Deciding what courses to take the first semester of college can be overwhelming for many students. The course options are virtually endless. Many students overlook a psychology course because it is not their major or does not relate to their major. Although not all students major in Psychology, the skills of psychology will allow a student to succeed in any career field. Requiring a psychology course the first semester of college aids the student in other courses and prepares students for the real world. Taking Psychology in the first semester of college will allow students to develop critical thinking skills that will assist them in their other college classes and the real world. Most college classes incorporate some form of critical thinking. …show more content…
Memorization is crucial for college classes. According to Psychology, some ways students can help memorization are to recall details, organize information, allow time to memorize, get rest, and make connections (Licht et al 251). The method of loci is a technique to memorize information that, when presented with a series of words to remember, take the words on a mental journey through a place they know well (Licht et al 247). Another way to boost memorization is to arrange the material into a hierarchy, a system of meaningful categories and subcategories (Licht et al 248). These are only two ways on how to help memorization presented in a psychology class. These tips and tricks for helping to memorize information will help students in the classes they take during and after the psychology class. Suppose a professor wants a student to memorize a list of vocabulary words for a class. The student could method of memorization presented in the course and hopefully improve a students ability to memorize the vocabulary words. If a student takes a Psychology course later in college, they may miss helpful techniques used to memorize
I would hope to allow myself to distinguish myself from other students and make myself more prevalent and outstanding in my specific classes. As I would like to purse a degree in Psychology with a minor in Criminology, I would like to become an ‘All around Psychologist’ dabbling in numerous sections of the ‘Psychology life.’ It is my belief that this HBCU would give me all mental and educational tools that will aid me in being the best in my chosen field. It is not that I do not like the educational system at my current university, it is just that i feel as though I can excel beyond measures at my new university coming this Spring.
Tests play a major role in a student’s academic career: they determine where the student goes to college, which AP classes the student will be able to take, and so on. Considering this information, it is vital to discover effective study methods that will enable students to retain the material longer and clearer. The article “Forget What You Know About Good Study Habits” by Benedict Carey presents the notion that efficacious studying must include diversity. Based upon years of scientific experiments, psychologists have been able to conclude that studying various material in various places and at spaced out intervals are better study habits than studying one subject in one sitting for a long period of consecutive time. The article is also centered
Memory is a group of related mental processes that are involved in acquiring, storing, and retrieving information (Hockenberry and Hocenberry page 232). I will be addressing two specific types of memory: short-term memory and long-term memory. Short-term memory holds temporary information transferred from sensory memory or long-term memory. Sensory memory is the first stage of memory and obtains information for a brief amount of time. Short-term memory is also called active memory and is stored in the prefrontal cortex which is the most active part of the brain during an activity. Short-term memory can hold information for roughly twenty seconds, but sensory memory holds information for a shorter amount of time. We usually store things such
Altogether this study has helped us learn more about the brain and memory. Learning is measured thorough when a student can reiterate the right answer to a question. In this study, students in one conditions learned forging language vocabulary words in standard example of recurrent study exam trials. In three other conditions, once a student had correctly formed the language item, it was constantly studied but dropped from further testing. Repeatedly tested but dropped from the further study or just dropped from both the study and also the test. The results reveal the critical part of retrieval practice in combining education and shows that even college students seem naive of the fact.
Good jobs for psychology majors are available for those who have earned a bachelor's, master's and doctorate degree. Psychology courses train individuals to work effectively with others, conduct tests and assessments and correct behavioral problems. There are opportunities for psychology majors to work in clinics, schools, early childhood centers, business, health clinics, hospitals and correctional institutions.
During the half semester course of Freshman Seminar, a multitude of topics were covered, providing students with a foundation for starting and completing college successfully. These topics include time management/productivity, understanding learning styles, how to join/start college activities, planning for your academic future, and career preparation, All of which serve to guide students towards academic success. However, not all of these topics are as helpful and important as others. Being able to determine their personal helpfulness and importance is key to a student’s success in college.
My interest in psychology began when I took an Introduction to Psychology course during my freshmen year of college. The course introduced me to many concepts, such as human development, psychological disorders, and human behavior. I quickly discovered that understanding these psychological concepts would not only help me pursue a career in psychology, but also a career in many other fields. Through my experiences as an undergraduate psychology student I have gained an important understanding of research and how to use research to help other people.

During my first semester in college, when I was enrolled in Intro to Psychology (Psych 101) I established a new love for school and learning. I began so engrossed in every aspect of it that I never wanted class to end. It was from then on that I decided to pursue my B.A. in psychology. After completing three years, I realized that there is still so much knowledge to be obtained in this field. Therefore, I want to continue my education at the Queens College School of Psychology Graduate Program.
Growing up something that always concerned me was people’s behavior, why they chose one thing and not the other, why some were happy and others were not. Based on this you would assume that studying psychology was a natural response but it was not. I had reached my senior year in high school feeling unsure about what I wanted to do with the rest of my life. I remember filling out college applications and feeling reluctant over what to put down as a major. I had narrowed down my choices to history or psychology. I was afraid I would choose the wrong one and that I would finish like many other students; being unhappy in my decision and changing my major multiple times. Eventually I did chose and after three years of studying psychology I find myself feeling excited and confident about my future in this field.
It is necessary to have accurate knowledge about the world of work to make good academic and career decisions. (Nauta, n.d.). However, college students often do not have accurate knowledge of careers in their discipline. Psychology students have quite distorted perceptions of the activities conducted by clinical psychologists, counselors, and psychiatrists. (Nauta, n.d.)Upper level undergraduates had poor understanding of applied psychology. (Ellis & Cantrell, 1994)
When I was a freshman in college, I started my first semester with four basic classes, English, algebra, chemistry, and developmental psychology. Back then I did not see the significance of those classes other than the fact that I had to take them to meet general education requirements. I knew that the purpose of general education was to create a well-rounded student with a variety of skills and knowledge, but I did not understand why a nurse would need to know how to write a five page paper on the Arab Spring. Fast forward to my last semester of college and more importantly nursing school, where for the first time I am realizing how important those courses were for my nursing school career.
Memory in humans is a complex process and is divided into multiple components. Different areas of the brain are responsible for varying functions relating to memory such as short term memory and long term memory, which can further be broken down into subcategories such as emotional and semantic memory. Using fMRI, brain regions that participate in memory can be pinpointed and changes to memory that are resultant of aging or other neurological diseases and the pathology of the underlying brain structures can be detected as well.
I think psychology is an important subject that should be mandatory in high school. It teaches people to look deep within them, as well as to understand the reasons why someone might act a certain way. It gives the individual a perspective and how to look at situations from a different point of view. At least, high school students should take a class on psychology of personal effectiveness in order to learn about self-awareness and interpersonal relations that are essential in the real
The path to becoming a clinical psychologist is a long and arduous journey, but one that I believe is worth it. A bachelor’s degree in psychology is only the first small step in becoming a clinical psychologist. By obtaining a minor in sociology I will broaden my knowledge of humans and their social behavior. This, along with becoming a research assistant, will help me stand out when it comes time to apply to graduate school. When I have finally completed my master’s degree, doctoral degree, and all the tests and presentations required by Oklahoma, I will have the career I set out to get when I started at OU. That is why starting off with a bachelor’s degree in psychology, and minor in sociology is valuable to my career choice of a clinical psychologist.
