A medical lab technician’s collect samples and perform tests to analyze body fluids, tissues, and other substances. Medical Lab Technician or MLT share many important milestones with the history of medicine itself. For instance, both fields can claim as their founder Aristotle, the father of biology and physiology. An MLT must have a two-year associate degree, and must obtain this education through a program accredited by the American Society for Clinical Laboratory Science. While most MLT’s earn up to $32,840 a year some can find higher wages in hospital or universities. After technician has attained training in the classroom, a medical laboratory technologist or senior technician will provide on the job training to them. In some cases, a healthcare or medical professional is the primary trainer. The training durations depends on the employer’s policies and a technician’s previous experience. There are certain certification’s that a MLT has to have for optimum success. Medical lab techs should become certified in their field after completing all of the educational and training requirements. The ASCP offers a national certification exam that should be renewed every three years. This certifies that the MLT is proficient in their field and allows he/she to use the initials MLT after your name (“Medical Laboratory Technologist Career”).
There are many safety hazards a medical lab tech faces every day. Some are life threating while others are minors. For instance, one of the most dangerous would be exposure to blood, body fluid, and tissues. It is the most dangerous because if the MLT has a rip in her gloves she touches the specimen she would be contaminating it and she would not get the proper result. Also the specimen may contain infectious agents which can cause very threating to the MLT health.
