Nature is the inherent state of human existence on earth before transformation. Nurture is a way through which social world influences human nature and desires and made them learned. Also, nature simply signifies biological or genetic while nurture refers to environmental influences and socialization. The factors that determine who we are and how we behave are both environmental and sociological and biological factors. Concerning the consequences of biology and social systems on human beings and behavior, nature vs. nurture discussion has been a long-standing deliberation. Both genetic and environmental factors are believed to cause mental illnesses. This blood relations can be their parents or great grandparents, and other antecedents. Certain genes increase the risk of developing a mental illness and stress may stimulate it. In addition, while in the uterus, environmental exposures (nurture) which include environmental stressors, inflammatory conditions, toxins, alcohol or drugs can be related to mental illness. The author of politics of biology, Wray Herbert stated, “behavioral geneticists suspect that several genes may underlie the illness, and that some environmental stress--perhaps a virus or birth complications--also might be required to trigger the disorder.” This shows that both the genes (nature) and environment (nurture) plays a role in causing mental illnesses. Another article from psychology today suggests that a type of mental illness (personality disorder) is caused by both genetic component and specific environmental factors.
