What if there was a practice that took just twenty minutes a day to completely alter the way you feel, think and interact within your social and everyday activities? A woman from England was beaten, molested and suffered traumatically from her agonizing childhood; however, she claims meditation saved her live. She states it gave her inner peace and made every problem, every negative thought and every haunting memory disappear into every moment she spent focusing on herself. Meditation is more than a cultural fad, it is an altering practice that has proven benefits on the mind, body and soul. The practice of meditating does not mean to concentrate on a point of the room, it does not a means of exercise that takes strenuous efforts, it does not take years to experience the various benefits, and it does not require a religious viewpoint or belief system. Meditation has been used by the Marine Corps to help soldiers increase their performance and improve their ability to handle stress during combat. Schools across the United States are started to test the hypothesis with their students to see if their students could maintain focus as well as alleviate stresses many students experience in a classroom. A survey conducted showed ninety-eight percent of students were eager for class as well as attendance rates spiked dramatically (Machado). The Harvard Center for the Developing Child states that meditation has the ability to minimize toxic stresses experienced in a classroom that could lead to long term disadvantages socially, academically and emotionally. Research on the participating classrooms showed a happier environment, a rise in the students’ grade point averages, improved self-control, increased a student’s awareness of actions as well as corresponding repercussions and also helped students develop social relationships
