Many strategies can contribute to young people’s mental health promotion based on literacy review and blog findings. First, building healthy public policy is essential as health promotion goes beyond a focus on individuals. Promoting mental health requires assessing the health of targeting population and providing assurance for health care. Social policies, such as reducing poverty and financial stress of families are the key issues for preventing mental and behavioral disorders among young people. Policy makers may invite health institution or agency to participate in national projects, thereby developing new policy to improve practice in the mental health field. Second, developing personal skills and strengthening family can act as a buffer against adversity and psychological disorders. Building individual resilience may include building hope, coping, optimism, and promoting interpersonal skills. This aims to enhance the capacity of …show more content…
Our project aims to engage young people in promoting mental health from a primary prevention perspective. Supportive environment helps available professionals such as doctors, nurses, teachers and journalists to recognize and respond to the early signs of mental illness with evidence-based strategies and the capacity to deliver effective interventions. Their targeted mental health promotion programs increase the knowledge and skills of young people who are under situational stress. The common goal of mental health promotion for young people is to create healthy, safe, supportive environments to promote their personal well-being, satisfying family and interpersonal relationships, and positive contributions to community or society. Therefore, mental health promotion for young people has required not only building healthy policy, and individual resilience, but also more than creating supportive

Mental Health Funding Mental health is a subject a lot of people prefer not to talk about, which is a main reason that it is so underfunded. The severe underfunding affects not only the people suffering from mental illness, but also the government, the economy, and society as a whole. It is in the government's best interest to put more funding into mental health due to the health consequences on patients, including weight issues, drastic effects on bodily functions, and difficulties in pregnancy. As well as this
It would be relevant for public health agencies and education to incorporate mental health promotion into chronic disease prevention efforts, conduct and research to progress the evidence base about mental health in the United States, along with collaborate partnerships to develop comprehensive mental health plans to enhance coordination of care in our society (CDC,
There are so many types of mental illnesses that affect people every day. When some people think of mental illnesses they think of the ones that would cause people to have physical symptoms as well, but that’s untrue, there are many more that you would never know anyone has if you were to see them on the street. As defined by the 2008 encyclopedia “a mental illness is any disease of the mind or brain that seriously affects a person’s ability or behavior. Symptoms of a mental illness may include extreme moods, such as excessive sadness or anxiety, or a decreased ability to think clearly or remember well.” A mentally ill person has severe symptoms that damage the person’s ability to function in everyday activities and situations. Every nation and every economic level can be affected by a mental illness. In the United States alone about 3% of the population has severe mental illness and to add to that number about 40% of people will experience a type of mental illness at least once in their lives. Some cases of mental illnesses can go away on their own, but some cases are so severe that they require professional treatment. There is so much more available to help people recover from their symptoms than in the past.
Mental health disparities, “the power imbalances that impact practices influencing access, quality, and outcomes of behavioral health care, or a significant disparity in the overall rate of disease incidence, prevalence, morbidity, mortality, or survival rate in a specific group of people defined along racial and ethnic lines, as compared with the general population” (Safran, 2011). Although there are many mental health care dipartites, I’m going to focus on the impact of poverty and lack of attention given to mental health. By advocating for a prevention, promotion, and intervention related to mental health, will aid in minimizing mental health disparities. Not only is it important to advocate on a macro level, but it is important to educate
As a child, I have always sought to help others either by helping the elderly, listening to a friend in need or simple giving advice based on my own experiences. But, although this is a passion of mine, I do not currently possess the educational experience nor the tools necessary to be an effective counselor. During my high school years, I lived in a predominantly white neighborhood in Belleville, Illinois and with that came many challenges as well as stereotypes that affected not only myself but other students. Many of the people as well as the police were very prejudice toward minorities within the community. I witnessed burning crosses, often stopped by police or other authorities for simply
These minor children need guidance and support in order to sustain a healthy lifestyle. By informing them of these programs, mental health awareness, and relational stability can have a positive impact on their mental health risks. Apa.org stated that “Psychologists have also designed programs that effectively engage families, schools and communities, that is, the critical social supports that can guarantee lasting well-being for children and youth” (2017). This can create positive factors that will help them engage in better mental health over all with their most common social
Young people are unintentionally vulnerable when it comes to mental health development causing them to at times make unreasonable decisions. This is why we have laws and restrictions that keep adolescents from voting, entering legal ...
