Dear Senator Briese,
My name is Kristen Serna and I reside in Dannebrog (68831), Nebraska. I am currently a college student at the University of Nebraska at Kearney and nearing the end of my junior year. I am majoring in Social Work with a Women’s and Gender Study minor.
I am writing to you to ask that you help put social workers in every school Education Service Unit (ESU) by supporting Bill LB998. As you may know coming from the small-populated district of 41 that there are many schools that lack many resources. By supporting Bill LB998 and allowing social workers to go into each ESU would create impact for students, family, schools, community, but most importantly it would make a positive influence on our district. Examples include, but not limited to, provide mental health services, behavioral health services, increase grade averages, higher rates of graduation, higher rates of continuing education, catching child abuse, providing more community
Mental illness in the classroom has become an issue that is important for teachers, not just parents, to look out for. According to Cinda Johnson, “Studies indicate that 1 in 5 adolescents have some sort of serious emotional, behavioral, or mental health problem”(Johnson). When adolescents spend half of their days in school, it is important that their teachers take the time to notice unusual signs their students may be showing them. Teachers have the opportunity and the influence to help students work toward a better future. In Graziano’s article, however, the teacher’s influence was spun the wrong way and led to mistreatment of the six-year-old boy and his learning disability. Johnson explains, “Effective teachers are “responsive to students’ problems and…emphasize reciprocity and the value of their students’ perspectives and feelings”(Johnson). The issue of disability in the classroom coincides with the issue of teacher and student trust in the classroom. In both articles there...
Money will not solve or make this problem go away, no matter how many social workers are hired. Schools will succeed despite their financial circumstances if they have the basic components of motivated students, parent support, caring teachings, and strong central leadership. While this is the typical model of a suburban school system, Wilson High School proves that it can work anywhere. When ones thinks of urban public schools, overcrowded classes, underpaid teachers, and a lack of resources often come to mind. The fact is these problems can happen anywhere. While the environment at Kennedy could never be compared to the worst DC high school, the assumptions made against these schools are the same. By erasing these notions and confronting the problems one by one, we will be one step closer to reaching equal education for all.
The professional position I aim to obtain next is Behavioral Health Worker. A Behavioral Health Worker in most cases will implement specific school based behavioral plans, track measurable objectives, and communicate progress through notes, reports and supervision. As a general overview Behavioral Health workers perform these task as key roles and responsibilities. Behavioral Health Worker also provides behavior management support, emotional support and psychological rehabilitative activities to children and adolescents within a wide range of disabilities. They provide interventions to a children or adolescents at schools when the behavior without intervention would require a more restrictive treatment or education setting. Behavioral Health Workers assists teacher and or unique caregiver with implementation of behavioral plans. Other functions of this position are supervise/monitor activities of child/adolescent in accordance with the behavioral plan with the emphasis on prevention rather than intervention and prevent crisis situation however when necessary deescalate children in crisis.
School psychologists are using a technique called reform or restructuring, which is assisting the students to become better learners. According to the book Collaborative Consultation in the Schools, a school consultation is a process for providing psychological and educational services in which a specialist (consultant) works cooperatively with a staff member (consultee) to improve the learning and adjustment of a student (client) or group of students. Their goals and objectives can help give direction to the ways they can be of assistance to teachers in terms of methods, curriculum reinforcement systems, parental support, and classroom management issues. Although the teachers are at the center of the debate over how much weight should be given to student achievement within a performance assessment and what measures or indicators best represent student growth, the school psychologist and other related services personnel recognize that they will soon be compell...
By the end of my sophomore year, psychology had captivated my interest. It was not until my senior year that I realized exactly which direction I wanted to take in the pursuit of this discipline. I focused my interest into the realms of social work; where I could develop intervention strategies (“IS”) that may help alleviate stressors, promote motivation within the classroom context, and facilitate better child-parent and student-teacher relations. My interests and experience make me a uniquely qualified candidate for, and asset to, the Masters in Social Work Program at the University of Washington. I feel the pursuit of this field will give me the knowledge and skills I need to be a high quality school social worker.
Prisons act as a total institution where inmates are put on a strict schedule and fall under one of the most gruesome forms of social control. Because of this, many inmates rebel resulting in prisons having to increase security and impose stricter punishments. As a result of this, less effort has been put into helping mentally ill inmates. The term panopticon, coined by Bentham illustrates the concept that the prison design would allow guards to see into cells but not allowing prisoners to see out. Thus, this would allow guards to have omniscient power over the inmates. Fortunately, this never worked as a prison, however prison has created a type of mental health panopticon. This allows for mentally ill parents to feel like they are always being observed; similarly to that of an experiment. Despite prisons best attempt to equally serve all inmates to the best of their ability, prioritizing security and punishment has lead to a mental health panopticon. As a result, prisons environments have exacerbated negative behaviours, created an inhumane environment for prisoners and lack the means to aid in mental health.
