 25. The women are affected more than the men are. Mental health problems are not adequately addressed in Australia. Hence, new steps and more focus is needed in mental care department (landstedt et al., 2016).The children in Australia are at a high risk of developing mental illness in adulthood. A survey was made to evaluate the reasons and prevalence of the mental illness in the children or from infancy. Since early childhood, there is a chance of 51.7% of mental illness. The reasons determined can be modified. The reasons include the behavioral aspect of the parents. Risk increases with smoking and alcohol consumption by the mother. Mental illness is seen from infancy. The children are at a higher risk of developing the mental illness in adulthood. Mental illness is a serious problem because its awareness is limited. The illness at times is used as a way of labeling people. The wrong conception of people in a community about mental illness gives rise to stigma. The stigma makes the patient or victim more vulnerable and depressed. Rude behavior of people, avoidance, and humiliation, results in self-stigma. The stigma harms the victim by restricting it to seek help or be open about the problems. The pharmacists are the first group of people that a patient encounters. The behavior of pharmacists has major effects on the consumers with mental illness. Much of the self-stigma and the adverse effects of public stigma depend upon the interaction between the consumer and the pharmacists. Australia has developed two important strategies or training programs to resolve the issue for improving the mental health of the people. Mental health first aid or MHFA is a training program for the pharmacists. In this program, the pharmacists are trained how to behave and help consumers with mental illness. Pharmacists encounter such customers more than anyone else does. PACFA is another development which addressees this issue. It is a federal organization in
In the United States alone, 57.7 million individuals suffer from mental illness. These illnesses range anywhere from mood disorders to anxiety disorders or to personality disorders and so on (The Numbers Count: Mental Disorders in America). 18 to 25 year olds make up about 30% of these individuals alone (Survey Finds Many Living with Mental Illness Go Without Treatment). These individuals require care from medication to psychiatry or even to confinement. However, of these 57.7 million individuals with mental illness, studies have found that less than one in three of these individuals receive proper treatment (Studies Say Mental Illness Too Often Goes Untreated).

Mental Health treatment disparities amongst under-class white and African American women. Mental health used to be a taboo topic to discuss in public, or even to the people closest to you. Now it is becoming more acceptable to talk about some aspects of the once controversial topic. Everywhere people look now they are being constantly reminded about how important mental health awareness is, whether it be a suicide prevention hotline posters, celebrities raising awareness on social media, or even in movies. Mental Health is an upcoming social topic that is rightfully becoming more socially acceptable to discuss rather than sweep it under the rug. It is very important that awareness is being practiced whether it be for more common illnesses like depression , or something more serious like schizophrenia it is important that people are educated about mental illnesses so they know how to cope with them, and treat them Although the solution sounds easy it isn't because not everyone has equal access to mental health treatment. There are invisible barriers in the way for some people when it comes to access to mental health treatment. Race and class are two variables that are huge
Improving Mental Health Care in America Akua Amponsah-Adjei James Madison University Abstract Mental health is a state of effective performance of mental function. Mental illnesses are among the most common causes of disability in the United States. Mental illness provides a difficult set of challenges to society, the health care system and social institutions. Access to quality mental health care services is important for promoting and maintaining health, safety and achieving health equity for all Americans.
There are so many types of mental illnesses that affect people every day. When some people think of mental illnesses they think of the ones that would cause people to have physical symptoms as well, but that’s untrue, there are many more that you would never know anyone has if you were to see them on the street. As defined by the 2008 encyclopedia “a mental illness is any disease of the mind or brain that seriously affects a person’s ability or behavior. Symptoms of a mental illness may include extreme moods, such as excessive sadness or anxiety, or a decreased ability to think clearly or remember well.” A mentally ill person has severe symptoms that damage the person’s ability to function in everyday activities and situations. Every nation and every economic level can be affected by a mental illness. In the United States alone about 3% of the population has severe mental illness and to add to that number about 40% of people will experience a type of mental illness at least once in their lives. Some cases of mental illnesses can go away on their own, but some cases are so severe that they require professional treatment. There is so much more available to help people recover from their symptoms than in the past.
Health is a complex concept, and when we talk about health we refer to body health and to the health of the mind, the health of relationships between us and those around us, the spiritual health. Looking online on one of the additional resources recommended, www.nimh.nih.gov, I have noticed that one of the symptoms of most diseases that affect a person's mental health is lack of sleep. Lack of sleep not only worsens man's mental health, but also causes serious imbalances in metabolism, immunity, general mood, and last but not least, affects the ability of learning and memorizing among students. The sleep fulfills a number of vital functions for both our mind and body. We spend about a third of our lives sleeping, which is a valuable and useful
The development of mental health policy has gone through many changes in the course of the twentieth century. Today, mental health policy is totally different from the policy hundreds of years ago. Because of this, it is important to emphasize the fact that mental health policy has shifted from the indifference and isolation of people with mental illness, to the delivery of social services and community integration. In other words, mental health policy has experienced a serious change that has changed the attitude of policy makers, health care professionals, ordinary people, and also to people with a mental illness. Today, people with mental health problems are no longer outsiders as they used to be. Instead they are seen as people who have different needs and social geared towards their integration into the community. The federal government now has a policy that addresses the problems faced by people with mental illness, gives the community a chance to understand these people, and sets a standard in providing mental health services. There are over seventy actions in The Federal Mental Health Action Agenda. “It offers an unprecedented opportunity to fundamentally alter the form and function of the mental health service delivery system in this country to one that puts individuals-adults with mental illnesses, children with emotional disturbances, and family members-at its very core” (The Federal Action Agenda: First Steps. Web. 24 Mar. 2014).
