No matter what kind of education a woman has in the United States, males’ salaries are always higher. Even though both parties have the same qualifications, males are paid more because that is how America society is. Throughout history, many individuals believe that because of influential, intellectual and sophisticated men are responsible for how America is today. This bigoted mindset deludes that women also played an essential role in making America the way it is currently. Despite the accomplishments and success women can have, there is an economic gap between salaries. For example, in the bar graph above, the difference in income is consistent throughout. Based on how low or high the individual’s education (qualification) is, men
are paid more. As the professions increase in salary, there are not as many women in the field and this leads to an even greater gap in income. Education does assist in widening the income gap between males and females and also between races. Based on how educated an individual is, depends on how high their salary is. The higher the education, the greater the salary and vice versa. However, the spectrum of pay is not equal like it should be. Although women are eligible for the same professions as men, many individuals assume that women are not capable enough at the task at hand and are not hired. In essence, the greater the demand of education, the less chance of women being hired. It is how the United States is. Assuming women are not able to accomplish something and not giving them the opportunity to prove themselves. This reason leads many women to work low income jobs because the difference in pay in higher paying jobs is very distinguishable. The inequality of income not only plays a role in sex, but also in race as well. A white male is almost guaranteed to make more than a Black male just because of the difference in skin color. As previously stated, same qualifications occurs, but because the person is born Black has them already being paid less than someone who is considered White. As the line graph above indicates that being Black in the United States means having a lower salary. As compared to Whites who are paid considerably higher than those who are Black. The graph illustrates the difference between races. Essentially that being Black in the United States is challenging when trying to make a living for oneself and family. Companies and business decide whether or not who’s paid more and for a majority of the time pay Black’s less. It is not visibly seen in most cases, but some companies have a sort of institutionalize discrimination against those who are not considered White.
Though any pay disparity between women and men is a pressing issue, the “wage gap” is much more complicated than people believe because of misleading statistics, unaccounted for variables, and the different social and economic choices of men and women. The reality of wage differences between men and women is that above all changes women continue to earn less than men. According to the 7th grade middle school Language Arts class of St.Pius X Catholic School, some people agree that Professional Athletes are paid too much. Furthermore athletes are paid too much because a normal job, as I said, make a fraction of what real jobs make like a doctor and doctors take real risks.
When President John F. Kennedy signed the Equal Pay Act of 1963 into law, he hoped that it would allow working women to finally earn the same amount of money as men; however, more than half a century later, men continue to out earn women in almost every field of work (Lipman para. 4). Male dominated fields tend to pay more than female dominated fields at similar skill levels. In 2012, women earned an average of $691 per week while men earned an average of $854 per week. Furthermore, the majority of women remain unaware that they are earning less than their male colleagues (Hegewisch para. 1).
The average full-time working woman earns only 77 cents for every dollar a man earns (Covert). Not to mention that these statistics do not derive from various salaries from different job positions that men and women hold; instead, they come from a survey of salaries that men and women earn for the exact same job position and the exact same job responsibilities. It is obvious that this disparity in the wages is simply inflicted by the stereotype that questions the competency of women. Women in no business are less capable and intelligent than men. There is no scientific study or research that has proven the fact that women are less capable in the workplace than men. Another common stereotype is that women don’t need equal pay, because they are married. The fact that men are often thought of as the primary breadwinner, and the wife’s salary is often seen as simply a supplement to the husband’s salary, and is thus justified to be a lower amount. However, this stereotype of women is certainly distorted and misleading. The truth is women are the primary breadwinners in four out of ten American families (Schulte). Not all women’s pay are supplemental to the husband’s salary; some women are, in fact, the primary provider of the family. In the country, the gender pay gap is measured as the ratio of female to males yearly earning among workers in full-time, year round (FTYR) earnings. In 2009, female FTYR earned 77% (0.77) as much as the FTYR male workers (US Census Bureau, 2013). Whoever said that women do not have the same responsibilities to maintain? What really makes a women’s work inferior to men? The answer is nothing. Today, women are depended on just as much as men, and are capable of performing at their level. However, a full-time working woman earns only seventy-seven cents for every dollar a man makes. It is very important to be concerned about the issue because it is constantly increasing throughout the United States. It upsets me that women are paid less than men because women have the same ability and work ethic as men do, but they are looked at differently. According to AAUW, women make 77 percent of what men make. This rate hasn’t changed since 2002 (Hill, 2013).
