The Transcendental Meditation technique is a simple, natural, effortless procedure practiced for any amount of time, usually 10-20 minutes in the morning and evening, while sitting comfortably with the eyes closed. During this technique, the individual's awareness settles down and experiences a unique state of restful alertness. As the body becomes deeply relaxed, the mind transcends all mental activity to experience the simplest form of awareness, Transcendental Consciousness, where consciousness is open to itself. This is the self-referral state of consciousness.
The experience of Transcendental Consciousness develops the individual's latent creative potential while dissolving accumulated stress and fatigue through the deep rest gained during the practice. This experience enlivens the individual's creativity, dynamism, orderliness, and organizing power, which result in increasing effectiveness and success in daily life.
The Transcendental Meditation technique is scientific, requiring neither specific beliefs nor adoption of a particular lifestyle. The practice does not involve any effort or concentration. It is easy to learn and does not require any special ability. People of all ages, educational backgrounds, cultures, and religions in countries throughout the world practice the technique and enjoy its wide range of benefits.

Transcendentalism to some is may just be a long, lengthy word coined two hundred years ago that is not used today, but to other people, people like Chris McCandless, it is a way of life. They use these qualities to shape their life and strive hard to follow them. Chris McCandless was so focused on embodying the qualities of transcendentalism that he failed to see how much danger he was putting himself in. He had little to no common sense as shown by Westerberg. “But there were gaps in his thinking. I remember once I went over to the house, walked into the kitchen, and noticed a god-awful stink. I mean it smelled nasty in there. I opened the microwave, and the bottom of it was filled with rancid grease. Alex had been using it to cook chicken, and it never occurred to him that the grease had to drain somewhere. It wasn’t that he was too lazy to clean it up- Alex always kept things real neat and orderly- it was just that he hadn’t noticed the grease” (Krakauer 45). McCandless embodied the values of transcendentalism by believing in living closer to nature, believing in the dignity of manual labor, and being self reliant.
Throughout the novel, Still Missing written by Chevy Stevens, the protagonist, is taken on a frightening journey of being drugged, kidnapped, sexually abused, and eventually left to fend for herself. Because of the author's unique writing style and use of first person, a sense of understanding is created for the reader's feelings and reactions. At the beginning of the novel, Annie O’Sullivan was extremely oblivious to her surrounding and would never imagine something like this ever happening. As the chapters continued, and she began to reveal what happened to her the first few days, she was unsure of what to do other than to be in complete shock, unable to react and grasp the entire situation. As the reader, I was intrigued by the ‘journey’
The Motivational Interviewing film was very informative. I was able to get a clear understanding of what is to be expected by the therapist during a session. The film explained the therapist should engage in reflective listening, develop a growing discrepancy, avoid arguing with clients, roll with resistance and support self-advocacy. Miller believed that this approach was far more effective than traditional methods, where the therapist pushed for change. In contrast, Miller explained that motivational interviewing focused on empowerment and helping clients to become motivationally driven to change. These two lines written by Ralph Waldo Emerson exemplify the whole movement of transcendentalist writers and what they believed in. Though to the writers, transcendentalism was a fight for a belief, unknown to them they could have been fighting for the betterment of human health. Through modern science, scientists have linked increases in health among individuals through the use of transcendental meditation.
Transcendentalism is where people feel empowered and their surroundings surpass their five senses. Where intuition and imagination overpower logic and reason. There are five tenets that go along with transcendentalism: non conformity, self-reliance, free thought, confidence, and importance of nature. Non conformity is failure or refusal to conform to a prevailing rule or practice. Self-reliance is reliance on one's own powers and resources rather than those of others. Free thought is anything you think and express unaffected by other people's views. Confidence is the state of feeling certain about the truth of something. Motivational interviewing is based on a client centered approach to therapy that uses open-ended questions, affirmation, reflective listening and summaries to help the client recognize the pros and cons of change and their reasons for resisting change thereby eliminating their ambivalence about change. Once the client deals with their ambivalence the Miller and Rollick believe that the client will be able to make the necessary changes. In addition, motivational interviewing gets the client to argue for change not the counselor. Furthermore, the client not the counselor is responsible for their progress.

Motivational interviewing is an important technique and counseling style that was created by William Miller and Stephen Rollnick in the 1980’s. The brief definition of motivational interviewing (MI) that is provided by Miller and Rollnick in their influential text is “a collaborative conversation style for strengthening a person’s own motivation and commitment to change” (Miller & Rollnick, 2013). Motivational interviewing is considered to be a style that evolved from client-centered therapy. The style is considered to be empathic but requires the counselor to consciously directive so that they may help their client resolve the ambivalence they are experiencing and direct them towards change. The important thing to note is that client autonomy is key to the process (Hettema, Steele, & Miller, 2005). However, despite being able to currently give a definition of MI, one that could be considered a working definition, motivational interviewing is “a living, evolving method” (Miller & Rollnick, 2009). It will continue to evolve as times change and it is implemented in use with other maladaptive behaviors. MI is a relatively new style that it still has the ability to undergo changes to adapt to what purpose it is serving (Miller & Rollnick, 2009).
Transcendentalism was an important movement in philosophy and literature that flourished during the early to middle years of the nineteenth century. It was a belief that people could transcend, or rise above a physical or a material state. Transcendentalist considered transcendentalism as a philosophy or a way of life, not a religion. This philosophy contained such aspects as self-examination, and the celebration of individualism. Fulfillment was acquired when one communicates with nature to find union with the Over soul – A union between individual consciousness and a collective consciousness. Within this collective consciousness, the individual is the center. Transcendentalist also accepts the concepts of nature as a living mystery. They also believed all knowledge begins with self knowledge, meaning if a person does not know himself, he wouldn’t be able to extend that knowledge.
Individuals are always searching for treatment that will be beneficial to them. Clients want counseling to focus on them instead of focusing on their addictions. Motivational interviewing is not a theory but a method of counseling that focus on the individual while incorporated four principles to help individuals who are ready for change. These four principles are: express empathy, develop discrepancy, navigate resistance and encourage self-efficacy (Lundahl & Burke, 2009).