Strengthening Family Resilience Family resilience can be described as the successful coping of family members under adversity that enables support and cohesion within the family (Walsh, 2006). According to the research, resilient families typically have many of the following protective factors: positive outlook, spirituality, family member accord, flexibility, family communication, financial management, family time, shared recreation, routines and rituals, and outside support networks (Walsh, 2003). These protective factors not only serve as a function within the family structure, but are a factor in the therapeutic process. The family resilience perspective in therapy shifts away from a deficit-based lens that views struggling families as
Maintaining mental health and wellness is a rather complex task- and the possible problems associated with mental health can be rather debilitating depending on their severity. Mental health is described as including the emotional and behavioral areas of health and is crucial to a given child's well being. More over, mental health can vastly impact various areas of life including, personal relationships, work and school and physical health. The prevalence of mental health issues among the United States' children is vast and is seemingly increasing. Data from the 2005-2006 National Health Interview Survey indicated that about 8.3 million children
An article titled, “Increasing Awareness of Child Mental Health Issues Among Elementary School Staff”, piloted a study that tests the effectiveness of a training that is designed to be a component to a school-based mental health interventions. Teachers’ and school staff are around children the majority of the day, and without appropriate training are less likely to be able to recognize mental health concerns and make appropriate referrals to meet the students’ needs. The article’s hypothesis focuses on the overall effectiveness of this new mental health training, which hopes in increase school staff members’ awareness of the seven most common mental health conditions among children, with the goal of this increased knowledge
The topic that I choose is mental health education for teenagers in school. Mental health is a person’s condition with regard to their psychological and emotional well-being. In schools we have classes focusing upon the physical and educational well-being of students but has ignored the mental well-being. The lack of mental health education results in people not knowing how to properly interact with mental illness both in others and with themselves. Not only is the knowledge of how to deal with mental illness an issue but the stigmatization that has derived from the lack of understanding creates a negative environment in confronting these illnesses.
It is deeply alarming that ignoring mental health is systematically ignored as an important part of health promotion. This is shocking because, in theory, mental health is recognized as an important component of health, the close link between physical and mental health is recognized, and it is generally known that physical and mental health share many of the same social, environmental and economic components. We know that facilities dedicated to those with mental health problems are more vulnerable to the resources of physical diseases in many parts of the world, and it is essential that mental health promotion should not be equally affected
Mental health affects everyone of all age groups and ethnicities and has become a major player in determining the health of an individual. Nurses specialized in mental health have a crucial role to promote the highest potential quality of mental health of an individual especially for those in low-income region. Health promotion strategies that can be used to help with increasing the quality mental health are developing a healthy lifestyle by promoting physical activity, increasing mental health awareness resulting to a decrease in stigma and increasing mental health education. There are many challenges that mental health still has today but because of the rise of an aging population, mental health will become a leading problem resulting to
Today, the numbers of people with mental health issues are considerably high. The problem increases the national and global social and economic burdens as governments try to find means of empowering the people with the issue and solve the problem. Today, one in five adults in the United States has a mental health problem (“Mental Health Facts,” 2016). “Mental Health Facts” (2016) also states that the adults that received mental health services are about 60%. Only 50% of the youth with mental health issues received mental health services in the previous year. Further, mental health issues are also related to drug use and addiction. Of all the mental illnesses and disorders, depression affects the most people and has the biggest burden globally. Due to the increasing burden and the gap in service utilization, the mental health policy seeks to address several factors. Some of the key issues to address include early diagnosis of mental disorders, provision of appropriate and adequate intervention a particular problem, education and counseling for the family members, and research to help reduce the numbers and reverse the trend. Another key area of focus is the use of mass media to create awareness about mental health issues and help clear the
