As a nation, Canada has been working hard to right the wrongs in our history. Residential schools are a part of our story, and no matter how much we wish we could right that wrong in one apology, we cannot. The impacts of this black mark on our history has gone from one generation to the next, and though we now recognize it was wrong and have said sorry, there is much more left to be done.

Many steps forward have been taken in the last decade, beginning with Prime Minister Stephen Harper's apology on behalf of all Canadians for the residential school system. The apology recognized the wrongs of forcing a child from their parents. It recognized the void that was left in many cultures of having a generation taken from the traditions, religion, language, and belonging that they should have experienced. In Manitoba alone there are hundreds of healing circles, family support groups, cultural groups and business associations all specifically created to help indigenous peoples in need.

In particular, Meet Me at the Bell Tower has done a lot of good in the North End of Winnipeg. A run down, dangerous area that many indigenous Winnipeggers call home, a group called Meet Me at the Bell Tower, created by Michael Champagne, has worked hard every week to decrease the amount of violence in the streets and provide aide to those they find in need. Every Friday at 6 p.m. the group meets next to the bell tower on Selkirk and Powers, rain or shine. From there they walk through the neighbourhood on a mission to amplify young voices, spread awareness and reduce crime.

Champagne has said that he knows the group has made a difference since it all started in 2011, stating "we got together just as many times as a community but it was at funerals, it was as hospitals, and it was at vigils," but not anymore.