According to the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) (2012), it has been reported “70% of mental health problems have their onset during childhood or adolescence”. Mental health occurs during adolescence, which is when education is most crucial. Those individuals who do not seek help when it is crucial will result in an interrupted study and may not complete their education. Without educational achievement, individuals may face poverty, isolation, and deteriorating mental health issues (Canadian Mental Health Association, 2014). People with serious mental illness face numerous barriers in their life.
Public protection remains priority however prison/custody may not be an appropriate environment for somebody with a mental health issue (Bradley, 2009). Similarly a mentally disordered individual displays a dilemma when they are bought into contact with the Criminal Justice System (Durcan, Graham, 2014). Under the prevision of the Mental Health Act (1983) if an individual is detained under section 135 or 136 of the Mental Health Act they can be taken to a place to be assessed usually this is a prison cell (Durcan, Graham, 2014). It may be argued that by doing this the individual taken into custody under section 136 can exacerbate a mental illness making an individual increasingly vulnerable with heightening self-harm and suicide ideation (Murphy and Wales 2013). It may
Policy Description The goal of Mental Health First Aid Act aims to increase participants ’knowledge about mental health in general as well as about common disorders (e.g., depression, anxiety, psychosis, substance abuse, self-harm, suicidal behaviours) and available treatment options. Another aim is to reduce stigma surrounding mental disorders, as negative attitudes have an adverse impact on supportive and help-seeking behaviours (Hadlaczky, et.al., 2014 as cited in Kitchener & Jorm, 2006). The Act is designed to give ordinary people the skills to help someone developing a mental health problem or experiencing a mental health crisis. A tenet of the course is early intervention to prevent mental illness from developing into something more severe.
Over the past 50 years, there have been significant transformations towards the family model. In particular, new impacts are emerging that are greatly affecting children’s physical and mental health and wellbeing. Health has many social, physical, emotional and mental dimensions, which can be seen in the family matters overview of child well-being (OECD, 2016). Advancements in medicine, nutrition and healthcare as well as safer environments have allowed individuals to lead healthier and longer lives. According to the OECD (2016), research over the past decade has indicated a significant decline in tobacco and alcohol consumption, suicide rates, and accidental deaths amongst young Australians.
Every time a large shooting event is talked about, everyone only talks about the gun and laws on buying and owning a gun. People (politicians mostly) gloss over the fact that most times mental health/disorders are involved. No one wants to talk about mental health due to the sigma of it and how everyone is scared of it due to no real education on the topic. Many times the people who need the most help never get help they need due to the stigma of mental health/ disorders. An example is how if someone has something wrong mentally with them, they become pariahs if they talk about it. Because of the stigma and treatment problems, mental health/ disorders stigmas and treatment must change to be able to help more people.
Mental disorders are rapidly becoming more common with each new generation born in the world. Currently, nearly one in two people suffer from some form of depression, anxiety, or other mental health problem at some point in their lives (Editor). With so many people suffering from their mental illnesses, steps have been taken in order to get help needed for these people but progress has been slow. In the medical world, hospitals are treating those with physical problems with more care than those with mental problems. Prescription drugs can only do so much helping the mentally ill go through their daily lives and more should be done to help those who need more than medicine to cope with their illness. Mental health should be considered just as important as physical health because of how advanced physical healing is, how the public reacts to those with mental illness, and due to the consequences that could happen if the illness is not correctly helped.
Around 20% of the world's children and adolescents have mental disorders. Similar types of disorders are being reported regardless of culture. Most conditions were caused by biological, psychological and environmental factor. In this era, mental disorder is common especially in teens.
Today, the numbers of people with mental health issues are considerably high. The problem increases the national and global social and economic burdens as governments try to find means of empowering the people with the issue and solve the problem. Today, one in five adults in the United States has a mental health problem (“Mental Health Facts,” 2016). “Mental Health Facts” (2016) also states that the adults that received mental health services are about 60%. Only 50% of the youth with mental health issues received mental health services in the previous year. Further, mental health issues are also related to drug use and addiction. Of all the mental illnesses and disorders, depression affects the most people and has the biggest burden globally. Due to the increasing burden and the gap in service utilization, the mental health policy seeks to address several factors. Some of the key issues to address include early diagnosis of mental disorders, provision of appropriate and adequate intervention a particular problem, education and counseling for the family members, and research to help reduce the numbers and reverse the trend. Another key area of focus is the use of mass media to create awareness about mental health issues and help clear the