The grant requires that three main goals are met. These three goals are? (a) implement an assessment-based, results-driven, comprehensive school counseling program that will serve as a catalyst and model for expansion throughout the district; (b) increase the social and emotional competencies and academic achievement of all students; and (c) minimize the barriers and increase resilience for the students who are at higher risk of school failure.
The policy analysis is based on the increasing numbers of cases on mental health issues in college and university campuses. The topic is supported by evidential data collected from various studies and peer-reviewed articles that show the statistical prevalence of the most common forms of mental health issues seen among the students, which shows that the prevalence rate is ever-increasing. The methodologies recommended for implementation include increased availability of resources and facilitating the accessibility of these resources through overcoming barriers. Some policy options have been suggested for consideration and recommendations have been made accordingly. The fiscal impact has also been considered and suggestions
Social policies are regulations, procedures and principles that affect the living conditions in favor of human welfare. They are in place to improve and change problems seen in society. One such problem is the mentally ill population being placed in prisons for criminal activities. Mentally ill can be defined as any medical condition that interrupts a person’s intelligence, disposition, capability to communicate with others, feelings and basic daily activities. The prisons in United States are overly represented with people suffering from mental illness.
School counseling has evolved over the years into a significant component of the educational system. School counselors are taking on new roles in schools as leaders, working with “school administration and staff in developing student attitudes and behavior which are necessary to maintain proper control, acceptable standards of self-discipline and a suitable learning environment within the school” (Secondary School Counselor 2012). Counselors work in “diverse community settings designed to provide a variety of counseling, rehabilitation, and support services” (Counselors, 2010). When working in a school district as a counselor, you can either be an elementary school counselor, middle school counselor or a high school counselor. This essays explores a recent interview with a high school counselor.
My current job as a Behavioral Intervention Specialist for Bakersfield City School District has motivated me to pursue my masters in social work. Working with troubled students on a daily basis has allowed me to see the great need for social workers at schools. Many students are not successful in school due to their emotional and social issues in their daily lives. I want to be a professional social worker so I can better understand behavior, trauma, and learn of more ways to assist the students at my school. I truly feel The Master of Social Work (MSW) program will prepare me to help create that change in the schools that is desperately needed.
There is no greater time to create a platform to discuss the overhaul of a system of care such as the mental health system in America. Over the past 2 decades, the increase of violent acts in our communities have been attributed to the untreated and abandoned individuals who suffer from mental illness. Despite the government’s best efforts, the lapse in judgement has proven to be devastating to our community and change is a necessary component for intervention and prevention. The purpose of this manuscript’s existence is to bring to light to this overlooked correlation and identify solutions that will be effective and practical.
Currently in today’s society, coming out as gay is easier than admitting to a serious mental problem. This effect puts a burden on teens who suffer from problems and don’t know where to go; which led to the increase of teen suicides as seen in the media. In the average classroom size, about three of the twenty-four students have depression; not mentioning other common disorders such as bipolar disorder, panic disorder, ADHD, conduct disorder, and eating disorders. Without better programs in schools to prevent and inform about mental disorders, the current taboo on them, the bullying of students suffering, and the romanticization of diseases will continue to increase the negative effect mental disorders have on teens.
Mental illness is a preventable and treatable illness that is experienced by a large number of people worldwide, but disproportionately affects people of color and individuals in poverty. Mental illness does not just affect those who are diagnosed with a mental illness but it also has an impact on those around the individual, including family and friends. However, the impact does not stop there; it affects all of society economically and potentially socially. An estimated 450 million people suffer from mental illness worldwide; as well as one in four people will experience one or more mental illnesses in their lifetime (World Health Organization, 2007). This means that a quarter (25%) of people in the world will have experienced mental illness at some point in their lives but may have recovered from their mental illness. In addition to that, the United States of America has the highest lifetime rate of mental health issues of any of the 17 industrialized countries, according to an epidemiological study done by the World Health Organization (WHO) (2007). Additional data shows that the United States has the second highest poverty rate out of 21 wealthy countries as well as having significantly high rates of income and wealth inequality, which is shown to be one of the highest risk factors for mental health problems (Shea & Shern, 2011, p. 5).
